What new legislation?

The legislation Schiff brought forward, which the ACLU opposes, and Biden namechecked a couple of days ago. But really I'd say using this to expand anti-terrorism legislation in general would be something I would oppose. Any chance you will give a non-cagey opinion on that or do you need a few months? I think everyone gets that you hate Trump since you post that dozens of times a week. Any other hot takes?

If the ACLU opposes it, I'd be very wary of the legislation, or any knee jerk responses.  But I haven't seen the details.  What is needed is for law enforcement to take the threat of right-wing terrorism more seriously.

I went to the youtube video. His attack on moderates and his misleading claim that twitter is the public square doesn't impress me nor does his equating of  what happened in Hong Kong to what happened in Washington. He is doing it to build his argument, but that is what Trump did. Twist the truth to support your claims.

Fox News lies about trending topic on Twitter of violent threat against VP Mike Pence

A video circulated of President Trump’s supporters storming the Capitol and chanting, “Hang Mike Pence.” Fox News makes it sound like this message came from Twitter.

I thought this article on the end of the trump presidency was interesting and I largely agree with the author's perspective:

https://www.counterpunch.org/2021/01/11/in-the-end-he-lost/

"Repeat: Trump never commanded a fascist party. He galvanized a disparate menagerie of white nationalists, neonazis, klansmen, conspiracy cultists, religious idiots, grandmas concerned about pedophile cannibals led by the lizard people kidnapping our children. But they never constituted a coherent, disciplined movement.

The Trump tour concludes January 20. It may be viewed in future as an era of flirtation with fascism, in which the nation came “this close” to abandoning the manifest goodness of constitutional democracy for the obvious evil of autocratic rule. But in the end Biden normalcy triumphs."  ..

"I would not downplay the evil a madman is capable of, given another 12 days on the throne. But he is just that—an isolated, sick, vile madman—not the leader of a movement poised to seize state power. Which is to say, he’s a fake fascist too.

The impending reign of Joe Biden will entail confrontation with China over its control over its own waters, Russia over its borders and NATO expansion, Syria over its desire to preserve its sovereignty versus U.S.-backed terrorists, Iraq over its people’s desire to expel unwelcome U.S. forces, etc. It will be back to Barack Obama-Hillary Clinton normalcy. Cable news anchors considered “left” including those adulating Black Lives Matter will find no contradiction in embracing Harry Truman and the Cold War conception of U.S. (exceptional) leadership of the Free World against “our adversaries.”

The idea is to reject the despicable Trump’s coup attempt by a return to the ferociously familiar. Not fascism; that threat was always over-rated. But war. Just watch. The return to normalcy under decent Joe—after the long dark night of Trump—will be illuminated by the traditional rocket’s red glare, and bombs bursting in air, giving proof that the U.S. flag is still everywhere. And as Joe always says: God bless our troops."

Mobo:   The rehabilitation of neoconservative pundits and politicans like David Frum, John Bolton, Bush Jr, and Colin Powell is one of the most disgusting and annoying aspects of this whole episode.    Trump's incompetance was the best thing about his presidency.    I find the prospect of a competant, united American ruling class terrifying, particularly when the crimes of the most atrocious actors from the past are actively disappearing down the memory hole.

Mobo2000

I want to echo the question asked by meloveproles earlier -- JKR, are you in favour of strong domestic anti-terrorism legislation as a reponse to the attempted "coup"?

More on the antiterrorism legislation Biden team is proposing:

https://news.antiwar.com/2021/01/08/biden-calls-pro-trump-capitol-protes...

https://www.wsj.com/articles/biden-administration-urged-to-take-fresh-lo...

"Biden voted for the 2001 Patriot Act, which greatly expanded the federal government’s surveillance capabilities. He has said the Patriot Act was modeled on a terrorism bill he wrote after the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, that was never signed into law.

“I drafted a terrorism bill after the Oklahoma City bombing,” he was quoted as saying by the New Republic in 2001. “And the bill John Ashcroft sent up was my bill,” he said, referring to then-Attorney General John Ashcroft.

In a 2002 Senate hearing on FBI counterterrorism efforts, Biden again took credit for creating the Patriot Act. “Civil libertarians were opposed to it,” he said. “Right after 1994, and you can ask the attorney general this, because I got a call when he introduced the Patriot Act. He said, ‘Joe, I’m introducing the act basically as you wrote it in 1994. [sic]'”

Democrats in Congress are also calling to prioritize domestic terrorism. Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI), a former CIA analyst and Pentagon official, made her priorities clear in an interview with MSNBC.

“The post 9/11 era is over. We are in a new era. We had a generational event with the infiltration of the Capitol,” Slotkin said. “The single greatest national security threat right now is our internal division. It’s the threat of domestic terrorism.”

Michael Moriarity

As far as I can see, left opinion in the U.S. is pretty much unanimous that more draconian laws are not the solution to the problem of domestic terrorism by right wing militias and similar. What is needed is better enforcement of existing laws and stronger focus on the right wing extremists who actually kill people, rather than water protectors and similar threats to capital.

JKR

I agree that existing U.S. laws seem capable of dealing with domestic terrorism although maybe some laws should be modified to take into account changes in digital communication and social media. I would go along with the ACLU in determining what should be done to deal with domestic terrorism.

Maybe this topic of dealing with domestic terrorism should be moved to a more appropriate thread or maybe it even warrants its own thread?

The problem is that in the US "law enforcement" is synonymous with white supremacy. WTF did you think BLM was about? Now you think those police ans security services somehow contain a fucking answer.

Your system is irreparably broken because Trump is not the disease he is just a minor symptom. The police actions in city after city to BLM and the ongoing deaths of minorities for merely living in America is the disease. Your response is to say trust the Democratic elite to root out white supremacy. You sir are extremely brainwashed.

Another libertarian perspective on the social media blackouts of Trump accounts and assorted conservatives, from Ron Paul, who was recently locked out of his facebook page:

https://original.antiwar.com/paul/2021/01/11/the-war-on-terror-comes-home/

"After all, a look at Biden’s incoming “experts” shows that they will be the same failed neoconservative interventionists who gave us weekly kill lists, endless drone attacks and coups overseas, and even US government killing of American citizens abroad. Progressives who complain about this “back to the future” foreign policy are also sure to find their voices silenced.

Those who continue to argue that the social media companies are purely private ventures acting independent of US government interests are ignoring reality. The corporatist merger of “private” US social media companies with US government foreign policy goals has a long history and is deeply steeped in the hyper-interventionism of the Obama/Biden era.

“Big Tech” long ago partnered with the Obama/Biden/Clinton State Department to lend their tools to US “soft power” goals overseas. Whether it was ongoing regime change attempts against Iran, the 2009 coup in Honduras, the disastrous US-led coup in Ukraine, “Arab Spring,” the destruction of Syria and Libya, and so many more, the big US tech firms were happy to partner up with the State Department and US intelligence to provide the tools to empower those the US wanted to seize power and to silence those out of favor.

In short, US government elites have been partnering with “Big Tech” overseas for years to decide who has the right to speak and who must be silenced. What has changed now is that this deployment of “soft power” in the service of Washington’s hard power has come home to roost."

Why now, what should be done about this treacherous "coup" against the rightful winner of the election, the victim of the greatest fraud ever perpetuated on Americans, his excellency and rightful  leaderDonald J. Trump? Maybe a mob of Trump's "patriots" should storm the Capitol to "Stop the Steal?"*

melovesproles

The fact that the right thinks they can lose elections by over 7 million votes but somehow have the election stolen from them by an 'overreporting' of votes in primarily black districts shows how far gone they are. We're not talking about millions of alleged 'overreported' votes either. This is shameless anti-democratic whinging about the rigged electoral college system not delivering for them. It's not surprising that the only move they have now is outright intimidation and shows of force. This is fascism but the other fascist ingredients, corporate control of the state and a militarized imperialism, are just as prevalent in the Democrats. The War Liberals should learn the lesson of  you reap what you sow and stop training and dispatching troops to terrorize overseas populations. Eventually they do come home.

The Democrats cozying up with Liz Cheney does not bode well on this front.

What’s important here is the unflinching acknowledgment of two things: First, the claim by Trump and his enablers that he won is a deranged lie and anyone telling it is an enemy of U.S. constitutional democracy. Second, this lie is what incited the violent siege of the Capitol.

These pieces rely on discredited sources who have peddled debunked theories about Dominion’s supposed ties to Venezuela, fraud on Dominion’s machines that resulted in massive vote switching or weighted votes, and other claims falsely stating that there is credible evidence that Dominion acted fraudulently.

These statements are completely false and have no basis in fact. Industry experts and public officials alike have confirmed that Dominion conducted itself appropriately and that there is simply no evidence to support these claims.

There are Canadians who support Trump. From reading your posts it's clear you want Trump to stay in power even if he didn't win the election. It's also clear that you think Biden "stole" the election from Trump. It's also clear you think Trump's coup attempt is "fake news." It's also clear that you downplay Trump's fascism and racism.

JKR, what are you going to do when Trump finally leaves office? Will politics be over for you?

I do think Biden stole the election and I find the evidence for that anything but 'baseless', therefore I do think 'Trump's coup' is fake news. The coup is Biden's and the 'CIA Democrats',  and furthermore, they've been trying for a while.  And unlike you and the babbleactionary cult of believe whatever they tell you -  I have been highly critical of both of these American monsters. You only one.

In reviewing some of my old postings I came upon this from 2017 by the great American leftist James Petras. How prescient he was...

Regime Change Comes Home: The CIA's Overt Threats Against Trump (2017)

https://petras.lahaine.org/?p=2124&print=1

"...The worst catastrophe that could fall on the United States would be a conspiracy of leftist and rightist politicos, the corporate mass media and the 'progressive websites' and pundits providing ideological cover for a CIA-architechted 'regime-change'.

Whatever the limitations of our electoral norms - and there are many - they are now being degraded and discarded in a march toward an elite coup, involving elements of the militarist empire and 'in 'telligence' hierarchy, mass propaganda, a 'red-brown' alliance, salacious gossip and accusations of treason - ('Trump - the Stooge of Moscow') resemble the atmosphere leading to the rise of the Nazi state in Germany.

A broad 'coalition' has joined hands with a most violent and murderous organization (The CIA) and imperial political leadership, which views overtures to peace to be high treason because it limits their drive for world power and a US dominated global political order."

Prosecutors in Georgia appear increasingly likely to open a criminal investigation of President Trump over his attempts to overturn the results of the state’s 2020 election, an inquiry into offenses that would be beyond his federal pardon power.
