I think the people who've been manipulated by Trump are also victims of Trump's fascistic cult of personality.Unfortunately the people who stormed the Capitol felt they were following the instructions given to them by their president. They thought, and probably many still do, that their actions were patriotic.

Lauria: Capitol Incident a Dress Rehearsal

https://consortiumnews.com/2021/01/08/capitol-incident-a-dress-rehearsal/

"...What this event did is send a message, which went beyond claims of a stolen election, a message that no one in Congress or the media will openly acknowledge, if they've gotten the message at all, namely, that as long as Congress and the rest of the Establishment continue to ignore ordinary Americans' interests and serve only their own, the anger and desperation in the land will explode, rendering Wednesday's events merely  a dress rehearsal for what may well turn into a full-blown insurrection. Congress must understand this before it's too late."

The polling shows the opposite.

Newsweek wrote:

New polling by Ipsos released on Thursday found that 51 percent of Americans view the actions of Trump's supporters as an attempted coup. Additionally, 70 percent of Americans said they opposed the violent insurrection. At the same time, the polling found that 19 percent of American backed the riot, while 31 percent said the protests were necessary to protect the nation.

Similar polling released by YouGov on Thursday morning showed that 45 percent of Republicans back the pro-Trump assault on the nation's Capitol. Unsurprisingly, the vast majority—96 percent—of Democrats said they were opposed to the violence, which was aimed at overturning Biden's election.

I think that both the views can co-exist. No insurrection is started by a majority, they generally just try to keep their heads down and stay among the living. Many of Trump's supporters are well armed and belong to paramilitary style gangs and a significant number of them have police and military training. So having one in five people ready to pick up arms does indeed constitute a potential for insurrection especially if they believe themselves to be the real patriots. .

melovesproles

I think that both the views can co-exist.

Yeah exactly. The extreme wing has overstepped and entered a place where the broader conservative Republican movement is no longer comfortable . This can be seen in the total dissonance in their messaging. What is the Republican line?  Was this Antifa or Trump's people expressing their love? I thought Trump loved the 'protesters.' Does Trump love Antifa now?  I'm still totally confused.

It's good that they are turning on each other. It's good that the degree to which fascism has taken root in the police, militia, and ex-military has been exposed for all to see. That should be addressed and stomped out. That can be done without the Democrats pushing for an expansion of anti-terrorism legislation ,which they are already eager to ram through. They can use existing legislation to hold those accountable who played in part in encouraging and enacting this little show of fascist bullying. There is both the danger that the Democrats will use this to push through more security state BS and the danger that they will not take advantage of the opportunity to stomp out the fascism that is metastisizing.

I wonder about a country with two parties and the largest military on the planet when a significant part of the population thinks the President is controlled by a foreign power. If that was not just bat shit crazy as a concept now the other half of the duopoly is claiming the incoming President is controlled by a different foreign power.

The reality is that neither of these men are actually in charge but not because they are under the thrall of foreigners. As in Canada the financial oligarchy has the ear of government and calls the shots.

Democrats Use Capitol Incident to Suppress...

https://t.co/h9PLMhbtsE?amp=1

"...In 2019 Adam Schiff, the unhinged Russia-basher who falsely claimed he had evidence of Trump collusion with Russia, introduced a 'domestic terrorism' bill that will now likely be taken up. The actual bill Schiff introduced is quite general and covers a wide range of actions as well as attempts to take such actions or conspiring to do them. Such a law will of course not only be used against the 'white supremacists' Schiff claims to dislike but as the ACLU pointed out, primarily against the left and minorities.

As a second consequence of the Capitol incident, the tech monopoly companies, which are largely aligned with the corporate Democrats, took coordinated actions to disrupt the communications between Trump and his political followers as well as with the general political right. It wasn't only Trump that was banned: thousands of Twitter accounts, mostly not prominent ones, were culled overnight. This was an organized and likely long planned campaign initiated by the incoming Biden administration.

It was obvious within about 10 minutes on Wednesday that this 'crisis' would be exploited to drastically ramp up censorship and suppress political speech. None of this is about 'safety', it's about purposely inflating a threat in order to assert political and cultural dominance. The new corporate authoritarian liberal-left monoculture is going to be absolutely ruthless - and in 12 days it is merging with the state. This is only the beginning..."

A Biden Administration Will:

  • Restore funding for a critical effort to address domestic terrorism which the Trump administration has cut.
  • Work for a domestic terrorism law that respects free speech and civil liberties, while making the same commitment to root out domestic terrorism as we have to stopping international terrorism...

Are people a little bit crazy? Yes, they're under too much pressure, decades of being overworked and underpaid, over-indebted and under appreciated take their toll.

And by the way, they will continue to do so until basic changes happen in this country, changes far beyond anything that the establishment of the Democratic Party and especially Joe Biden have ever endorsed, discussed or initiated..."

ACLU AGAIN CALLS FOR IMPEACHMENT OF PRESIDENT TRUMP; 10 January 2021

Quote:

"The Board now resolves by a unanimous vote that President Trump has committed additional impeachable offenses, violated his oath to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution, and poses a ‘grave and imminent threat to civil liberties’ by engaging in an extended pattern of bad-faith conduct designed to subvert the results of a democratic election, thereby violating the core principles of our constitutional democracy: the right of the people to choose their representatives, and the obligation of officials to abide by the results of free and fair elections, and ensure the peaceful transition of power.

"The pattern includes:

  • Repeatedly making knowingly false statements about voter fraud and improprieties designed to undermine the legitimacy of the election results, including in a series of frivolous lawsuits, without evidence to support the claims;
  • Pressuring election officials in several states, including Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Georgia, to interfere with the results of the election, including a Jan. 2 taped phone call in which he abused the power of the presidency by demanding that the Georgia secretary of state ‘find 11,780 votes,’ and threatened criminal liability if the secretary of state did not do so;
  • Seeking to disenfranchise people of color by targeting many of these efforts at counties and jurisdictions, such as in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, and Wisconsin, with predominantly Black or Brown populations;
  • Directing Vice President Pence to block Congress’ certification of the Electoral College results, where the vice president had neither the authority nor the grounds to do so; and
  • Urging an unruly mob to riot at the United States Capitol on Jan. 6, in an effort to prevent the certification of the Electoral College results and to intimidate members of Congress from carrying out their constitutional duties.

Eugene Goodman is a hero! He saved the lives of senators from Trump's mob!

How a brave policeman lured Capitol attackers away from US Senate chamber; South China Morning Post; 11 January 2021

Quote:

Officer Eugene Goodman is seen on video shoving a man in a QAnon shirt and leading angry Trump-supporters on a chase in opposite direction from US lawmakers.

...

In the confrontation, Goodman puts himself between a man wearing a black T-shirt for the QAnon conspiracy movement and a hallway leading to the Senate chambers, then shoves the person to induce him and the crowd to chase Goodman toward officers in the opposite direction.

...

“As trump’s fascist mob ransacked the US Capitol, this brave USCP officer kept murderous rioters away from the Senate chamber and saved the lives of those inside. God bless him for his courage,” congressman Bill Pascrell wrote in a Twitter message on Sunday.
