My hunch is that the additional ballots that will be counted in 2 weeks will increase the size of Premier John Horgan's First NDP Majority Government. In the meantime who will be going into his cabinet? Apart from the pandemic there are many issues facing the government. With the Greens gone from the decision-making process very capable George Heyman will no doubt have a lot more clout concerning the Environment Adrian Dix in Health will no doubt have his hands full With the majority government Harry Bains in Labour will now be able to bring in some progressive legislation that the Greens had been blocking. Lana Popham in Agriculture will have to find some solutions to replacing the land lost from the ALR because of the Site C project Taking over the departed Speaker's role, Raj Chauhan will do a fine job Housing is a massive challenge and hopefully Selina Robinson will quickly get a lot more co-operatives off the ground. Reviving ICBC and the money-laundering inquiry will keep David Eby busy as usual Who is going to replace Carole James in Finance? And who will take over Transportation - Bowinn Ma? Finally and hard to believe but it appears that the NDP will now control the North Shore with more seats there than any other party. Truly amazin'
Canada's most popular premier's first NDP majority government
The illegal occupation and despoilation of unceded stolen lands of sovereign Indigenous nations continues apace under an NDP settler regime. (Settler politics uber alles) Stop voting for violent 'BC' colonialism, ecocide and genocide while pretending to support Indigenous sovereignty. Stop TMX! Site C, etc
["Looks like Horgan will become even more arrogant! Doesn't bode well for Indigenous Policy!] BC NDP will form decisive majority government. CBC News."

With the Greens gone from the decision-making process
They were never in the decision making process but without the Green's support the NDP would have been in opposition, even if those "conservatives" had just said we will vote on an issue by issue basis. Now that the NDP has its much sought after dictatorship it will have no excuse for not showing its true colours. No restraints from anyone for up to five years so lets bring on the New Jerusalem.
Lets have programs rolled out that like Barrett's years will have long lasting positive effects. I await the budget magic and hope that we don't get a Clark government instead.

You are confusing right wing coalitions. The Socreds won seats on VI when the Liberals were winning nada zip. Then again in the Comox Valley Stan Hagen was elected as a Socred and then a few years later elected as a Liberal. I suspect he thought it was pretty much the same old gang.
Wilkinson bits the dust.
Perhaps the right-wing Greens can now join forces with the right-wing Liberals.

Yeah NorthReport is probably not from Vancouver Island. Seems like a Glen Clark NDPer. I really hope the party leadership has learned from that experience and doesn't go full "enemies of British Columbia" or the Island will be in play again provincially and federally. A good start would be finally banning old growth logging.

I don't know how to say none in Nuu-chah-nulth, but it's ningun in Spanish. (Nada means 'nothing'.)

Why do you insist on calling the BC Greens "right wing"?
And again, given that the NDP just won in a freaking landslide, why are you sounding so vindictive?
If the Greens actually were right-wing, you'd actually need to thank them, because they then would have been responsible for facilitating the BC Liberals' defeat.
The Greens are right-wing, provincially and federally in Canada. Where do you think Elizabeth May came from? Who do you think stopped the NDP promise of $400 to BC renters?
Now speaking about some other right-wingers, the Liberal Leader Wilkinson announcved he is stepping down today, but not until they choose a new leader. My hunch is that there will be a caucus revolt and Wilkinson will be tossed sooner rather than later.
Now life gets interesting, and the fun starts, in BC!

There is an article in the Globe and Mail: "In BC, the Green Party has wilted". Do you buy that?
There were some exit polls of people who voted by mail, although how would you determine that, that showed even higher NDP support than election nite.
Some people are suggesting that the Green Leader might not hold onto her seat.
Do you buy that?
I agree but not to worry. BC has another right-wing group: the Greens.

After the BC NDP got reduced to 2 seats in the 2001 election there were a whole bunch of media predictions that the party would never recover, would never win another election again. How did that pan out?
I'll settle for a 16 consecutive years of NDP government run

Yeah hopefully. The Liberals fully deserve to be annihilated. I talked to several small business owners that were happy with the NDP which was not something I heard a lot in the late nineties. The historical anti-NDP vote does seem to be dying off a little. I think the sheer criminal grift of the Liberals became too much for what was a lot of their base in the early oughts and Vancouver has become pretty comfortable with centre-left governance.
I do think the Liberals have a branding problem. A lot of their natural base in rural areas are so used to just hating the Liberal brand federally that it causes a bit of cognitive dissonance when they are expected to rally behind it provincially. But I doubt a Conservative party would ever be anything but a spoiler or a rump party in FPTP with no ability to pick up urban or coastal ridings.
The ball is in the NDP's court. Hopefully, they don't screw this up. And I hope they actually have some vision and don't just offer bandaid solutions.
Who do you think stopped the NDP promise of $400 to BC renters?
Yeah, we'd be talking about the housing crisis in the past tense if that had gone through.. Hopefully, one benefit of this majority is that we get to see more long-term thinking and transformative policies.
You can do both.
Hopefully the NDP will bring BC Ferries back under the Transportation Ministry where it belongs as the Ferries are an integral part of our transportation system

Canada's most popular politician has an abundance of riches to choose from for his next scandal-free NDP cabinet

This election shifted the political landscape in BC
The recent provincial election realigned the political landscape like rarely before, but it is far from clear whether the changes will be lasting.
For example, does the NDP’s breakthrough in places like Richmond, Langley and Chilliwack represent a permanent beachhead for the party on which to build further successes? Or is this shift a temporary one that is reflective of people being hesitant to embrace change and uncertainty in politics while we are mired in a pandemic and economic crisis?
The NDP certainly now has the chance to make this realignment of the electoral map a lasting one. For the next four years, it will be in a position to connect with voters in places never considered particularly friendly towards the party in the past.
Certainly, the NDP benefited in this election from a disastrous campaign by the BC Liberals, who were saddled with a leader who not only was unable to resonate with voters but who may well have turned a bad situation into a terrible one.
Indeed, a look at the difference in votes for the two main parties tells a stark story.
In the 2017 election, less than 1,700 votes separated the two parties provincewide, with the BC Liberals on top.
This time, the NDP is ahead by almost 120,000 votes and that gap will likely grow when the mail-in and absentee ballots are counted.
Even before the final count is conducted, it is clear the NDP has cemented its hold on places like Burnaby, North Vancouver, the Tri-Cities and Vancouver Island. The party’s margin of victory has only grown.
However, both the NDP and the BC Liberals face new and opposite challenges with this electoral realignment.
The NDP has pushed the BC Liberals, for the most part, to the outer edges of Metro Vancouver, which gives the NDP more seats in the riding-rich suburbs.
The flip side to that arrangement is that the NDP is under-represented outside of Metro Vancouver and Vancouver Island. Premier John Horgan has been quick to make the point that a comfortable majority in the legislature will free him up to travel the province more.
The BC Liberals have the opposite problem. They are increasingly a regional, rural-based party and have been elbowed out of many urban and suburban areas.
The chief problem with this situation, of course, is that the party will never regain power unless it can re-establish itself in Metro Vancouver, where half the ridings are located. To do that, the party must make itself younger and more diverse in terms of gender and ethnicity when it comes to finding candidates.
The next four years will reveal much about this new realignment and a number of questions will arise over time.
For example, can the BC Liberals – essentially a coalition party of liberals and conservatives – remain intact as it undergoes a much-needed makeover?
Can the BC Greens achieve relevance in the legislature now that they are no longer junior partners in a minority government?
In addition, can the NDP continue its wave of popularity as the pandemic continues unimpeded with the inevitable economic mayhem accompanying it? Will it remain in the political centre or drift, over time, to the left?
This past election is like few we have ever experienced, but its aftershocks will be felt for a long time.

Time for John Horgan to fire everyone in the civil service that is not loyal to the NDP and give those great jobs to his NDP supporters
Seriously? The idea that the civil service exists as a wing of the elected government to be stuffed with cronies and loyalists is the kind of garbage that came out of Harper's government. Michael Wernick resigned when it became clear he was acting as Trudeau's partisan henchman instead of Clerk of the Privy Council. There's a division between politics and administration for a reason.
