Joe Biden’s Endearing Defense of His Son Hunter
A supposed “gotcha” is really a sad, humanizing portrait of a family working through a difficult time.
Last week, the New York Post began publishing reports on a series of photos, emails, and documents allegedly taken from a laptop hard drive that belonged to Hunter Biden, the son of Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden. As it became increasingly clear that the Post was using hacked, unverified information that may have been manipulated by a foreign entity for the purposes of influencing the upcoming presidential election, social media companies started to ban or otherwise attempt to reduce the spread of the Post’s initial story. But the tabloid continued printing information from the hard drive, a copy of which it says it received from disgraced Donald Trump associate and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
Given that Giuliani and Steve Bannon were the Post’s two sources of information about the hard drive, the provenance of the Rupert Murdoch–owned paper’s information is more than a little suspect. Giuliani, for one, has said that there’s a 50-50 chance he worked with a Russian spy to dig up embarrassing material about the Biden family. And the computer repair shop owner who allegedly obtained the hard drive and turned it over to Giuliani’s lawyer doesn’t exactly seem like a trustworthy fellow either. So it is with a massive grain of salt that we consider the contents of the hard drive itself. One of the stories contains an alleged text exchange between Hunter and Joe Biden from two months before Joe announced his presidential campaign. It began with a text Joe sent around 7 a.m. to Hunter, who was residing in a rehab facility. “Good morning my beautiful son,” the text reads. “I miss you and love you. Dad.”
It was a moment of affection in the face of cruelty that drew a bright line between Trump’s character and Joe Biden’s.
Whether or not the hacked material is accurate and complete, the father-son text exchange does the exact opposite of what Giuliani and Trump have been trying to do. For years, Trump and his allies have attempted to paint Hunter as the beneficiary of (Trump-style) nepotism and a shameful sleazeball who reflects poorly on his father. Yet, in the text conversation, Biden comes off as loving and concerned. Hunter certainly admits to struggling with addiction and the pressures of living under intense public scrutiny, but there is nothing politically damaging about the exchange—only a sad, humanizing portrait of a family working through a difficult time.
Republicans have been mocking Hunter for his substance use disorder for a long while. Rep. Matt Gaetz brought it up in the context of Trump’s impeachment, as supposed proof of Hunter’s inability to get a job on his own merits without some shady finagling from his father. During the first 2020 presidential debate, as Joe Biden was talking about his other son Beau (who died of brain cancer), Trump said Hunter was “dishonorably discharged”—he wasn’t—from the military for cocaine use. The next day, Donald Trump Jr. called him “crackhead Hunter” on Glenn Beck’s talk show.
Joe Biden got a lot of deserved credit for his indignant defense of Hunter during the debate. “My son, like a lot of people you know at home, had a drug problem,” he said. “He’s overtaken it. He’s fixed it. He’s worked on it. And I’m proud of him.” That last part, the declaration of parental pride in response to an attempted public shaming, felt like it might have been directed at Hunter himself, more than any voter or viewer. It was a moment of affection in the face of cruelty that drew a bright line between Trump’s character and Joe Biden’s. If this text exchange is real, that debate moment gains even more meaning. (And if the exchange is made up, it says plenty about the people crafting it as an attack.)
Joe Biden’s alleged texts to his son aren’t particularly remarkable in the genre of parent-child communication. The subject matter is specific to a political family—Hunter is angry because he believes his father’s campaign team is portraying him as “the uncontrollable troubled tax cheat philanderer sex and drug addict that you tried so hard to fix but couldn’t”—but the messages of care and encouragement feel universal to a loving relationship. When Hunter tells Joe that his former sister-in-law and romantic partner called him “an embarrassment” to the Biden family, Joe assures him that she is wrong. Joe praises his granddaughters, Hunter’s children, and asks Hunter to call him “when you can and feel like it.” Even the format of Joe’s texts, each of which is full of line breaks and signed “Love” or “Dad,” will feel familiar to anyone who’s texted with a relative over the age of 60. That familiarity and the raw intimacy of the conversation provide a seemingly rare window into the human life of a political candidate. Those who see themselves or their loved ones in the exchange may feel defensive of Biden, a loving father trying to see his son through the compounding trials of addiction and political attacks.
As a foil to the way Trump conducts his personal relationships, the Biden texts are bracingly tender. The current president appears to favor his children in proportion to their loyalty and political utility. He has made multiple public comments on the sexual desirability of one daughter’s body, and he’s allegedly ridiculed the other’s. Trump rushes to disassociate himself from those who reveal any semblance of vulnerability. Even when his wife and son had COVID-19—when it would have been politically advantageous for him to mention his love for them—his public statements were limited to his own condition. He expressed no concern on their behalf.
Caring for a loved one is possibly the most relatable and endearing human experience. It should be a gimme for a political candidate to make visible whatever affection he has for his family. And yet! The president who has inspired the most passionate right-wing movement in a generation, whose approval ratings are astonishingly consistent, whose political party dared not devise an agenda beyond “whatever the president wants is fine with us,” is incapable of exuding any plausible—let alone genuine!—warmth toward his kin. Unconditional love does not appear in the emotional vocabulary of a man whose mercurial favor fluctuates with every shift in his self-interest.
Joe Biden’s palpable love for his son is a reminder of what it could feel like to have a love-capable person leading the country again—a person with the capacity for gentleness as well as rage, someone who does not derive his life’s sole satisfaction from self-aggrandizement and contempt. In a time of concurrent national crises, with hundreds of thousands of Americans grieving friends and family members lost to an ongoing pandemic, it could be nice to have someone at the top who knows the value of voicing and acting on compassion. Joe has suffered a great deal of grief—decades before Beau’s death, he lost his first wife and infant daughter in a 1972 car crash—and his well-known ability to comfort those in mourning has been called his “superpower.” The alleged texts Joe sent, in addition to his public defense of Hunter, flesh out another, related facet of his family life: his role as a father who showers his son with effusive expressions of love.
Policy matters more than personality. But the personal is political, and the way a leader treats the people closest to him reveals something of his integrity. Whether people believe those living with substance use disorders deserve scorn and social stigma, as Trump and his associates have modeled through their treatment of Hunter Biden, or empathy and support has life-or-death policy implications. Loving a person who’s been addicted to drugs is something nearly half of Americans, including equal numbers of Democrats and Republicans, have in common. Joe Biden is not ashamed to be one of them.

There remain relevant questions (pretending for the moment that people actually care about potential corruption in public office regardless of whose mafia faction of the duopoly they support):
1)Are the emails genuine and untampered with?
Probably, but there is no definitive answer on this yet. The trove of the 80,000 emails including Hunters's videos and photos are obviously a politically motivated "October surprise" to damage Biden, but again that has no necessary bearing on the authenticity.
2)Do they show corruption or illegalities?
Corruption and nepotism, or so it would seem. Illegalities? That is for the whim of the politicized legal system when dealing with the elite, and who at the time influences them. Are the claims of the New York Post true or false, and does it matter?

Hunter Biden introduced his father, then-Vice President Joe Biden, to a top executive at a Ukrainian energy firm less than a year before the elder Biden pressured government officials in Ukraine into firing a prosecutor who was investigating the company, according to emails obtained by The Post.
The never-before-revealed meeting is mentioned in a message of appreciation that Vadym Pozharskyi, an adviser to the board of Burisma, allegedly sent Hunter Biden on April 17, 2015, about a year after Hunter joined the Burisma board at a reported salary of up to $50,000 a month.
“Dear Hunter, thank you for inviting me to DC and giving an opportunity to meet your father and spent [sic] some time together. It’s realty [sic] an honor and pleasure,” the email reads.
An earlier email from May 2014 also shows Pozharskyi, reportedly Burisma’s No. 3 exec, asking Hunter for “advice on how you could use your influence” on the company’s behalf.
The blockbuster correspondence — which flies in the face of Joe Biden’s claim that he’s “never spoken to my son about his overseas business dealings” — is contained in a massive trove of data recovered from a laptop computer....
3)The question remains: "Does it matter? "
The Post's hyperbole that this is "blockbuster" revelations is laughable given the inveterate corruption of the US political system and both factions of the duopoly. As if the corrupt Republicans and Trump don't perpetually lie, and as if Trump Jr. is unconnected to Trump's business and political corruption.
4) Will it make any difference to voters?
It shouldn't. Corruption and nepotism is the rule not the exception of both wings of the duopoly (and the political elite almost everywhere). The shallow team-sport tribalism of US politics will not be thwarted. There will always partisan alignment with one faction or the other but basic support for the most aggressive and destructive regime on the planet will be supported by both--differing only in the minutia of how best to sustain its planet destroying depredations.

As U.S. authorities guard against dirty tricks from foreign adversaries in the run-up to the Nov. 3 presidential election, an unlikely source has come under new scrutiny as a major conduit of Russian-linked disinformation: a Montreal-based website run by a retired University of Ottawa professor.
The platform, Global Research, features a Canadian domain name and offers an ever-expanding collection of conspiracy theories, such as the myth that the 9/11 attacks and COVID-19 pandemic were both planned in order to control the population. The website also hosts articles experts have attributed to a Russian spy agency.
With more than 275,000 Facebook followers and a potential readership in excess of 350,000 per article, the site has the biggest reach among "Kremlin-aligned" disinformation sites, according to the U.S. State Department.
"This is part of a larger effort to sow disarray and distrust within Western democracies," said James Andrew Lewis, a senior researcher at the Washington, D.C.-based think-tank Center for Strategic and International Studies.
U.S. intelligence agencies found Russian state actors mounted a multi-faceted assault before the 2016 U.S. election in an effort to undermine the candidacy of Hillary Clinton and bolster Donald Trump's odds of winning. They say the operation involved spreading false claims and amplifying divisive debates within American society online.
Russia was "so successful in 2016, I'm sure they'll try the same thing again in 2020," Lewis said, "and this website is part of that effort."
Michel Chossudovsky, the University of Ottawa professor emeritus of economics who runs the site, told CBC News through a lawyer that his platform is not a Russian-aligned disinformation site and urged a reporter not to embark on a "witch hunt." In an email, the lawyer also said his client would not agree to an interview.
The FBI has identified such proxy sites as one of the main tools used by Russia this year to sow discord and denigrate Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden.

FBI Director Christopher Wray told a congressional committee in September that the agency has again observed "very active efforts" by Russia to affect the election through "malign foreign influence," including the use of social media, state media and proxies.
Experts say the Canadian-based website fits into the broad network used by Russia to attain its objectives, but also say it is unknown whether there is any co-ordination with Moscow.
A collection of conspiracy theories
Since 2001, Global Research has acted as the online component of the Centre for Research on Globalization, a self-styled "independent research and media organization" run by Chossudovsky.
Along with more than 40 "research associates" and writers, the website lists a post office box within a convenience store as its mailing address, just down the street from Montreal City Hall.
Chossudovsky, a frequent guest on the Russian state TV network RT, serves as the site's editor and is one of its main contributors. He has regularly questioned the seriousness of COVID-19, recently labelling it a "manufactured pandemic."
Disinformation researchers have previously singled out Russia and China as drivers of coronavirus conspiracy theories. One of Global Research's articles, featuring the unsubstantiated claim that the virus first came from a U.S. source, was tweeted in March by a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman and later deleted.
Marcus Kolga, founder of the website DisinfoWatch, said platforms like Global Research give outlandish narratives "an air of legitimacy that they wouldn't otherwise have," what's known as "information laundering."

On Tuesday, for example, Global Research posted a piece underscoring Joe Biden's unproven "cognitive decline." The same article also warned of "the imminent danger of a Kamala Harris presidency," suggesting that as a prosecutor, she disproportionately jailed Black men because of a vendetta against her Jamaican-American father.
The website has also published articles sympathetic to the Russian-backed regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and other pieces critical of NATO, the Western alliance that has sought to contain Moscow's aggression.
The Globe and Mail reported in 2017 that Global Research had become the target of an investigation by NATO's information warfare specialists, who suspected the site was playing a role in amplifying Russian-aligned narratives with little basis in fact.
'No other outlet had half as much reach'
This year, a U.S. State Department report identified Global Research as being part of a network of proxy sites that, while having no visible ties to Moscow, "serve no other purpose but to push pro-Kremlin content."
"It provides plausible deniability for Kremlin officials when proxy sites peddle blatant and dangerous disinformation, allowing them to deflect criticism while still introducing pernicious information," reads the report, published by the State Department's anti-foreign propaganda arm, the Global Engagement Center.
Based on analysis of web traffic on seven such sites from February to April of this year, the report pointed to the Canadian-based platform as the Kremlin-aligned disinformation site with the biggest potential audience. "At more than 350,000 potential readers per article, no other outlet had half as much reach as Global Research," it said.

Kolga, who is also a senior fellow at the Macdonald-Laurier Institute, an Ottawa-based think-tank, said it's hard to contain disinformation once it's posted on such websites and then shared by users on social media — especially on less regulated message boards such as 4Chan and in groups of QAnon believers.
What's more, Kolga said, is that when the main voice of a disinformation website is tied to a respected university, "it makes it believable. That is the problem here."

One-time colleagues distance themselves
Chossudovsky's CV says he joined the University of Ottawa's economics department in 1968 and was promoted to the rank of full professor in 1979. In 2001, the faculty of social sciences granted him its Excellence in Teaching Award for "outstanding performance." The university's website still lists him as professor emeritus.
Two other U of O professors, Marcel Mérette and Yazid Dissou, who appear alongside Chossudovsky in a 2014 picture on his website, said they weren't aware the photo was being used in that way until a CBC reporter brought it to their attention. Both sought to distance themselves from Chossudovsky.
Mérette, currently the university's deputy provost, said he does "not endorse or support the views and opinions expressed by the former professor Chossudovsky on the website or in any other medium."
Dissou, an economics professor, similarly said he doesn't want to be associated with Chossudovsky's "activities or ideas," calling him a "former colleague who retired from the department more than six years ago."
Chossudovsky's website also features photos of him in discussion with the late Cuban communist leader Fidel Castro. Chossudovsky's CV notes he holds Canadian, British and Irish citizenships and that he's been interviewed on such mainstream news outlets as CBC, CTV and BBC.

In 2005, Jewish advocacy organization B'nai Brith complained to the university after the group became aware of Holocaust denial material on Chossudovsky's website.
"We remain concerned that the website still promotes conspiracy theories, including anti-Semitic ones," B'nai Brith Canada CEO Michael Mostyn said in an email to CBC.
He pointed to a range of wild claims on the site, including the unfounded allegations that Israel worked with the U.S. to intentionally unleash COVID-19 and that Israel and Jewish-American politicians staged the 9/11 attacks.
Chossudovsky declined to answer emailed questions from CBC about his links to Russia and the source of his website's funding. Instead, his Montreal-based lawyer, John Philpot, told CBC that Chossudovsky "pursues legitimate journalism as he has done for almost 20 years."
Philpot also said, "please (do) not embark on the type of witch hunt which has become common practice south of the border."
Some authors linked to GRU, report says
Research from Stanford University's Internet Observatory, a program examining abuse in information technologies, found links tying Global Research to Russian military intelligence agency operations. The 2019 study, commissioned by a U.S. Senate intelligence committee, analyzed online content that Facebook attributed to the spy agency commonly known as the GRU.

Based on the research, the State Department said Global Research published or reposted articles by at least seven authors using aliases — or "sock puppet personas," according to the Stanford report — to hide their ties to the GRU. The content remains accessible on the website.
According to a U.S. Justice Department indictment unsealed this week, six alleged officers from the same agency were charged in the U.S. for an array of cyberattacks around the world. The GRU was also linked to a hack of Democratic Party emails in 2016.
In an interview, Stanford research scholar Shelby Grossman said the team looked for evidence that disinformation stemming from the spy agency wound up in the mainstream press.
"It didn't really succeed," she said, as the articles were only published on fringe sites such as Global Research. She said the content was more likely to reach audiences who already tended to believe in conspiracy theories and "weird, Russian-aligned views."
"That being said... this is still dangerous," she said. "This kind of content can further polarize people to hold incorrect beliefs."

"We can thank liberals for turning social media platforms into the biggest champions of censorship in the country. Frustrated in the wake of the 2016 election debacle, they rushed to cover up for their own failures and used Russia as their scapegoat. The big technology companies are on the Democratic side for the duopoly. They are major contributors to their campaigns and that means the two groups collude with one another. The Democrats tell big technology firms what they want, and they happily comply. The post-election impact was immediate, as sites like Black Agenda Report were de-ranked on search engines such as Google. Facebook also limited access to left wing sites. Algorithms have significantly diminished access to independent Youtube channels while elevating the numbers of viewers on corporate media sites.
Their favoritism showed itself again recently when a story of Joe Biden's personal corruption was resurrected. The New York Post obtained photos and emails from a laptop that once belonged to Hunter Biden. The younger Biden is best known for profiting off of his father's name. Hunter Biden's activities in Ukraine are not a new story. The emails in the laptop just gave more details about what he and his father were up to. Twitter hypocritically claimed that it won't provide access to leaked or hacked material, but they rightly gave access to the recent leak of Donald Trump's tax returns. The lies and double standards are breathtaking and that is cause for concern.
BAR and other lefist news sites always struggled under the weight of corporate control of news gathering. The 2016 election gave liberals license to live their fantasy of controlling discourse and they joined with their media partners in crime to limit information. It is the Washington Post which created Propaganda Or Not, Propornot, a secretive group which labeled BAR and others as Russian assets in 2016.
The left must beware. The corporate media and their liberal friends may pretend to target the right, but it is leftists who they really want to silence. They are the threat to the [Dems] fake progressive party which gets support from people who should have abandoned them long ago. The left reveals the plot twists of the kabuki play and must be shut up and shut down. Joe Biden got protection when he needed it most. Any scandal that might hurt Biden will be hushed up lest the house of cards falls down. But all of the people don't take part in the charade..."

I was surprised to hear Biden mention the transition from fossil fuels in the debate when he knows that he needs Pennsylvania and Ohio. I think that he could have just kept his mouth shut on that one issue. That was a very big blunder on his part.
The transition away from fossil fuels is necessary and wise. You just don't blurt things out like that during debates to give your opponent leverage during the campaign.
Trump needs Florida and Pennsylvania. Trump has the advantage in Florida. Trump can now win the election if he takes Pennsylvania.
Biden never had Pennsylvania secured. I have heard reports that the state was always much closer than what the pollsters are claiming.
This is so unsettling.
