Assange Defence: Journalism Under Attack - Day 3/Sept 9/2020

https://assangedefense.org/live-blog-entry/day-3-september-9-2020-assang...

Prof. Paul Rogers on Trump's Politically Motivated Prosecution:

"The political objective of seeking to achieve greater transparency in the workings of government is clearly both the motivation and the modus operandi for the work of Mr Assange and the organization WikiLeaks. It's manifestation, as is set out in the study by Professor Benkler, has constituted a wholesale alteration of accessing and making available for public information, the secrets that governments wish to remain remain unknown to their general populations*. The subject matter of the charges Mr Assange currently faces involve strong examples of the clash of these positions both in their content and scope and in the reaction of government..."

*Here's just one of their government's secrets WL gave to Canuckleheads:

Canada Offered To Aid Iraq Invasion: WikiLeaks

https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/weston-canada-offered-to-aid-iraq-invas...

"The same day Canada publicly refused to join the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq, a high-ranking Canadian official was secretly promising the Americans clandestine military support for the fiercely controversial operation...Even as Chretien told the Commons that Canada wouldn't participate in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Canadian diplomats were secretly telling their US counterparts something entirely different. The classifed US document obtained from WikiLeaks shows senior Canadian officials met that same day with high-ranking American and British diplomats at Foreign Affairs headquarters in Ottawa.

The confidential note, written by a US diplomat at the gathering states that Foreign Affairs official James Wright waited until after the official meeting to impart the most important news of all. According to the US account, Wright 'emphasized' that contrary to official statements by the prime minister, Canadian naval and air forces could be 'discreetly' put to use during the impending US-led assault on Iraq. 'This message tracks with others we have heard,' the US diplomat wrote in his briefing note to State Department bosses in Washington. 'While for domestic political reasons...the GOC has decided not to join in a US coalition of the willing...they are also prepared to be as helpful as possible..."

Even here CBC dissembles to blunt the full force of the revelation as Richard Sanders explains:

WikiLeaks: Canada In Iraq War

http://coat.ncf.ca/mideast/WikiLeaksIraq.htm

"Canada's covert role in yet another US-led war in the Middle East and the media falsehoods used to revive the deception that Canada refused to join the Iraq War."

'Even in ostensibly confirming an example of Canadian duplicity in Iraq, the media subtly reinforced the dominant mythology that this country did little or nothing to to help the Iraq War. And so the widespread myth of Canada's supposed noninvolvement in Iraq continues to live on. As Mark Twain said 'How easy it is to make people believe in a lie  and how hard it is to undo that work again!'

Especially with Canuckleheads who clearly prefer to live in lies and 'necessary illusions'. Many thanks  Julian Assange/WikiLeaks!

Mobo2000

Yes, many thanks to Assange and WikiLeaks.   I remember the "collatoral murder" video vividly.   Those of us with the privilege of living without war need to see what our governments and their allies are doing to the rest of the world.  I'm glad I saw that video, it was horrifying but I think it did help me lose some "necessary illusions".

https://www.counterpunch.org/2020/09/07/the-stalinist-trial-of-julian-as...

"If the powerful lie to us, we have the right to know. If they say one thing in private and the opposite in public, we have the right to know. If they conspire against us, as Bush and Blair did over Iraq, then pretend to be democrats, we have the right to know. It is this morality of purpose that so threatens the collusion of powers that want to plunge much of the world into war and wants to bury Julian alive in Trumps fascist America.

In 2008, a top secret US State Department report described in detail how the United States would combat this new moral threat. A secretly-directed personal smear campaign against Julian Assange would lead to “exposure [and] criminal prosecution”.

The aim was to silence and criminalise WikiLeaks and its founder. Page after page revealed a coming war on a single human being and on the very principle of freedom of speech and freedom of thought, and democracy. The imperial shock troops would be those who called themselves journalists: the big hitters of the so-called mainstream, especially the “liberals” who mark and patrol the perimeters of dissent."

NDPP

Thanks for your thoughts and standing up for what is right Mobo2000. I see Canadian Dimension has  republished John Pilger's rousing and inspiring call also. Let us hope we will see other supposedly 'progressive', Canadian 'alternative', 'truth-tellers' who say they believe in whistleblowers and independent journalism break their obscene silence  in concert with the ill-intentioned misleaders of our msm who clearly do not. Where is Rick Salutin? Where is Linda McQuaig? Where is Karl on Parl?

How Canada's Corporate Media Smeared WikiLeaks Publisher and Journalist Julian Assange

https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2020/01/30/caas-j30.html

" Since WikiLeaks began a decade ago to publish secret US cables exposing many of the warcrimes and imperialist intrigues perpetrated by Washington and its allies around the world, Canada's corporate-controlled media outlets have made the whistleblowing website and its founder Julian Assange, the target of a smear campaign. Newspapers ranging from the 'liberal' Toronto Start and the Globe and Mail, the Canadian elite's  supposed 'newspaper of record,' to the neoconservative National Post - have villified Assange.

The cynicism of such criticisms is hard to overstate. Journalists who have spent large parts of their careers propagandizing for Canadian imperialist participation in the US-led wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya, which collectively led to the death of millions, and Canada's involvement in NATO's military encirclement of Russia, which has increased the likelihood of a catastrophic conflict fought with nuclear weapons, assert the right to pass moral judgement on Assange and WikiLeaks.

The determination on the part of Canada's media to denigrate and smear Assange reflects their unflinching support for the powers-that-be and visceral hatred of what he represents. The very idea that the population has a right to know about the criminal conspiracies and activities of the world's governments is anathema to these scribblers who make a profession of filtering official propaganda to justify the pro-corporate, pro-imperialist politics of Canada's ruling elites and its state..."

Jeremy Scahill: New Indictment of Assage is Part of a Broader War on Journalism and Whistleblowers (and vid)

https://www.democracynow.org/2019/5/24/jeremy_scahill_new_indictment_of_...

"We are at an extremely dangerous moment in the history of this country. Donald Trump is using the same rhetoric as that used by Nazi officials in the 1930s and 40s to attack the press. He's said he wants to jail journalists who publish stories he doesn't like, and he's wielding The Espionage Act like a chainsaw against journalistic sources. What makes it all so much worse is that it was the constitutional law scholar and Trump predecessor Barack Obama who teed Trump up, who laid the groundwork, who blazed the trail. This is about criminalizing journalism. None of this is about espionage. It's an assault on the very idea of a democratic society. At these moments silence is complicity.

This is a precedent-setting moment, not just legally but morally. It doesn't matter what you think of any of these individual whistleblowers. But it does matter that we all recognize that this is an attack on our basic rights to information. It matters that people who blow the whistle on crimes and warcrimes be defended not abandoned or portrayed as criminals or traitors. All of us must ask ourselves where we stand. History will remember our answers..."

We know why the politicians are silent. Opposing Washington is not something Canadian politicians do easily. Perhaps suppressing whistleblowers that threaten their power and complicity is in their interest too. We expect no support from them. The only politician I know of  who has lately spoken out against the outlandish persecution-as-prosecution of Julian Assange is Green Party leadership contender Dimitri Lacaris. And he isn't elected yet. Good for him. We'll not bother with the others. If they haven't spoken out yet it's because they have no interest or  wish to. And if they were now pressed to pretend support, and perhaps  issue a little generic milquetoast tweet as is the habit of the NDP whenever a controversial subject arises and it fears the loss or anticipates the possible gain of votes, this 'support' would mean little.

But ask the silent journalists especially, the As it Happens, the Current, the Power & Politics, or others you read or watch who should be outraged by this prosecution, and extension of US 'universal jurisdiction' against their profession, why their silence as complicity. Perhaps presstitutes who serve power not question it have no fears. Ask the 'progressive' academics, human rights lawyers, civil liberties groups, human rights organizations what they're doing to support freedom of the press in this instance, and if nothing on this matter, why they don't put their mouths where their money is instead at such a critical juncture. I'd be very interested in knowing what they reply.

Caitlin Johnstone: Assange Trial Focuses False Partisan Narratives...

"...The Intercept's Glenn Greenwald explained in 2018 that the Obama administration was unable to find an avenue to prosecute Assange for the leaks which began dropping in 2010 without endangering press freedoms, yet the Trump administration worked in concert with London and Quito to drag Assange out of the embassy and slam him with an extradition request (the sole reason for his continued imprisonment) based on the exact same evidence the Obama administration had access to on those exact same leaks.

Greenwald explained in the Washington Post that the Assange indictment was 'a blueprint for making journalists into felons,' writing that 'the Trump administration is aggressively and explicitly seeking to obliterate the last reliable buffer protecting journalism in the US from being criminalized, a step that no previous administration, no matter how hostile to journalistic freedom, was willing to take.'

Indeed, it always blows Assange-hating Democrats' minds [and their slavish Canucklhead imitators] when you point out to them that when they defend this extradition campaign they are in fact defending a Trump administration agenda. Not because it isn't true, nor even because the proof that it's true isn't publicly available information, but because there's been a massive smear campaign directed at liberal echo chambers to manufacture consent for Assange's silencing and persecution which has been geared toward painting Assange as a Trump supporter..."

Court Hears About History of Political Prosecution Under Espionage Act

https://shadowproof.com/2020/09/17/assange-extradition-trial-us-espionag...

"There has never, in the century-long history of the Espionage Act, been an indictment of a US publisher under the law for the publication of secrets,' declared Carey Shenkman, an attorney who has co-authored a first-of-its-kind, peer reviewed book on the Espionage Act.

Shenkman testified during WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange's extradition trial and added, 'There has never been an extraterritorial indictment of a non [US] publisher under the Act.' Assange is accused of 17 counts of violating the Espionage Act and one count of conspiring to commit computer crime that, as alleged in the indictment, is written like an Espionage offense. Shenkman told Judge Vanessa Baraitser, the Espionage Act was a product of 'one of the most repressive periods in the history of the United States..."

"...That latest act of legal theatre began with Julian's rearrest down in the cells of the Old Bailey, before seeing his lawyers for the first time in six months. Despite all deadlines for documents having long passed, despite the extradition hearing being underway since February (with May hearings postponed to September due to COVID-19), and after the defence had submitted all of their arguments and swathes of evidence, the United States issued yet another indictment, for which Julian needed to be arrested again. The first indictment was unsealed by the United States, as Julian said would happen, on the day Ecuador ejected him from its embassy, on 11 April, 2019..."

CN Live Updates: Assange Hearing Day Nine - 9/18/2020

https://consortiumnews.com/2020/09/18/live-updates-assange-hearing-day-n...

"Jennifer Robinson, a member of Assange's legal team, had a statement read out in court on her behalf in which she recounted a visit by then US Congressman Dana Rohrbacher to Julian Assange at the Ecuadorian embassy in London on Aug 15, 2017 where Robinson was present.

Robinson said in her statement that Rohrbacher claimed to be representing President Donald Trump on a mission in which the president would look favorably on preventing an indictment of Assange in return for the WikiLeaks publisher naming his source for the Democratic National Committee emails. The leaks before the 2016 US presidential election had led to a firestorm of allegations that Russia had provided those documents and that Trump was somehow in league with Russia and WikiLeaks to hurt his Democratic Challenger, Hilary Clinton.

Rohrabacher told Assange, according to Robinson's statement, that Assange could help Trump politically as well as to end the dangerous escalation of Cold War-like tensions between Russia and the United States if he could provide evidence of who the actual leaker of the Democratic emails was.

'Rohrbacher proposed a 'win-win' situation, Mr Assange can 'get on with his life' - a pardon in exchange for information about the source,' Robinson's statement said. 'Information from Mr Assange about the source of the DNC leaker would be of value to Mr Trump,' Assange refused, Robinson's statement said.

James Lewis QC for the prosecution rose after the statement was read to say the US government contested the truth of Robinson's statement..."

I was handcuffed and blindfolded and at Skopje Airport, handed to a CIA rendition team who physically overwhelmed me, cutting off all my clothes except my blindfold. I make this statement in these proceedings because the WikiLeaks publications were relied upon by the European Court in obtaining the redress I have received..."

Pepe Escobar on the Assange Trial: The Mask of Empire Has Fallen (and vid)

https://www.zerohedge.com/geopolitical/pepe-escobar-assange-trial-mask-e...

"...Here, Murray reports the exact moment when the mask of Empire fell, not with a bang but a whimper. 'The gloves were off on Tuesday, as the US Government explicitly argued that all journalists are liable to prosecution, under the Espionage Act (1917) for publishing classified information.' "All journalists" means every legitimate journalist, from every nationality, operating in any jurisdiction.

The point is not that self-described Paladins of 'great liberal media' are stupid. They are not covering the charade in Old Bailey because they are cowards. They must keep their fabled 'access' to the bowels of Empire. Unless people around the world are reading Murray's reports - and very few others - they will ignore enormously important aspects plus the overall appalling context of what's really happening in the heart of London. The main fact, as far as journalism is concerned, is that western corporate media is completely ignoring it..."

Perhaps, but it is quite possible to be a person who has uncovered very important documentation the ruling class has done everything to hide, and also be a far from nice human being, and in particular a misogynist rotter. There are countless examples; that is part of patriarchy. Once again, I don't want him to be extradited or persecuted for his useful acts, and I'm very annoyed at such an insinuation. And the ruling class scum accusing him have probably done far worse.

Extradition would be unlawful owing to the failure to ensure the protection of Mr Assange's fundamental trial rights in the US. Mr Assange faces a show trial at the infamous 'Espionage court' of the Eastern District of Virginia, before which no national security defendant has ever succeeded. Here, he faces secret proceedings before a jury picked from a population in which most of the individuals eligible for jury selection work for, or are connected to, the CIA, NSA, DOD or DOS..."
