Trump and Biden to Face Off in 1st Debate as NYT Drops Second Report on Trump’s Taxes

President Trump and Joe Biden are facing off tonight in Cleveland for the first of three presidential debates. Trump is expected to face questions about the bombshell report in The New York Times that revealed he paid no federal income tax in 10 of the past 15 years and just $750 in 2016 and 2017. In a follow-up report, the Times reveals Trump made $427 million in connection to the hit reality TV show “The Apprentice,” providing him a financial lifeline as other investments lost money. The Times reports, “Mr. Trump’s genius, it turned out, wasn’t running a company. It was making himself famous — Trump-scale famous — and monetizing that fame.”

Trump Admin Says Census Collection Will End Next Week, Defying Court Ruling

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said Monday census counting will end next week on October 5, in defiance of a federal judge’s ruling last week which said census operations should carry on, as previously planned, through the end of October. The Trump administration last month moved forward the deadline by one month, to September 30. On Monday, the California judge overseeing the case said she was “disturbed” by Ross’s announcement and ordered the government to respond by today with its justification for shortening the census count.

MT Court Hands Victory to Native American Voters; PA Warns 100,000 Ballots Could Be Rejected

In a victory for Native American voting rights, a Montana court has abolished a state law that imposed severe restrictions on ballot collection in rural Indigenous communities. The law limited the number of ballots one person could collect and restricted who was allowed to collect ballots.

In Philadelphia, a top election official warned a loophole in a recent state Supreme Court ruling could cause as many as 100,000 mail-in ballots to be rejected statewide. The ruling concerns the issue of so-called naked ballots — ballots which could be rejected by poll workers if they are received without a second “secrecy” envelope. Trump won Pennsylvania by only 44,000 votes in 2016.

Meanwhile, in New York City, a large number of voters in Brooklyn said they received absentee ballots with the wrong name and address on the return envelope.

i watched the whole horrifying thing.

thanks for the democracy now link, i think.  just kidding, it was nice to watch not-youtube

yeah, a schoolyard bully who no-one will take on, because his dad owns the town's only diamond mine.

vs a dish rag.  despite stumbling off track several times (hard; and rescued by the host a couple times), biden plodded along.  but sooo uninspiring, no claiming the space, no vision, no attack, constantly outframed.

i thought the format of the questions was odd, like an interview with "trump", and "joe" was also asked to respond.  many of the questions going to both candidates involved specific things trump did or said.

watched the debate through the lense of:  yesterday? on cbc ideas, wilkerson, ex us military guy, lifelong republican, powel's head of staff; very worried trump and his supporters will not accept an election loss.  they own 90% of firearms.  worth a listen.

I agree. Biden won not through his performance but because of insanely over the top, racist, embittered, lying Trump turned off a significant number of people. A CNN poll of debater watchers backs this up 56% thought Biden would win before the debate, 60% thought he won after the debate, which is within the margin of error. For Trump 43% thought he would win before the debate but only 28% thought he won after the debate. The poll also found 32% were more likely to vote for Biden, 11% were more likely to vote for Trump and 57% said it made no difference in who they would vote for.

Best moment of the debate was when Biden told Trump to shut up.

Trump was rude, nasty and boorish.  Kind of like Joe McCarthy when he imploded.  And it's being reflected in the insta polling.

Why Trump resorted to torching the debate

quote:

Tuesday was different for three reasons.

First, Trump, the king of powerfully simplistic political branding, no longer seems to have a message. In 2016 he had his four pillars of immigration, trade, Obamacare and corruption. He had slogans that were effective: “Make America Great Again,” “Build the Wall.” Quick, what’s Trump’s message in 2020? Nothing really leaps out. There is no Trump legislative agenda on Capitol Hill. He was asked recently by The New York Times what he wanted to do in a second term and the paper noted he talked about cutting regulations and taxes, appointing conservatives judges and border control. But the paper also somewhat mischievously recorded this meandering non-response from the president that became a popular meme:

“But so I think, I think it would be, I think it would be very, very, I think we’d have a very, very solid, we would continue what we’re doing, we’d solidify what we’ve done, and we have other things on our plate that we want to get done.”

The Trump campaign put out a second-term agenda, a hodgepodge of big ambitions (“Create 10 Million New Jobs in 10 Months,” "Eradicate Covid-19") and conservative buzzwords (“Teach American Exceptionalism”), but the president has been erratic in discussing the agenda or its key plank.

In 2016, Trump had a clear and concise line of attack against Hillary Clinton: She was a corrupt member of the Washington establishment and he was going to send her to jail if he became president. He discussed the alleged perfidy of her deleting personal emails with impressive discipline. But Biden has proven to be a more elusive target. Sometimes he is "Sleepy Joe." Other times he's a dangerous radical. At this point in the campaign in 2016, Clinton had become a despised figure among Trump’s hardcore supporters. Those supporters in 2020 can’t seem to muster the same amount of antipathy for the former vice president.

Finally, and most important, Trump in 2020 is burdened with a record, one that has sunk him into chronic unpopularity for several years now, even during the height of his economic boom. Trump was not the first American politician to successfully win an election by casting himself as a populist outsider taking on the corrupt establishment. That playbook is as old as the republic.

But those outsiders who suddenly arrive in Washington or a state capital with no experience and ill-equipped for the job suddenly realize the limits of the campaign schtick. (This happened to former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura, the former professional wrestler who declined to run for a second term in 2002.)

When they could be heard through the fog of Trump’s insults and interruptions, the portions of the debate that were most devastating to Trump were Biden’s prosecution of the case against the president’s handling of the pandemic, the economy and health care, particularly the effects of gutting Obamacare.

Biden was by no means commanding on Tuesday. In the hands of a more nimble and energetic Democrat, these portions of the debate might have been more devastating for Trump. (Naturally people on the left thought so: “Bernie would have annihilated Trump,” wrote the New York progressive activist Jonathan Tasini.)

What it all adds up to — no message, no killer line of attack against Biden, no defense of his record — is that Trump resorted to strapping on an explosive vest. Perhaps the idea was to sully both Biden and the moderator, Chris Wallace, who was incapable of controlling the president’s interruptions. “Mr. President, please stop,” Wallace said at one point, seeming to speak for many viewers.

The Politics that Led to the 'Worst Debate'

"...The Party is me, right now. I am the Democratic Party,' Joe Biden shot back at the 'clown' Donald Trump, who repeatedly tried to associate the former vice president with the Green New Deal, Medicare for All, and Black Lives Matter demands to reign in the police - all issues supported by super-majorities of Democrats, and even large chunks of Republican votes, but opposed by the candidate now representing the Party.

'You just lost the left,' Trump twice hollered, wishfully. In an actual democracy the Democrats would, indeed, have committed political suicide by nominating a corporate hack and career race-baiter like Biden as their standard-bearer. But the US is a corporate dicktatorship where the rich have two parties and the rest of us effectively have none.

The trick will continue to work until voters, especially Blacks, stop rewarding Democrats for their serial betrayals. There is nothing smart or 'strategic' about falling for the same trick every election cycle - and anybody that tells you different is in on the con game. Black folks and progressives are not to blame for Donald Trump, but do bear responsibility for the Democrats that are not much different from Trump on every issue that counts except race - and in Biden's case, not even that."

Hate Groups Celebrate Trump’s Call for Far-Right Extremists to “Stand By”

Far-right groups are continuing to celebrate President Trump’s debate performance after he refused to disavow white supremacists and urged one violent hate group, the Proud Boys, to stand by.

President Donald Trump: “What do you want to call them? Give me a name. Give me a name.”

Chris Wallace: “White supremacists and right-wing” —

Joe Biden: “White supremacists.”

President Donald Trump: “Go ahead. Who would you like me to condemn?”

Joe Biden: “Proud Boys.”

Chris Wallace: “White supremacists and right-wing militia.”

Joe Biden: “The Proud Boys.”

President Donald Trump: “Proud Boys, stand back and stand by.”

The Proud Boys are now selling T-shirts with the president’s words: “stand back and stand by.” Andrew Anglin, the founder of the neo-Nazi website The Daily Stormer, wrote on Wednesday, “I got shivers. I still have shivers. He is telling the people to stand by. As in: Get ready for war.” On Wednesday, President Trump attempted to shift his message.

President Donald Trump: “I don’t know who the Proud Boys are. I mean, you’ll have to give me a definition, because I really don’t know who they are. I can only say they have to stand down, let law enforcement do their work.”

A moment later, Trump repeated his claim that it is anti-fascists who are the “real problem.”

Pondering

Trump lost the debate but Biden didn't win it. He would have lost against anyone else including Hilary Clinton if she turned Republican.

Biden's constant grinning was weird when the topics were so serious. Trump's behavior wasn't funny. Grinning while Trump was saying terrible things made Biden seem like he didn't take the topics seriously nor Trump. Would you laugh at the rise of Hitler?

I don't mean to sound insensitive but what a coincidence. He bombed at the debate. The nation was laughing at him. He had his tax returns disclosed to the public. He was plummeting in the polls. The entire world recently found out that his billionaire image was a facade and that he is broke.

I am supposed to believe that the White House secret service had someone in close contact with the President of the United States who wasn't properly screened during a deadly global pandemic.

He is now in isolation. People are worried and concerned for his health instead of laughing at him. This covid gives him time to regroup and develop an election strategy for the remainer of the campaign. This gives him a pass from having to debate again because he isn't capable of debating without embarrassing himself.

And if anything worse comes from this real or staged then he won't have to face the courts over his tax returns and anything else that they may have been building a case with against him.

If I were Trump, I would want to be very sick right now too.

Morning Joe is reporting that at least 21 senior aides and Trump family members, as well as some Republican Senators, had contact with Hope Hicks and/or Donald Trump and therefore should be in quarantine. I'm taking this to the extreme now but suppose this arguable trumped up covid morphs into something more extreme like a stroke or a heart attack or something that they tell us leaves him with a permanent brain injury as an example, then he can claim that he never lost the election. He doesn't have to face the public and he doesn't have to legally account for his actions. He would likely have money tucked away somewhere and could live where there are no extradition laws if he ever decided to permanently leave.

Texas Republican Governor Orders Closure of Absentee Ballot Drop-Off Sites

In Texas, Republican Governor Greg Abbott issued a proclamation Thursday limiting absentee ballot drop-off locations to just one per county, in the latest effort by Texas Republicans to make it harder for people to vote — especially in urban areas home to a greater proportion of Democrats. Abbott’s proclamation leaves 4.5 million residents of Harris County with just a single location to drop off their completed ballots. This is Myrna Pérez, director of the Brennan Center’s voting rights program.

Myrna Pérez: “We’re obviously concerned that any additional barrier to the ballot box are going to hurt those members of our community that have been traditionally disenfranchised: poor folks, people of color, students — folks who traditionally have had a harder time overcoming the kind of barriers that have been placed in front of them systematically.”

Pennsylvania “Election Integrity” Commission Would Give GOP Power to Disrupt Nov. 3 Election

In Pennsylvania, Republican lawmakers have advanced a state resolution that would create a so-called select committee on election integrity that Democrats warn could be used to disrupt the November 3 election by giving Republicans the power to subpoena elections officials — even before all the votes are counted. On Wednesday, Democratic state Representative Malcolm Kenyatta blasted Republican plans at a committee meeting in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta: “This, I guess we’re calling it, committee on election integrity has no integrity, has none. And what it would do — and you can laugh, Representative — but what it would do is allow people, allow the folks on this committee, that are actively up for reelection, to subpoena ballots, to subpoena elections officials, during an election of which they are participants. Nothing about that screams of integrity.”

Last week, The Atlantic magazine revealed Republican Party officials are looking at ways to subvert the election process to ensure Trump stays in power — including a plan to have Republican-led state legislatures claim the results of the election to be fraudulent, then choose a slate of Republican electors to vote in the Electoral College regardless of the outcome of the actual vote.

Trump, 74, Faces Greater COVID-19 Morbidity Risk Due to High Blood Pressure and Obesity

Trump’s positive coronavirus test result has raised concerns about the line of presidential succession. Vice President Mike Pence met with Trump at a White House Coronavirus Task Force briefing on Monday. On Friday morning Pence’s office said the Vice President tested negative for coronavirus, though some people take longer than four days to register a positive result after exposure to an infected person.

President Trump is 74, has elevated blood pressure and is over the threshold for obesity — three factors linked to higher morbidity and mortality among COVID-19 patients. Early in the pandemic, Trump repeatedly downplayed the severity of COVID-19, publicly claiming the virus would go away “like a miracle,” even as he privately told journalist Bob Woodward it was airborne and far deadlier than the flu.

President Donald Trump: “This thing is a killer if it gets you. If you’re the wrong person, you don’t have a chance.”

Bob Woodward: “Yes, yes, exactly.”

President Donald Trump: “So, this rips you apart.”

Bob Woodward: “This is a scourge. And” —

President Donald Trump: “It is the plague.”

Allan, I was skeptical at first too. I also think that he is a flight risk for the reasons that you mentioned. The fact that he is at Bethesda Maryland under formal medical supervision means that his positive test result is not likely any hoax even though the timing and circumstances make it really seem like it is more than just a coincidence.

I am going beyond covid at this point. I think that he is in an extremely high risk situation right now to suffer a massive heart attack or stroke from all the stress that he is under. He would be embarrassed and humiliated that his billionaire image was exposed as a fraud and that people know that he is financially broke. He knows that he has lost the election and his time is running out. He knows that he will face tax evasion charges when he leaves the White House and likely many other charges. He doesn't want to go to prison. Just imagine all the stress that he is under and at his age.

Trump is the kind of person that illness does not represent justice. He is the kind of person that you want him to be fully cognizant and healthy to witness Americans vote him out of office. You want him fit and healthy to face criminal charges for everything the DA's office wants to prosecute him for. You want him to be fit and healthy to spend many years behind bars to account for all the vile and wicked things that he is done.

Illness doesn't cut it when it comes to people like Trump.  But, he is in a high risk category when it comes to covid so it doesn't bode well for him. He is elderly, he is overweight, and he demographically falls into the lowest income tax bracket. We just have to wait and see how he manages. I can honestly say that I wish him well.

Trump court nominee Barrett tied to group advocating criminalization of homosexuality

A major national union, the American Federation of Teachers, is exposing Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Amy Coney Barrett, for her connections to a hate group espousing criminalization of homosexuality.

Barrett has apparently been paid for speeches she delivered to the right-wing hate group, the “Alliance Defending Freedom.”

In its statement, at www.aft.org/press, AFT President Randi Weingarten cites a 2017 financial disclosure report showing Barrett, while a law professor at Notre Dame, was paid $4,200 in two installments to speak to the organization.

The Washington Post reported Sept. 28 that Barrett spoke several times to the group, starting in 2014.

The Indianapolis Star reported on July 8, 2017, that “when she was a law professor, Barrett gave an hour presentation on constitutional law to a legal fellowship program’” the alliance sponsored for right-wing “Christian” law students.

“The Southern Poverty Law Center called the Alliance Defending Freedom an ‘anti-LGBT hate group’ that supports recriminalization of homosexuality, linked homosexuality to pedophilia, and worked on legislation that would allow gays and lesbians to be denied goods and services on the basis of religion,” AFT added.

But it’s Barrett’s overall record against workers’ rights, women’s rights, reproductive choice, and the Affordable Care Act that prompted AFL-CIO President Trumka, Weingarten, and other union and progressive leaders, from NARAL to the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, to oppose Trump’s nomination of her.

They are among the first organizations to launch active campaigns to stop the federal appellate judge from ascending to the U.S. Supreme Court, succeeding the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg.....
