Russian opposition figure Navalny detained at passport control after returning to Moscow following five months in Germany

https://on.rt.com/azna

"Russia's prison authority has confirmed the detention. Navalny, who was wanted for breaching the terms of his probation from a previous criminal case, will remain in custody until the court rules on pre-trial restrictions against him, it said. In 2014, he received a 3 1/2 year sentence, suspended for 5 years, for embezzling 30 million rubles (400,000) from two firms, one of them being French cosmetics brand Yves Rocher. This sentence was later extended for a further year. It was due to expire on December 30, 2020.

On December 28, the Federal Penitentiary Service summoned Navalny to a probation officer in Moscow, where he was to check in regularly due to the terms of his sentence. Be he remained in Germany and didn't attend the meeting. The penal service insisted that the protest leader deliberately avoided their supervision, as medical papers published by the German doctors revealed that his health problems were already behind him and he was fit to travel to Russia. The agency believes that his no-show and five other missed appointments should be grounds for Navalny's suspended sentence to be replaced with an actual term behind bars."

Good discussion on promotion of Russia conspiracy theories by Democrat leadership. It's odd how this gets a pass by some who are obsessed with Republican promotion of Qanon conspiracy theories. It all points to a pretty deep malaise in American politics that crosses partisan lines and seems rooted in a contempt by elites for the public. Post-truth has become the only game in town.

Helmer: Oligarchy in Russia - Alexei Navalny's telling Mistake

http://johnhelmer.net/oligarchy-in-russia-alexei-navalnys-telling-mistake/

"On the subject of oligarchy and the treasure storehouses which oligarchs build for themselves, Alexei Navalny reveals that he's following a US and NATO script. This takes no account of how President Vladimir Putin rules Russia or the choice most Russians believe is the preferred alternative to Putin.

The details of the Gelendzhik palace in the film Navalny referred to on January 19 are not new. They have been investigated and widely published by Russian reporters since 2010. In that time they have had no impact on the understanding Russians have of Putin, or his public approval rating.

As Sergei Markov commented on Ekho Mosky radio: 'Now Navalny says this again but does not mention that there is no evidence of Putin's presence there...To Russian minds, Navalny is a foreign successor for Putin's oligarchy, not a Russian replacement, nor an end to the system introduced by Boris Yeltsin with US endorsement."

Amnesty International; Russia: Aleksei Navalny becomes prisoner of conscience after arrest on arrival in Moscow; January 17, 2021

Russian authorities must immediately and unconditionally release prominent Kremlin critic, Aleksei Navalny, detained minutes after he arrived at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport from Berlin, Amnesty International said today. Navalny had been recovering in the German capital after being poisoned in Siberia in August.

“Aleksei Navalny’s arrest is further evidence that Russian authorities are seeking to silence him. His detention only highlights the need to investigate his allegations that he was poisoned by state agents acting on orders from the highest levels,” said Natalia Zviagina, Amnesty International’s Moscow Office Director.

Around 475 members of staff were surveyed for the independent review, which was published in February.

Many staff gave specific examples of experiencing or witnessing bullying by managers.

There were reports of managers belittling staff in meetings and making demeaning and menacing comments, for example: "You should quit. If you stay in this position, your life will be a misery."

There were multiple accounts of discrimination on the basis of race and gender, and in which women, staff of colour, and LGBT employees were allegedly targeted or treated unfairly.

That is a very interesting article. It has caused me to revise my opinion of what sort of threat Navalny poses to Putin. Based on older information, I had thought Navalny to be a loud but powerless figure. If this article is correct, he may now be representing an anti-Putin faction of oligarchs, and could even be the beneficiary of a coup. I had no idea things had gotten to that point in Russia.

I think most Russians don't want to have a "president for life." I dislike Navalny as he is a right-wing nationalist. The only thing he has going for him is his declared opposition to corruption. I think Russia is becoming more and more identical to the U.S. and in some ways worse as they are becoming more racist, sexist, conservative and xenophobic than the U.S. They are better than the U.S. in the area of colonialism but that might be just because they are much weaker than the U.S. is economically. I think the authoritarianism and corruption of Putin's Russia is Russia's Achilles heel much as authoritarianism and corruption were the Achilles heel of Soviet Union. I think Putin's Russia is a repeat of the USSR without the socialism and with many oligarchs that include Putin himself. I think Putin weakens Russia. If Putin put Russia first he would respect term limits and have a successor take his place to allow the rule of law a chance of overcoming the growth of corruption.

What a bizarre view of history. The Tsar was the last ruler of Russia that the American oligarchy liked. Exactly why do you think that the US should be involved in Russian politics. After a hundred years it is getting rather tired. Of course Canada was Ready Aye Ready for that foreign invasion as well.

The North Russia intervention, also known as the Northern Russian expedition, the Archangel campaign, and the Murman deployment, was part of the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War after the October Revolution. The intervention brought about the involvement of foreign troops in the Russian Civil War on the side of the White movement. The movement was ultimately defeated, while the Allied forces withdrew from Northern Russia after fighting a number of defensive actions against the Bolsheviks, such as the Battle of Bolshie Ozerki. The campaign lasted from March 1918, during the final months of World War I, to October 1919.

"The President of Russia, Vladimir Putin has given a great speech to the Davos online forum organized by The World Economic Forum. As usual it created little echo in the western media...

'The pandemic has exacerbated the problems and inbalances that built up in the world before. There is every reason to believe that differences are likely to grow stronger. These trends may appear practically in all areas. Needless to say, there are no direct parallels in history. However, some experts - and I respect their opinions - compare the current situation to the 1930s. Once can agree or disagree, but certain analogies are still suggested by many parameters, including the comprehensive, systemic nature of the challenges and potential threats.

We are seeing a crisis of the previous models and instruments of economic development. Social stratification is growing stronger both globally and in individual countries. This in turn is causing today a sharp polarisation of public views, provoking the growth of populism, right-and-left-wing radicalisation and other extremes, and the exacerbation of domestic political processes, including in the leading countries.

All this is inevitably affecting the nature of international relations and is not making them more stable or predictable. International institutions are becoming weaker, regional conflicts are emerging one after another, and the system of global security is deteriorating. Klaus Schwab has mentioned the conversation I had yesterday with the US President on extending the New START [nuclear treaty]. This is without a doubt, a step in the right direction. Nevertheless, the differences are leading to a downward spiral. As you are aware, the inability and unwillingness to find substantive solutions to problems like this in the 20th century led to the WWII catastrophe..."
