Democratic Fascists Prepare to Drop the Hammer

https://www.blackagendareport.com/democratic-fascists-prepare-drop-hammer

"The US corporate ruling class finally has its 'Reichstag fire' to justify suspension of constitutional liberties under cover of 'national emergency.' There is, of course, no imminent threat to the US state and its structures. Although corporate media claim that Donald Trump's antics in the White House have necessitated curtailment of free speech rights, it was clear to us at Black Agenda Report four years ago that the corporate Democrats were preparing to muzzle dissent. Democrats are determined to snuff out freedom of speech and assembly to protect the corporate ruling order..."

And as is frequently the case with Canada - 'Monkey see - monkey do' and our own 'democratic fascists' and their deluded useful 'progressive' idiots are preparing to welcome a similar 'friendly fascist' regimen...

Social media companies should face new legal duty to 'act responsibly' expert panel finds

https://www.nationalobserver.com/2021/01/27/news/social-media-companies-...

"Social media companies can't be trusted to mediate themselves, so it falls to the government to enforce new restrictions to protect Canadians from harmful content online, according to a report currently under review by the federal heritage minister..."

Yes. It can happen here. And it's already started. Follow the leader. All hail Uncle Joe!

Tulsi Gabbard Warns Against the New 'Domestic Terrorism' Laws

"The January 6 attack on the US Capitol shocked the nation. Now, as so often occurs in the wake of tragedy, some Washington politicians are using the opportunity to push for an expansion of their power - hoping Americans are too shell-shocked to object. Former Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, a progressive Democrat, called the push 'so dangerous'....

There is simply no need to expand the government's police powers. According to the New York University's law school. 'existing statutes have long provided substantial authority for the federal government to investigate and prosecute acts of domestic terrorism..."

On that subject - and perhaps this is the wrong thead, but I'd just as soon avoid proliferation to the extent possible – I've been baffled by the coverage of the fact the leader of the Proud Boys is an FBI asset. Since the FBI sort of investigated Trump and therefore Comey was rehabilitated and we're supposed to think the FBI's a left-wing guardian of freedom and justice now, I've seen lots of Democratic-leaning types talk about this as some kind of victory that proves the foolishness of the Proud Boys, who are all definitely going to prison, real soon now. Nobody's really asked about the significance of the fact the FBI has been running a white supremacist terrorist group for eight years, and it stormed the Capitol while under FBI control. And funnily enough, immediately after that happened, the FBI came out asking for more power. Surely they can be trusted with it, right? One of these days they'll stand for liberty and justice for all.

Any group in Canada that is opposed to our current form of government and is active in organizing demonstrations should expect at least one if not numerous agent provocateurs. Hell sometimes they even run the show. I think they share this trait with US authorities.

That story is nuts. It is one thing to keep tabs on groups that might be considered dangerous but it is crazy that the snake can eat its own tail like this with such impunity.

"Joe Biden has been inaugurated as 46th president of the United States and several of his cabinet appointees confirmed by the Senate. What have we learned from the senate confirmation hearings and from his latest executive actions, regarding both his domestic and foreign policy?

Americans are working for $2000 stimulus checks that have been knocked down to $1400, a minimum wage of $15/hour that has been pushed to 2025 and still no healthcare in sight. Some sanctions suspended on Yemen but will they be enough? Biden continues Trump's illegal occupation of Iraq and Syria while appointing Robert Malley, lead negotiator of the JCPOA as Iran envoy."

JKR:   Totally cool if you don't want to see news sources that disgust you.   Just scroll on by.   I do that all the time here too.

Babblers:  Here's an article I found somewhat curious, advocating for benign neglect as the best approach to dealing with Trumpism.  It makes the obvious parallel between the War on Terror in the Bush years to the new push for domestic terrorism laws by mainstream media and the Democrats.

https://responsiblestatecraft.org/2021/01/21/a-new-war-on-terror-would-t...

"A major reason for the increase in terrorism has been the chaos unleashed by American regime change wars. But we cannot not ignore the psychological dimension. In the aftermath of 9/11, Bush talked of terrorism as a global struggle, on par with the fights against communism and Nazism. While careful to explicitly say the U.S. was not at war with Islam itself, such his words rang hollow in the face of daily images of the U.S. killing Muslims abroad.

According to the American president himself, Osama bin Laden and his associates were not a ragtag bunch of criminals hiding in a remote part of the world; they were representatives of a broader struggle, the last ideology remaining at the end of history with the ability to challenge the world’s sole superpower.

This propaganda gift helped Islamic fundamentalism become a romantic ideal with appeal to young Muslims across the world.

A war on domestic terrorism would have a more local focus of course. While fighting QAnon and other American extremists won’t require foreign invasions, the struggle can still have pernicious consequences.

The Program on Extremism at George Washington University calls for expanding terrorism statutes to cover home grown ideologies in order to “bring moral equivalency” between foreign and domestic violent extremists. In other words, the hope is to elevate white supremacists and others in the same way we have Islamists."

...

"While the individuals who stormed the Capitol seemed to have little in common ideologically besides their devotion to Trump, they are united by a sense of grievance against elites. White nationalists hate the federal government for its racial policies and feel they are fighting a culture war, Trumpist conservatives feel put upon and condescended to, and QAnon thinks it’s at war with a cabal of satanic pedophiles.

Some of these views overlap with attitudes expressed by many in the law enforcement community and even members of Congress. Just like the “war on terror” put conservative Muslims who posed no danger to the west under suspicion, similar policies domestically could potentially wreak havoc on the civil liberties of even more Americans, perhaps in the tens of millions. Bin Laden and other extremists came to represent “true Islam” in the minds of many Muslims after 9/11. In America, “true conservatism” may come to be associated with the most virulent resistance to liberal elites and the government. While censorship can certainly work to purge some ideas from public life, the effect of a wholesale effort to do so would likely inflame tribal passions beyond what we have already seen in recent decades."
