Mobo, that is a very conscise and perfect distinction between the two authors. I think I might have been the one that confused the two since I loved both of their works.

I watched part 1 of "The Comey Rule" with Jeff Daniels and other notable cast members. I read mixed reviews but found I liked it more than I expected to. Will probably watch part 2 tonight.

..just completed raised by wolves. what a bizarre and disturbing end. looking forward to season 2.

..i came across this film when i was checking out tanya tagaq's twiter account. i followed her link and ended up on gem.

The Filmmakers: Angry Inuk

Hosts Johanna Schneller and Amanda Parris interview director Alethea Arnaquq-Baril and a panel of film experts about Angry Inuk.

..this is a very important film to watch. it clearly shows the misinformation spread by anti sealers have led to a destruction of inuit economy. which has led to suicides. the film depicts an awesome fightback against destructive forces including the eu.

To not forget to be joyous. Must be watched full screen.

I have only watched the first episode and hope to watch the second tonight, but "The Trickster" on CBC is fantastic.

TRICKSTER (6×60 Drama, Streel Films and Sienna Films) is based on the best-selling novel Son of a Trickster by Eden Robinson, with CBC confirming today that it has been renewed for a second season. Starring newcomer Joel Oulette, this unique series is created by award-winning filmmaker Michelle Latimer (RISE, Nuuca) and Tony Elliott (Orphan Black), and directed by Latimer. Oulette plays Jared, an Indigenous teen struggling to keep his dysfunctional family above water, holding down an after-school job and selling ecstasy to support his partying mom, Maggie (Crystle Lightning), who self-medicates an undiagnosed mental illness, and his unemployable dad, Phil (Craig Lauzon) and his new girlfriend. But when Jared starts seeing strange things — talking ravens, doppelgängers, skin monsters— his already chaotic life is turned upside down. Additional cast includes Kalani Queypo (Jamestown), Anna Lambe (The Grizzlies), Joel Thomas Hynes (Little Dog), Gail Maurice (Cardinal) and Georgina Lightning (Blackstone).

..watched trickster. i liked it.

..i came across this quite be accident. after watching the trailer i thought i would give it a try..i'm glad i did. there is a lot that i see in lex that i see in myself which may well be what attracted me in the 1st place.

Ms. White Light

Ms. White Light is the story of Lex Cordova, a young woman who counsels terminally ill clients that have trouble letting go. While proving uniquely talented in her ability to connect with the dying, Lex is at a total loss when it comes to dealing with everyone else. When Valerie, a sharp-tongued free spirit who simply has no time for her own mortality, refuses to play by Lex's rules, Lex is forced to question her own decisions, and must decide if the business of dying is truly worth it...even at the cost of living her life.

Well I am putting this on my list of things to look into and watch. Thanks epaulo.

Speaking of the theme of dying and letting go, Ricky Gervais' "After Life" is beautifully done. By the end of season 3, I was balling like a baby. Mind you, having the ending scene feature Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" was a brilliant stroke for pulling the heart strings.

epaulo13

..season 2 is complete. it came out in one dump on mar 17th. i didn't really warm up to it until the 4th epi. mother got her eyes back and everything changed.

Tribal fusion, best watched on TV or at least full screen.

..i had only watched this flim in bits and pieces before now. and the 1080p really helped me enjoy it. i was at first struck, of all things, by the cigarette smoking going on. but this quickly moved to the background as the band and company's music came forward.

Martin Scorsese’s The Last Waltz on the Criterion Collection

Martin Scorsese’s The Last Waltz approaches the concert movie as a bedrock for formal experimentation, one where every lighting choice and camera movement is carefully considered. As the Band rehearsed for their farewell show at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom on Thanksgiving Day, 1976, the filmmaker aggressively storyboarded ideas for each song that the group practiced, envisioning how to adjust the stage lighting to reflect mood and timing cuts and movement around each composition. Scorsese’s unorthodox approach is evident from the start, when the first song that we see the Band play in the film is the last performance of the evening, a short and giddy playthrough of “Don’t Do It.”....

Peaky Blinders

A gangster family epic set in 1900s England, centering on a gang who sew razor blades in the peaks of their caps, and their fierce boss Tommy Shelby.

..when i began watching pb i enjoyed the novelty of it. i enjoyed some of the characters like aunt polly played by helen mccrory and alfie solomons played tom hardy. some of the plots and dialogues were also of interest. as was the collusion with governments and secret service.

..but the repetitive violence, drinking, drugs and general abuse of people became really tiresome. i found myself skipping over the stupidity of it and moving over to the more meaty parts. season 5 introduced fascism.

..and now i began season 6. there is less drinking. tommy is in north america looking to sell opium. sell it to an ex gangster turned respectable, (really not), turned powerful ally to the president of the us. he is travelling to the uk on a pretext but is secretly on the president's mission of finding out if fascism is viable.

..while all this is a tv show i can't help but think about it in terms of what i have learned from history. not to mention the rise of the right today. i'm on the 2nd epi i look forward to see where it goes.

epaulo13

..so at the bottom of the video last waltz were other videos that were related to music. other martin scorsese films. one a chronicle of bob dylan's evolution between 1961 and 1966. a turbulent period where there was a love hate relationship played out at some of his concerts. at one concert pete seeger wanted to cut the electric cables while dylan and his band where on stage...with electric instruments. the music was to loud to hear dylan's lyrics complained seeger. and half the audience booed. calling dylan a traitor.

..this was all very interesting to me. i knew of some of it but the film puts things in a larger prespective than i was aware of.

..there was always a huge difference between what people expected of dylan vs who he really was. i'm glad he found his way past that period of time. it was also a time when the band started playing with him.

The Bob Dylan Documentary ‘No Direction Home’ Is The Best Martin Scorsese Film Of This Century

Pondering

Trickster was terrific. A real shame that it ended due to false indigenous representation by a producer or someone high up.

I liked the first season of Pinky Blinders but I think the second season will be too violent for me to enjoy. I wish they made a separate cut for people who aren't into blood and gore.  I have no patience for blood and gore or long sex scenes. A little is okay but I want the story to move along.

epaulo13

..while the peaky blinders were indeed vicious they were acceptable to the state who used them and others like them. for all their viciousness  the peaky blinders were not even close to that of state who severed the interest elites.

..the state was like the god of viciousness with their imperial wars and absolute abuse of it's own populations. this was a time of zero rights except what you fought for in the moment. unionist and lefties were hunted down and killed or rendered ineffective at the very minimum. lives of the poor, which were the majority was brutal.

..it was the politics of the show that interested me for the most part. and a lot of the time the writing was excellent. the power dynamics was an interest as well. how they work.

Pondering

I agree, good show, I just can't take the gore, even just hearing it. I got the feeling the second season was going to be worse than the first so I haven't watched it.

The casting was great.

laine lowe laine lowe's picture

I am trying to keep up to date with CBC "The Porter". I found the first 3 episodes very well done and exciting but the last two have dragged on a bit. Still, it's interesting to see the real historic touchstones of late 20s Montreal and the Black community that were closely tied to the railway for employment.

kropotkin1951

I liked Peaky Blinders, especially when it went from gang mayhem into spy mayhem. One of the best theme songs of all time.

..just started watching this because of it's write up. and who's involved. there a trailer with the link.

The Trial

An unassuming office worker is arrested and stands trial, but he is never made aware of his charges.

..a review

quote

Kafka's book is simply marvellous, though difficult to adapt to film. Orson Welles' 1962 film does so laudably, and should be applauded for trying, even if it didn't quite come off (though it did do so, brilliantly).

It is not as faithful as the 1993 version, which did follow the book closely while Welles' at times is more Welles than Kafka, but in terms of momentum, emotional power and atmosphere Welles' is significantly better. For the record, while to me the 1962 film was brilliant the 1993 one was a big let down and an example of being faithful not being a good thing. 'The Trial' may not be one of Welles' greatest, being not as important, innovative or influential as 'Citizen Kane' and 'A Touch of Evil', but it's still among Welles' better films and one of his more accessible in some ways.

As always with Welles, 'The Trial' is extremely well made. The cinematography is wonderfully nightmarish and sometimes with an eerie and surreal quality, and Welles' use of locations is spell-binding, some of the best use of locations seen by me from any film viewed this year. The music is suitably ominous, and Welles lives up to his reputation as one of the greatest and important directors there was.

The atmosphere created has a lot of power, a dark nightmarish labyrinth that is wonderfully weird, often audacious and sometimes surprisingly impish. 'The Trial' is grippingly and thoughtfully written, and the story is powerful and atmosphere, the tension never slipping.

Performances are top notch. Anthony Perkins is excellent, conveying his character's paranoia extremely convincingly. Jeanne Moreau and Romy Schneider are mysterious and exotic.

In conclusion, marvellous film and while a less faithful adaptation of Kafka's book it's vastly superior too.

..last season for the female doctor. they improved a lot on the writing for it compare to last season. i just ended the 6th epi of 9 and enjoying it a lot.

The Thirteenth Doctor’s final adventure

Have finally gotten around to watching Sean Baker's latest movie (Red Rocket), as well as some of his earlier films; was a big fan of The Florida Project and Tangerine but took far too long to get to anything else of his.

It's often the pattern of directors who make those kinds of movies - think of Ramin Bahrani or Chloe Zhao in recent times, or the Italian neorealists of the 1940s & 1950s - that they do it for a few years, then move on to more conventional stuff; glad to see Baker hasn't done that yet.

Troppo

Ex-cop Ted Conkaffey (Thomas Jane) is falsely accused of a disturbing crime. He escapes to the tropics of Far North Queensland and becomes entangled with a newly formed private investigation agency.

epaulo13

..season 2 came out a short while back with 8 new episodes. very upbeat and very inspiring.

Gentleman Jack

A dramatization of the life of LGBTQ+ trailblazer, voracious learner, and cryptic diarist Anne Lister.

Oh I am looking forward to watching season 2 of "Gentleman Jack". The first season was fabulous.

nicky

Try "Gaslit", a series about Watergate with Martha Mitchell as the central character.

Great performances from Julia Roberts and an unrecognizable Sean Penn as her AG husband, and from an unknown (to me) who chillingly plays Gordon Liddy.

Interesting, I had not heard about "Gaslit".

epaulo13

..i watched the 1st epi of gaslit earlier today. i didn't realize that was penn. great makeup!

Did you ever watch the sadly short-lived FX series "Terriers", which aired its only season in 2010? It was about a pair of low-rent PIs in San Diego and is (IMHO) one of the great many shows cancelled far too soon.

epaulo13

..i did at least twice. :) i really liked it and was sorry to see it cancelled after 1 season.

Terriers

Ex-cop and recovering alcoholic Hank Dolworth partners with his best friend, former criminal Britt Pollack, in an unlicensed private investigation business.

I loved "Terriers" and was so disapointed thst  it was cancelled. I am going thought season 2 of "Upload" - not part of my favourite genre (fantasy.sci-fi) but I am surprised by how much I am enjoying it. Kind of like "Resident Alien" which really took me by surprise.

..the show is so addictive. like a great novel that you just can't put down i burned trough 3 seasons.

..although the show doesn't really reflect my politics it address the issues in it's fashion and political dynamics that isn't repulsive like the vast majority of american and canadian political shows. plus it is instructive of the danish political system.

..i look forward to season 4.

Have been watching (or re-watching) a lot of Taylor Sheridan's work lately; finally got around to seeing Sicario: Day of the Soldado, and re-watched some of the other films penned by him (Hell or High Water is my pick for the best movie of the last decade). Haven't enjoyed Yellowstone quite as much as I have his movies, but it's still pretty good.

laine lowe laine lowe's picture

I am watching the Irish dramedy "The Dry" and it is very good. Kind of similar to "Fleabag" in terms of tone but still quite different, perhaps darker.

epaulo13

..i just started the dry as well. completed the 1st epi. and i like it too. :)

..also just watched the 1st epi of borgen season 4. which basically introduces what the season will probably be about.

..a short synopsys of the 1st epi goes like this:

- borgen is no longer the prime minister but head of state dept.

- oil is found in greenland which promises big bucks for denmark. the gov likes this but borgen wants to honour the paris agreement. the power struggle / manoeuvring begins.

..the canadian company doing the drilling has investors. one of them is a russian oligarch and a personal friend of putin. which violates the sanctions after russia invades the ukraine.

epaulo13

..i've had this series on my list for more than a year. it has 2 seasons and i understand there is a 3rd coming out this year. it's a russian show and i was attracted to it because of it's scifi classification. i've just completed the 2nd epi and i'm finding it worth watching. the acting is quite good. looking forward to the 3rd epi in fact. there's a trailer that comes with the link.

Better Than Us

A family on the brink of splitting up become the owners of a cutting-edge robot being sought by a corporation, homicide investigators and terrorists.

laine lowe laine lowe's picture

I am now into series 2 of the UK faux doc comedy "W1A" about working at the BBC and it's  pretty good (same team and overlapping characters as "Twenty Twelve" that was about preparing for the London Olympics). It takes the mickey out of bureaucrats, creatives and celebrities.

I am also half way through season 2 of the amazing "Hacks" with Jean Smart. About an on her way out (at the old age of 50 it would seem) brash and seemingly heartless stand-up comic.

epaulo13

..finally started watching this new series. it came out at the end of april. and it's dark. and it comes with a caution warning for it's violence against women. elizabeth moss is the lead character. the link comes with a trailer.

Yeah, best film on Dylan
and the Last Waltz is is my favorite rock music concert with great guest muscicans,
"Once Were Brothers" is a fine history of The Band and Robbie Robertson (from Robbie Robertson's perspective) and the history of them as back up band for Dylan, getting booed all over the world is elaborated on. Amusing and surprising for the unfamiliar,
