Biden calls Democrats, urges big COVID-19 relief bill

President Biden urged Senate Democrats in a call Tuesday to “go big” and move quickly on a COVID-19 relief bill, signaling that he is rejecting a $618 billion proposal sponsored by 10 GOP senators as “too small” even though he is open to some of their ideas.

“It was clear,” said Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) after the call. “Go big and be prompt because the American public is really hurting and really needs this.”

Biden told Democrats that his clear preference is for Congress to pass a $1.9 trillion package, despite concerns voiced by Republicans about the impact on the deficit.

What Ulysses Grant Can Teach Joe Biden About Putting Down Violent Insurrections

Overwhelming force was needed to end racist terrorism throughout the South. But a failure to keep up the pressure meant the victory was short-lived.

Casey Michel is an investigative journalist based in New York.

The deadly siege of the Capitol in Washington, which sought to overturn a legitimate election by targeting lawmakers with assassination, was not the first attempted insurrection in American history.

During Reconstruction, a raft of attempted insurrections flared up across the former Confederacy. Violent storms of white supremacists rocked swaths of the South, all aimed at undoing the Union’s victory during the Civil War, as well as the civil rights gains made thereafter. Racial equality, civil rights protections, basic recognition of democratic outcomes — all were targets of rampaging white terrorists, using violence to launch themselves to power once more. Numbers are hazy, but dozens perished as a direct result of insurrection, part of the thousands of victims of white supremacist political violence during the era.

“What occurred in the South in the late 1860s and the 1870s was at a scope and scale of violence and resistance that was not even remotely similar to what we saw [in Washington],” Mark Pitcavage, a historian and senior research fellow at the Anti-Defamation League, told me. The scale of violence “was so big that there are some people who say it was a low-intensity conflict. I don’t know if I want to go all the way there, but parts of it weren’t too far off from that.”

However, the echoes of that Reconstruction-era violence — led by both white marauders (cloaked as the Ku Klux Klan and other terrorist groups) and white supremacist Democratic officials bent on reclaiming power from Republicans — were impossible to escape in Washington in early January when the rioters paraded Confederate flags through the halls of the Capitol and chanted threats to hang the vice president. Though largely overlooked in mainstream American history, these insurrections — in Louisiana, in South Carolina, in Mississippi, in North Carolina — attempted to install terrorist-backed regimes in multiple post-Confederacy states. Their longevity was echoed as well in the warning last week from the Department of Homeland Security, which said for the first time publicly that the country faced a rising threat from “violent domestic extremists” who sympathized with the Capitol attack and the false narrative, stoked by former President Donald Trump, that the election was rigged.

“We have to realize that this is a powerful strand in the American experience. It’s always been here, the resistance to actual democracy,” Eric Foner, a historian at Columbia University who specializes on Reconstruction, told me. “We pride ourselves on being a democracy, but there’s actually a long tradition of people who don’t think that, who are unwilling to accept the rights of African-Americans to be citizens, the right of elections to overturn governments in power. In other words, we should realize the fragility of democratic culture.”

Haiphong: Joe Biden is a White Supremacist War Hawk Too

https://www.blackagendareport.com/joe-biden-white-supremacist-war-hawk-too

"The white hooligans who invaded Capitol Hill on January 6th set the stage for the US ruling class to reinvigorate its most prized political narrative: American exceptionalism. Trump committed the most egregious crime of all in the eyes of the empire by encouraging his most loyal supporters to desecrate what one police-officer on the scene called 'the most sacredest place.'

His closing act paved an even smoother road for the incoming Biden administration to quickly militarize Washington DC and normalize a period of sustained crisis vis-a-vis cosmetic changes to the leadership of the empire. But as neoliberal elements of the ruling class breathe a sigh of relief, the struggle against the Biden administration's imperial criminality will face immense challenges in the coming period..."

I think there are two things going on with (some of) the right's shift on Afghanistan.

  1. Matt Taibbi has noted when he was covering Trump's campaign that he would bring out his anti-forever war schtick selectively in very specific rallies where there would be working class military supporters. This isn't Vietnam where the war has impacted Americans widely across class lines and regions. There is a pretty specific pool to draw from and they are surely getting sick of being sent to Afghanistan. The propaganda in the leadup of the Iraq war was so poor that it disillusioned anyone with an internet connection on what US policy in the Middle East was actually about and even rightwingers don't like being sent to the Middle East and Central Asia to make Haliburton and Dick Cheney a bunch of cash. By not keeping his promise on Afghanistan, Obama made someone like Trump a lot more appealing to those voters.
  2. A peace with the Taliban that includes them being under the influence of Pakistan and Saudi Arabia isn't a terrible outcome for some US imperialists. It's really just back to status quo before the neoconservatives wanted to crack everything open and reshape the region. It could just make sense for many on the right who want to move on from the neoconservative project. Which makes a certain amount of sense since a lot of those neonconservatives: Bush, Cheney, Frum etc. all supported Clinton and Biden.

"It appears that Marc E Elias is back. The Perkins Coie lawyer was the focus of stories related to the Steele Dossier and the long denial of the Clinton campaign that it actually funded investigation. Despite such false statements by the campaign before the election, the money was found to have been paid out as a legal expense through Elias and counsel for the campaign.

Elias was also reportedly present when this funding was denied to the media and to Congress. The Biden campaign enlisted Elias to lead efforts in election challenges despite that history. He is now making a curious argument in New York for a Democratic lawyer: he is alleging that thousands of votes may have been switched or changed by the Dominion voting machines....I am less surprised by the Elias challenge to the Dominion voting systems than I am that he remains one of the leading lawyers entrusted by Biden and the Democratic party after the Steele dossier scandal."

This administration is making it very clear that they rule the world. The US remains among the few countries to not recognize the current legal name of Myanmar. This was highlighted after the latest coup took place on Monday, when President Joe Biden said in a statement, “The United States removed sanctions on Burma over the past decade based on progress toward democracy. The reversal of that progress will necessitate an immediate review of our sanction laws.” He has now imposed crushing sanctions on the economy that will do what sanctions are doing in Venezuela, Iran, Syria etc etc;  i.e. cause suffering amongst the poorest people in the country.

Whatever one thinks about how these children are handled once they’re taken into custody — and there are valid debates about both the speed and efficacy of that process — it bears little resemblance to what happened under Trump. They are not being held behind chain-link fences at a Border Patrol station because of a policy that requires them to be separated from their parents.
