Dramatic escalation

The NBA postponements marked a dramatic escalation in the league’s calls for racial justice, which have reverberated across the sport in the months since the killing of unarmed black man George Floyd by Minneapolis police in May.

Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James voiced solidarity with the decision in a tweet shortly after the Bucks boycott.

“WE DEMAND CHANGE. SICK OF IT,” James wrote.

The NBA’s players union also backed the protest. “The players have, once again, made it clear – they will not be silent on this issue,” National Basketball Players Association executive director Michele Roberts said in a statement.

At an emergency meeting of NBA teams in Florida late Wednesday, the crisis threatened to put the entire season in jeopardy, with LeBron James’ Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers both voting to abandon the season. All other teams voted to continue.

It was not immediately clear whether the Lakers and Clippers would continue the season as scheduled.

A walkout by two of the NBA’s strongest teams and title contenders – as well as its biggest star – would deal a devastating blow to the credibility of the season. The NBA’s Board of Governors is meeting on Thursday to address player concerns.

A renewed wave of anger had swept the NBA after Sunday’s shooting of Blake.

Black Lives Matter: NBA walkout sparks historic sport boycott in US; Osaka withdraws, tennis halted

In tennis, two-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka abruptly announced her withdrawal from the Western & Southern Open semi-finals, where she was due to play on Thursday.

“Before I am an athlete, I am a black woman. And as a black woman I feel as though there are much more important matters at hand that need immediate attention, rather than watching me play tennis,” Osaka posted in a statement on Twitter.

“I don’t expect anything drastic to happen with me not playing, but if I can get a conversation started in a majority white sport I consider that a step in the right direction.”....

She un-withdrew.

The ACLU is demanding that the Kenosha police chief and county sheriff resign.

Following the lead of organizers on the ground, today the American Civil Liberties Union of Wisconsin and National ACLU called for the immediate resignation of Kenosha Police Chief Daniel Miskinis and Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth. The ACLU’s demand follows the shooting of Jacob Blake and the murder of two protestors, who were shot by a 17-year-17-year-old participating in a counter-protest.

Sheriff David Beth's deputies not only fraternized with white supremacist counter-protesters on Tuesday, but allowed the shooter to leave as people yelled that he was the shooter. The sheriff excused this by saying his deputies may not have paid attention to the gunman because there were many distractions, including “screaming” and “hollering,” people running, police vehicles idling, “nonstop radio traffic,” and that “in situations that are high stress, you have such an incredible tunnel vision.” Sheriff Beth was also criticized last year after calling for five people of color who had been arrested for shoplifting to be put into warehouses “where we put these people who have been deemed to be no longer an asset.”

During the Kenosha Police Department’s first press conference in response to the Blake shooting and subsequent murders committed at protests, Police Chief Daniel Miskinis blamed the unidentified victims in Tuesday night’s shooting for their own deaths, saying the violence was the result of the “persons” involved violating curfew.

“The ACLU strongly condemns Sheriff Beth and Police Chief Miskinis’ response to both the attempted murder of Jacob Blake and the protests demanding justice for him. Their actions uphold and defend white supremacy, while demonizing people who were murdered for exercising their First Amendment rights and speaking out against police violence,” said Chris Ott, Executive Director of the ACLU of Wisconsin. “The only way to rectify these actions is for both Sheriff Beth and Police Chief Daniel Miskinis to immediately tender their resignations.”

If Sheriff Beth and Police Chief Miskinis refuse to immediately tender their resignation, the ACLU is calling for Kenosha Mayor John Antaramian to demand the police chief’s removal by the Kenosha Police and Fire Commission, and the sheriff’s removal by Gov. Tony Evers.

Here's what the sheriff of Kenosha said two years ago following the arrest of five Blacks -four men and one woman for shoplifting. If his comments aren't the very definition of racism, I don't know what is.

“I have no issue with these five people completely disappearing. At (this) point, these people are no longer an asset to our community, and they just need to disappear.”

AMY GOODMAN: Meanwhile, a damning video of Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth making racist comments has surfaced from a 2018 news conference. Beth described five people of color accused of shoplifting and crashing a stolen car as “garbage people that fill our communities, that are a cancer to our society.”

COUNTY SHERIFF DAVID BETH: Let’s put them in jail. Let’s stop them from truly, at least some of these males, going out and getting ten other women pregnant and having small children. Let’s put them away. At some point, we have to stop being politically correct. And I don’t care what race, I don’t care how old they are. If there’s a threshold that they cross, these people have to be warehoused. No recreational time. In this country, in this community, in this state, we have to get to the point that we no longer will put up with the garbage people that fill our communities, that are a cancer to our society.

The Mets and Marlins took the field, had a 42-second moment of silence, and then walked off.

The only thing left on the field: a Black Lives Matter shirt.

Colin Kaepernick Pens Letter Thanking LeBron James Following NBA Walkouts

LeBron James hasn't hesitated to speak up following the police shooting of unarmed Wisconsin man Jacob Blake, even leading walkouts in the NBA bubble and boycotting games. Colin Kaepernick, who famously protested police brutality by kneeling during the National Anthem, has voiced his support for LeBron in a new letter.

"Four years ago on August 14, 2016, I began protesting against systemic racism and social injustice," Kaepernick wrote in a letter he personally sent to LeBron. The Lakers star shared the letter on his Instagram story, adding that he will be "standing/kneeling right next to you brother!" The letter continued, "Truth is what I sought. Solidarity is what you showed me. Love is what moves us forward. Thank you for staying true."

Colin Kaepernick sent a note to LeBron James thanking him for protesting.

Ajamu Baraka: Will This Be the Radicalization of Black Lives Matter?

https://www.blackagendareport.com/will-be-radicalization-black-lives-matter

"On Monday a group of local Black Lives Matter chapters issued a statement to the public calling for more transparency and accountability from the Black Lives Matter Global Network, (BLMGN), the umbrella structure of the Black lives matter structures...

The lack of accountability and questions regarding the use of funds were almost inevitable because it was designed that way. Counterinsurgency efforts in the US and elsewhere discovered that those methods are effective and adopted them as part of the playbook for corrupting and redirecting potential oppositional groups...

Most of the activists who hit the streets just wanted to do the work and didn't know that questions about whether this movement was more valuable as an instrument of the ideological re-legitimization of the system than it was as an instrument for advancing the oppositional, anti-capitalist radical Black movement, especially as it seemed to align itself with right-wing neoliberal Democrats from Obama, Clinton, Warren and now to Biden.

So, with the field being flooded with cash from the enemy to keep the focus on easily incorporated themes of 'racial justice' and 'criminal justice reform', issues of both financial and political accountability were always beneath the surface. Now those issues have found the light of day and accountability is being called for...It is clear to me that the chapters raising questions about issues from the frontlines are doing so not out of a desire to destroy but to strengthen the movement by generating this discussion.

Will it be  a tough conversation? Yes. Because partially obscured by the liberal appropriation of intersectionality is the issue of class that the largely petit-bourgeois class-based leadership of the movement will not even acknowledge, let alone struggle with. But that may soon change.
