Trump Says “Herd Mentality” Will Make COVID-19 “Go Away”

The United States reported over 1,400 coronavirus deaths on Tuesday — the highest daily total in over a month. The U.S. death toll is nearing 196,000. During a town hall event hosted by ABC on Tuesday, President Trump repeated his claim that the coronavirus would “go away.”

President Donald Trump: “We’re going to be OK. And it is going away. And it’s probably going to go away now a lot faster because of the vaccine. It would go away without the vaccine, George. But it’s going to go away a lot faster with the vaccine.”

George Stephanopoulos: “It will go away without the vaccine?”

President Donald Trump: “Sure, over a period of time. Sure, with time, it goes away.”

George Stephanopoulos: “And many deaths.”

President Donald Trump: “And you’ll develop — you’ll develop herd — like a herd mentality. It’s going to be — It’s going to be herd-developed.”

President Trump appeared to be referencing herd immunity. Epidemiologists don’t know how many millions more people would need to be infected for the United States to reach herd immunity — or even if herd immunity is possible for the novel coronavirus. By one count, adopting a herd immunity approach could lead to the deaths of over 2 million people in the U.S.

What percent of people being tested for covid are testing positive? The World Health Organization has flagged anything being over 5% as being unsafe. Here in Manitoba, even in the worst spikes, we never had more than 3% of the tests come back positive.

US Billionaire Critic of COVID-19 Restrictions Says Ottawa Let Her Skip 14-Day Quarantine

"A top Donald Trump donor who has publicly campaigned against COVID-19 restrictions was granted a special entry exemption into Canada last month, allowing her to skip the country's mandatory 14-day quarantine for foreign travellers, a CBC News investigation has learned.

Through a spokesperson, Liz Uihlein insisted that the three Americans were granted formal exemptions from the two-week self-isolation period that has been in place since last March. Oxfam: Wealthy Nations Bought Up More Than Half of World’s Coronavirus Vaccine Contenders

Globally, confirmed coronavirus cases are rapidly approaching 30 million, with over 940,000 recorded deaths from COVID-19. India recorded nearly 98,000 positive cases over the last 24 hours, the highest one-day toll for any country since the start of the pandemic.

Meanwhile, Oxfam reports a small group of wealthy nations — representing just 13% of the world’s population — has secured contracts for more than half of the world’s future supply of coronavirus vaccine. Oxfam warns this could leave two-thirds of the world’s population without access to a vaccine until at least 2022.

66 per cent of Ottawa's COVID-19 cases are from racialized communities

The Somerset West Community Health Centre says a community strategy to address the high risks faced by racialized communities in Ottawa during the COVID-19 pandemic must go beyond priority testing.

During a technical briefing with City of Ottawa officials, SWCHC Executive Director Naini Cloutier said that early reports show 66 per cent of the COVID-19 cases in Ottawa are from racialized communities.

In Toronto, 83 per cent of COVID-19 cases are from racialized communities.

Cloutier said the Somerset West Community Health Centre is proposing a "more holistic approach" to address the COVID-19 risks for racialized communities.

"We are saying the intervention needs to happen more than testing. There needs to be more protection in place. There needs to be an approach where the social determinates of health, employment, transportation, access to food, access to social distancing, housing, are all important."

There are three components to the strategy.

  1. A care pathway for primary care providers that includes assessing for social determinants of health and social support risk flags: such as food, transportation, employment;
  2. Wrap-around community support resources that include tailored messages that speaks to community experiences;
  3. A strategic community priority testing team to respond to people and communities to respond to people and communities that are disproportionally impacted by

While we are nervously watching the numbers here in Canada with schools re-opening, let's remember that Iran, one of the first global covid hotspots, has never had a cooling off period at all. White House Scuttled Plan to Mail 650 Million Face Masks to U.S. Households

The White House scuttled a plan to distribute 650 million cloth face masks to every residence in the United States during the early weeks of the coronavirus pandemic — that’s according to The Washington Post, which reports Vice President Pence and other officials rejected the proposal because “receiving masks might create concern or panic.” A draft press release about the plan from the U.S. Postal Service reads, “The first shipments are expected to reach U.S. households as early as April xx” — with the date left incomplete. One study by the Center for Economic Policy Research found widespread mask use across the United States would have saved 40,000 lives in the months of April and May alone.

CDC Watered Down Coronavirus Testing Guidelines Over Objections of Scientists

The New York Times reports a recommendation by the CDC to radically scale back coronavirus testing was not written by scientists and was published over their strenuous objections. Last month, the CDC’s website quietly changed its guidance to recommend that people without symptoms should not be tested — even if they’ve been in close contact with an infected person. The new CDC guidelines contain basic scientific errors, suggesting they were drafted by a political operative rather than an expert in infectious diseases. One unnamed federal official told The New York Times, “That was a doc that came from the top down, from [Health and Human Services] and the [White House] task force.”

Trump Coronavirus Adviser Threatens to Sue Stanford Doctors over Criticism

President Trump’s personal lawyer Marc Kasowitz has threatened to sue scores of Stanford professors and researchers after they published an open letter denouncing the qualifications of Scott Atlas, a colleague at Stanford who is now advising Trump on the pandemic. Atlas is a neuroradiologist with no expertise in infectious diseases. The Washington Post recently reported Atlas is pushing Trump to promote a controversial herd immunity strategy which could result in the deaths of millions of more Americans.

In an open letter, the Stanford doctors wrote of Dr. Atlas, “The guidance he is giving to the White House does not reflect sound epidemiological reasoning, nor is it consistent with the current body of scientific knowledge about COVID-19.”

Attorney Marc Kasowitz, who is now representing Atlas, has threatened to sue signatories of the open letter and has demanded a retraction, saying the letter “maliciously defames” his client.

Stanford professor Michael Fischbach responded to the threat by writing on Twitter, “I stand by everything we said. More facts, more science. Less Kasowitz.

This happened in every country except Sweden, and in all countries the number of deaths is dramatically lower than it was in the spring. European countries have advanced health care systems that can handle this, much more so than many other parts of the world. Why is the WHO sounding the alarm about Europe when other countries have worse problems, or you have places like Iran that never entered a true downswing in the number of cases?

Aristotleded24 wrote:

Deaths are dramatically lower because people are still taking extrodinary precautions not to catch it. Sweden did not and isn't doing what you are proposing.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/sep/15/sweden-records-its-fewest-...

Unlike many countries, Sweden closed schools for the over-16s but kept those for younger pupils open, insisting on full attendance. Schools and universities are now open again.

It also banned gatherings of more than 50 people and told people over 70 and in at-risk groups to self-isolate.

Otherwise, the population of 10 million was asked, rather than ordered, to respect physical distancing and work from home if possible, which it largely did. Shops, bars, restaurants and gyms stayed open and the wearing of masks has not so far been recommended.

They still banned gatherings over 50. People are voluntarily working from home. Schools were closed for over 16s.

Sweden has a population of 10 million ~40% of which live alone. Only ~15% of Canadians live alone.

Conditions vary around the world and we are still learning about the behavior of Covid 19. It does not seem as though there is anywhere in the world in which no one is taking precautions be they required or voluntary.

One reason is that they have to rely on data collected from the countries themselves. That is, WHO doesn't do the testing. The other reason is that all international organizations are Western world centric.

I just checked statistics for the Government of Ontario and the percentage of tests that came back positive for today is less than 2%. The World Health Organization has flagged anything above 5% as being dangerous for reopening.

Serious question for you: what measures would you like to see and how long would you like to see those measures enacted to deal with the coronavirus pandemic?

NDPP

Testing continues to be grossly inadequate and hence does not accurately depict reality. We are still largely 'flying blind.' Measures necessary are well known and repeatedly stressed. Social distancing, mask wearing and hand hygiene. There is a global pandemic underway. It is real, it is infectious and it kills. That is also the overwhelming international consensus of scientists and public health professionals and I recommend we defer to them not you. That is all.

I agree. Testing and tracing are not up to speed yet nor am I convinced the suppy of medical personnel or PPEs is sufficient. Medical workers already burnt out in Wave 1. We don't have an endless supply of doctors and particularly nurses.

U.N. Says 150 Million More Children May Face Poverty as Global Coronavirus Death Toll Nears 1 Million

Global coronavirus cases have topped 31 million, and the reported death toll is approaching 1 million. UNICEF says the pandemic may have led to 150 million more children living in poverty, a 15% increase in the overall number, which is now nearly 1.2 billion children who lack sufficient access to education, housing, nutrition, healthcare, sanitation or water.

India remains second in overall COVID-19 cases, behind the U.S., with over 5.4 million infections. Brazil has the second-highest death toll after the U.S. at nearly 137,000.

Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei has tested positive for the coronavirus, becoming the fourth Latin American head of state to contract the infection.

In Europe, Madrid reimposed a partial lockdown as cases there continue to surge. Cases in Belgium surpassed 100,000 following a recent spike.

Meanwhile, the British health minister says the U.K. is at a tipping point and that a second national lockdown is possible if people do not respect containment measures. Under tough new penalties, people who refuse to self-isolate after testing positive for COVID-19 or coming into contact with an infected person can be fined up to $13,000.

That's what happens when you try to suppress a virus that doesn't want to be suppressed. It doesn't matter how long you lock down or curtail human activity, virus cases will rise once restrictions are lifted. Eventually, we are going to see that treating the fight against covid as a war we could win was foolish. It's not going away, we need to learn to manage it to protect human health. It's not going away, we need to learn to manage it to protect human health.

..i agree with this statement. but it is not the issue. the core issue, in my estimation, is it is being done within a political and economic system that is geared to feeding the rich and powerful. to live with it within that system is a humongous task with no easy solutions. more so when it means including equality, justice and no sacrifice zones. none that is on the horizon that i can see. so this will take a while because none of that was happening before covid.

Pondering

The same way we need to manage diseases like tuberculosis, cholera, diptheria, or any other number of diseases which ravaged the developing world before this  year that we here in Canada weren't paying attention to.

We have a vaccine for cholera which is recommended for travel but we don't normally take it in Canada because it isn't common here nor highly contagious. You can get it from an infected persons feces but that is uncommon in developed countries.

The diphtheria vaccine is usually given as part of a combined vaccine with other diseases. This is routine for all Canadian children.

Tuberculosis can be cured by taking antibiotics.

Canada was terribly ill-prepared.

  • We are scrambling to get enough PPEs and beginning to produce them in Canada to lessen our dependence on other countries to provide them, but we are not there yet.
  • We are training staff in the thousands to work in homes for the elderly and in hospitals but we are still short staffed and nurses can't be trained up that easily.
  • We are still short on testing kits and access is uneven across the country. BC is using an easy home saliva test but for some reason it isn't approved and distributed across Canada. As things stand testing is still problematic in many places across Canada. That hampers contact tracing.
  • We are trying to get buy in on an app that would greatly simplify contact tracing and make it much faster but public buy in doesn't seem to be there yet.
  • We are opening in stages and regions to test how fast it will spread. If it doesn't spread then we can continue opening everything up. If it spreads we are trying to do more limited lockdowns so many regions won't be impacted.

The speed with which we can open up is highly dependent on public behavior. If we are mindful, if we wear masks and socially distance, if we avoid breathing the air of other people as much as possible then we will be able to open up that much faster. Until there is a vaccine or effective treatment it is all on us.

So, when you argue against compulsory mask wearing or promote groups of unlimited size, you are arguing against the very behaviors that will help us to open up again.

You ask if not now then when? I've been hearing not estimates but best case scenarios. Best case scenario major events will be able to resume by the end of 2021 but it is more likely we will have to wait until 2022 to get back to major international events. Once the vaccine exists and is fully approved it will still take time to manufacture and distribute. Again, We only have so many medical professionals. Worse case scenario a vaccine takes much longer so we are stuck with finding treatments. In that case we will hear more and more sad stories of young people either dying unexpectedly or being permanently disabled. It won't be as bad as polio but it won't be good.

From what I hear it is a good candidate for a vaccine so I think it is likely that by 2022 at the latest we will be back to holding major events. We have a bigger problem.

Scientists predicted this pandemic and predict that they will happen more often.

https://www.gavi.org/vaccineswork/5-reasons-why-pandemics-like-covid-19-...

Increased global travel, urbanization, climate change, increased human-animal contact, health worker shortages because they all move to higher income countries.

Sneering at science won't change the facts for libertarians or Trumpers.

..i agree with this statement. but it is not the issue. the core issue, in my estimation, is it is being done within a political and economic system that is geared to feeding the rich and powerful. to live with it within that system is a humongous task with no easy solutions. more so when it means including equality, justice and no sacrifice zones. none that is on the horizon that i can see. so this will take a while because none of that was happening before covid.

The Conservative Party confirmed late Sept. 18 that O’Toole had received a positive test for the virus. The Tory leader had said earlier this week that he, his family and some of his staff would get tested, after a staff member had tested positive.

O’Toole’s wife and children tested negative, the party’s statement also indicated, and O’Toole remains in isolation and is “feeling well.”.....
