Why shouldn't the UK public be allowed to accept or reject Boris Johnson's deal with the EU as the UK voters never voted for Boris Johnson's deal with the EU?

Fair enough. So let Labour stop blocking a general election on it.

A general election will not determine  whether UK voters support or oppose an unknown future deal between the UK and EU. The only way to determine if UK voters support or oppose a EU-UK deal is to have a referendum on that specific deal after it has been agreed upon.

Labour opposes rise in corporation tax in Autumn Budget

Keir Starmer’s spokesman has rejected mooted Tory plans for a rise in fuel duty, corporation tax and capital gains tax in the budget.

The Labour leader’s spokesman told lobby journalists this afternoon that it is “absolutely the wrong time to be talking about tax rises”.

The comments come as newspapers report that “Treasury officials are drawing up plans for a £30bn tax raid on the wealthy, businesses, pensions and foreign aid — to plug a hole in the nation’s finances caused by the coronavirus crisis.”

The Times reports that Rishi Sunak, the chancellor, is considering a proposal to increase corporation tax from 19% to 24% in the November budget, a move that would raise £12bn next year, alongside a hike capital gains tax.

Other papers noted that the 10-year freeze on fuel duty – which climate campaigners say is a catastrophe for the environment – could also be finally increasing. But No 10 sources have scrambled to deny the claims. As Politico reported today: “The policy does not appear to have survived 24 hours after appearing on the front page of Tuesday’s Sun“.

Labour backed a rise in corporation tax in its 2019 manifesto. as did Keir Starmer during his leadership campaign. Starmer also backed a Green New Deal in his campaign.

However, speaking to journalists, Starmer’s spokesman said the government should not be “floating ideas for new tax rises” amid an economic crisis.

This includes 45% of those in seats the Conservatives gained at the last election. When we asked those who say they have a more positive view of Labour party why that was, common responses included the change in leadership and Starmer being a better, competent and credible leader, and labour’s policies being more realistic.

So it sounds like the Tories are proposing some form of wealth taxes with Labour opposed. Am I reading this correctly?

Ken Burch

A Labour Party that opposes tax rises can't do anything distinguishable from a Tory government.  And the voters never wanted Labour to be a "centre ground" party again.

If Labour runs the next election on a non-left wing platform, nobody would even want it to win-and no one would notice if it did.

I think Bolivia and Venezuela have proven to be the exceptions but apparently only electoral parties that have mass movements behind them that are ready to face down the fascists in the streets can actually rule for any length of time. I do not think that a real left wing party will ever win power federally in my country. Our British based constitution and system of government was designed to ensure that very thing will not happen.

But you missed the really important news. So, those who were pushing to get rid of Corbyn will be more than satisfied with Starmer's performance so far. Polls, after all, are irrelevant to neoliberals, only principles matter.

Keir has been incompetent at opposing Johnson- but he appears to be EXTREMELY competent at doing what some of those who supported his election as Labour seem to have wanted done: DESTROYING the Labour Party as a significant electoral force in UK politics.

If they do worse at the May local/Scottish parliament/Senedd Cymru(Welsh Senedd) elections than the party ever did under Corbyn in any equivalent contests, it is very difficult to imagine the party ever winning ANY elections at any level under Starmer's leadership.

The only people who would be happy about that are about the people who want Labour to abolish itself and join a new, merged party with the LibDems- a party, it goes without saying, that would not disagree with the Tories on any significant number of issues.

The only thing that stands out loud and clear presently is that the Brexit promoters and supporters have ripped the guts out of the country, and the UK's future is dismal to say the least, and most probably appears heading for catastrophe.
