Coronavirus: what Canadians need to know

I have been curious for the past many weeks about the disappearance of Manitoba Shared Health Chief Nursing Officer Lanette Siragusa from the public information campaign. Aren't public health nurses on the forefront of doing COVID-19 contact tracing (and possibly testing before some of it was farmed out to Dynacare)?

As for the three Winnipeg men referenced above who are complaining about follow-up on contact lists, why did the go in for testing? If I suspected I was exposed and went in for testing, I would alert anyone I knew personally that I had been in contact with in the last 2 week period before getting results. But I would wait for public health to follow up on any public places I might have been in during that period.

Aristotleded24

Honestly, I'm not sure there's any point in even following the list of exposures the province publishes. Sometimes the exposures are posted almost a week (or even more) after the exposure happened. Then the official instructions are that anyone there doesn't need to isolate but should watch for symptoms. We're already watching for the specified symptoms anyways, so what good is that list anyways?

That's why I feel very safe going to a gym during this time (as soon as I can find one close to me that is open). Gyms already kept detailed records of who comes and goes and for what time. I'm sure if there was a covid exposure that they would be able to track me down and let me know right away. "Some guy might have been on this bus route at such-and-such a time" sounds more nebulous to me.

So much for "no second wave in Sweden"

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/sweden/

Here is a question I have about the data. This is the time of year when we can expect higher cases of respiratory illnesses and infections. We are also seeing a rise in coronavirus cases, in many cases breaking records each day. Is there any data showing the number of coronavirus cases compared to all other respiratory infections? Are covid cases happening on top of the usual respiratory infections we have this time of year? Is the increase in covid cases coindicent with a drop in the numbers for all other infections? Is the total number of all respiratory infections what you would expect for this time of year, or is there any major deviation in any direction?

Sweden took much longer go get to this point than most other European countries. The rising infection curve in Sweden is not as sharp as you are seeing in other European countries, which have been breaking or in some cases shattering new records on a daily basis. We will see how they do. This won't go on forever. Eventually the numbers in all of these countries are going to start falling.

With all due respect to the World Health Organization, why is this even a concern to them? Nearly every country in the Northern Hemisphere has the capacity to handle health care issues on its own without assistance.

Aristotleded24

From the al-Jazeera link:

Quote:
The WHO has warned the co-circulation of the annual flu season in winter months and COVID-19 – both of which cause respiratory illness – could place an additional burden on vulnerable populations and healthcare systems that are already stretched because of the pandemic.

You mean how covid and the flu combined to knock over health care systems during the southern hemisphere flu season?

Quote:
Health systems across the southern hemisphere were bracing a few months ago for their annual surge in influenza cases, which alongside Covid-19 could have overwhelmed hospitals. They never came.

Many countries in the southern half of the globe have instead experienced either record low levels of flu or none at all, public health specialists in Australia, New Zealand and South America have said, sparing potentially tens of thousands of lives and offering a glimmer of hope as winter approaches in the northern hemisphere.

General practitioners in New Zealand have not detected a single influenza case since they started screening patients in June, health data shows; last year about 57% of the samples they collected were positive.

Pondering

I'm getting my flu vaccine in November because it is delivered in my building but I expect the flu season to be way down due to precautions taken for Covid.

I'm not sure what you think the role of the WHO is.

  • providing leadership on matters critical to health and engaging in partnerships where joint action is needed;
  • shaping the research agenda and stimulating the generation, translation and dissemination of valuable knowledge;
  • setting norms and standards and promoting and monitoring their implementation;
  • articulating ethical and evidence-based policy options;
  • providing technical support, catalysing change, and building sustainable institutional capacity; and
  • monitoring the health situation and assessing health trends.

A study from Vanderbilt University shows quite clearly the effect of mask mandates in Tennessee. These 4 graphs show the increase/decrease in patients hospitalized for covid relative to July 1 for 4 categories of hospitals, depending on the percentage of their patients who live in counties with mask mandates. The results are striking, to say the least.

That's a very interesting study, Michael. It suggests that in that particular context in Tennessee, mask use did make a difference in the load in hospital cases. Meanwhile, there was a Danish study about mask use that the authors are having a hard time finding someone to publish. We don't know what's gonig on, but we can speculate. The current conventional wisdom is that masks work and should be worn. Would a study suggesting that conclusion have any difficulty being published in this environment? Does the fact that this particular study is not being published suggest that the results go against the conventional wisdom? If information challenging the current scientific conventional wisdom is being suppressed, it would be far from the first time in history that the scientific establishment closed ranks against an idea that eventually came to be accepted.

Either way, I think it's in the public interest to know the results of the Danish study. More data leads to more understanding, which in turn leads to better decisions, which in turn leads to better outcomes.

Michael Moriarity

I can see why there is reluctance to publish that Danish study. The methodology is idiotic. They had a test group wear masks, and they had a control group with no masks, and they compared which group was more likely to get covid. They may very well have shown no correlation at all between mask use and probability of infection. However, as I have patiently explained several times on this board, that is totally the wrong question to ask.

The question of interest is: if everyone in a population wears a mask, how much will that lower the rate of transmission? This study does nothing to answer that question and is therefore a big waste of the money and resources. However, if published in a prestigious journal, it will be misinterpreted by motivated thinkers (and science -illiterate journalists) as proof of the important question which it did not even address.

Not if it is garbage data.

“We cannot start discussing what they are dissatisfied with, because in that case we must also explain what the study showed – and we do not want to discuss that until it is published,” explains Christian Torp-Pedersen.

Why not? If three major journals have refused to publish it may never happen. If they believe the data they assembled is being surpressed they could self-publish and allow the scientific community to weigh in. If it is a serious study then others will want to duplicate it. It's impossible to supress the results against their will.

Quote:

Broad shutdowns will start in Winnipeg and surrounding areas on Monday as the province moves its capital area to the red, or critical, level on its pandemic response scale in the face of a rising tide of COVID-19 cases.

Movie theatres, concert halls, sport facilities, and restaurant and bar dining rooms will be ordered to close starting Monday, Manitoba's Chief Provincial Public Health Officer Dr. Brent Roussin said Friday.

The rest of Manitoba will move to the orange, or restricted, level starting Monday, Roussin said. The order will limit gathering sizes to five and reduce capacity in public-facing businesses.

The announcement comes as Manitoba shattered its previous record for a daily announcement of COVID-19 cases at 480 new cases, which were identified over the past several days, Roussin said.

The Current: 11/6/2020: A Look at the Spike in COVID-19 Cases Across Canada (radio)

https://www.cbc.ca/listen/live-radio/1-63-the-current/clip/15807334-a-lo...

CBC: "We discuss the spike in COVID-19 cases across Canada with Dr Birinder Narang, a family physician in Burnaby BC; Dr Anand Khumar, an intensive care physician in Winnipeg Manitoba; and infectious disease specialist Amy Greer, Canada research chair in population disease modeling @1:35

Then, as Canada passes 250,000 cases of COVID-19 the Globe and Mail's health columnist, Andre Picard, discusses the the grim milestone and the latest efforts to curb the spread. @47:00...

AP: "Canada's at a place now that's quite dangerous. Yesterday, we had almost 4,000 cases. That's double the peak of the first wave. People don't realize how bad it's getting...I think we just have governments, particularly conservative governments, saying we're going to get back to work and it doesn't matter what the cost is.

We've all heard about the Great Barrington Declaration. What Canada's doing now is going 'Great Barringtonesque', if I can put it that way. Saying we're ready to sacrifice people whether they be older people, people with disabilities, we're ready to sacrifice them now to get people back in bars and restaurants. That's the unstated policy that's going on now in places like Ontario,  Alberta and Manitoba.

CBC: Dr Samir Sinha, who's the Director of Geriatrics at Mt Sinai and was the architect of that province's seniors' strategy, says he believes what's happening in Ontario is a 'herd immunity plan'. He worries that seniors will be sacrificial lambs. Is he right?

AP: Well, the numbers bear him out. Sixty percent of the deaths in the second wave so far are back in our LTC Homes. We have 355 outbreaks in LTCs across Canada the last time I checked. This [news] dominated the first wave, but now we're not paying attention to it. But it's killing our elders. The phrase 'we have to learn to live with COVID' has been coopted to mean we  just throw the doors wide open. It's not about abandoning people in elder-care facilities but making them safer to ensure they're not at risk and be cautious about what and how we reopen.

Some jurisdictions to their credit have said we're going to protect our elders, we're not going to allow this into old age homes. Some countries have done that with zero deaths. Canada has thousands. I think it's in our nature to be kind of wishy-washy. We do something one week and something different the next and end up not doing very well at anything..."  - Andre Picard - Globe and Mail

I entirely agree. The cold hard truth is that the governments are ready, able and willing to let you and/or your elders get sick and die. For profits and money. And your silence indicates you will do nothing to stop them.

"Just got home from a busy day at work to the news of 800 cases and limited contact tracing. We have lost the plot. The government has decided to prioritize 'the economy' ahead of people. They've forgotten that the economy is *made by people.*"

And we continually refuse to learn the lesson that harming the natural world comes back to hurt us. It was China's wet animal markets that were implicated in the spread of corona from bats to humans. Now we have these "mink farms?" What's going on with this? Instead of culling the mink, why not show them resepct and let them run free, where they won't spread infectious diseases nearly so much?

Pondering

They are not wild mink. They are bred, which is wrong, but these mink would not have ever lived were it not for the desire for their fur. Letting them loose in the wild to infect other animals isn't a good idea.
