Unbreakable China? (and vid)

"We've all heard the adage that the Chinese word for 'crisis' is composed of two characters, signifying danger and opportunity. While the story itself appears to be a misconception, it hasn't stopped Beijing from pursuing this exact strategy, seeking silver and even gold linings in every cloud.

Having confidently repelled the COVID-19 downturn, China is set to be the only major economy to register growth this year - much to the envy of its rival America. If Donald Trump hasn't managed to stop China, can Joe Biden do it? To discuss this, Oksana is joined by Martin Jacques, former Senior Fellow at the Department of Politics and International Studies at Cambridge University and author of When China Ruled the World."

'...The West has dominated the world for roughly 200 years. The West is extremely bad at understanding other cultures and other kinds of societies, precisely because it believes that everyone should be motoring in a Western direction - so it doesn't really feel the need to understand other cultures. This is one of the great problems the West is facing now..."

The number of Uyghurs has tripled - the US calls it a genocide - propaganda fails to explain it.

"After being  bashed with 24/7 'Trump is bad' news we are now punished with 24/7 'Biden is great' news. Actions which were an outrage when taken under Trump are now sold as rational endeavors when argued for by Biden acolytes.

Consider the New York Times piece that now justifies a last minute action the former Secretary of State Mike Pompous took when he falsely declared that the Chinese development of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region is a 'genocide'. Uh oh - the 'good Biden' endorses something 'bad Trump has done. Some mumble is needed to explain that!"

Why do these Uyghur witnesses' stories constantly change?

https://t.co/zZ8xdMQUCf?amp=1

"Two months ago we documented astonishing changes over time in the testimony of a Uyghur woman who claimed to have been incarcerated in China. The changes in her story came after Sayragul Sautbay had fallen into the hands of a propaganda group. A similar change can be observed in the testimony of another Uyghur woman who currently makes the rounds through the media.

Tursunay Ziawudun, a Uyghur woman who last year moved to the US now claims to have observed mass rape in Chinese detention camps. Like the Swedish organization which handled Sautbay, the US based Uyghur Human Rights project which handled Ziawudun is part of the infamous World Uyghur Congress..."

There are over 50 ethnic minorities living in China, including the Hui who are also Muslim. Is the targeting of the Uyghur people related to an independence movement, much like the Tibetans or say the Kurds in Iraq and Turkey? Although the majority Han people are more entitled and powerful than the rest of the population, there are many groups to target for discrimination and oppression if it was a racist thing. I find it a bit confusing.

A simplistic view would be that some of this minority are separatists but they are also religious zealots. They have not bombed mail boxes they have bombed city streets and killed many people. The Chinese admit to having detention camps for people they are trying to reeducate because they are committing acts of violence against their fellow citizens. The Uyghur's like all ethnic minorities were excepted from the one child policy so the Chinese say that is proof they can't be genocidal. On the other hand they do offer all the women birth control and other health services and the birth rate is going down.

In the meantime in Canada our government has been in breach of a Human Rights Tribunal ruling for over five years and it says they are killing First Nations children by their discriminatory practices. Where the fuck are the Conservative and the NDP in demanding that this genocide in our own country be stopped?

The US military calls this information warfare 'the firehose of falsehoods,' and we are all being drenched with these lies..."

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to matter to the imperial cheerleaders who seem immune to fact and  will continue to support an  establishment narrative no matter how dodgy as long as the establishment continues to make it. I've seen the same process play out over and over again and there seems little learning -  whether it's Libya, Ukraine, Syria, Russiagate or 'Chinese genocide' the 'fans' always advance the masters narratives.

It isn't necessary to demonize China and this isn't news. Of course the US isn't going to allow any other power on Earth to equal its own if it can prevent it by any means including atomic/nuclear bombs. They didn't built the biggest military in the world for nothing. They aren't going to give up their economic dominance willingly.

The richest most powerful people in the world are multi-state. Like old royalty their connections transcend boundries. They are citizens of the world with multiple homes on every continent and their wealth scattered so it can never be lost.

Much as I dislike American dominance I think Chinese dominance would be worse.

But do we know?  We are tied to media, that any chance demonizes Chinese government?   I wish I knew that answer, but having watched cultural videos here and there, the pronunciation Western media likes to make of China has only scant worth in some ways.

I live in an apartment overlooking a main street in Toronto.   Last Saturday, in -16 degree weather, there was a street protest against the CCP visible from my front window.   About 25 people (all masked).   I took a phamphlet, which advertised a website, endccp.com.   It had quotes from Ronald Reagan and Mike Pompeo on it.

The National Post has been nonstop with the anti-China agitprop lately, they may as well give Terry Glavin the front page every other day.   I see ads for the Epoch Times on youtube constantly.   I think the time for abstract debates has past, progressives need to find a way to de-escalate.

https://www.legion.org/landingzone/251823/natos-pacific-plans

"A group of experts empaneled by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has issued a report that lays the groundwork for the alliance’s most profound strategic shift since the end of the Cold War.

Specifically, NATO’s wisemen are calling on the alliance to “devote much more time, political resources and action to the security challenges posed by China,” which they label “a full-spectrum systemic rival.” In short, China’s actions and ambitions are forcing the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to follow America’s pivot to the Pacific. This is welcome news, as Washington needs all the help it can get containing the Beijing behemoth."   ...

"Britain has conducted freedom-of-navigation ops in the South China Sea, and her majesty’s newest aircraft carrier is headed to the Pacific for its maiden deployment.  Canadian warships are routinely sailing through the Taiwan Strait." ...

"Whether those steps force China to change its behavior, help contain China, or carry the alliance into direct confrontation with China, one thing is certain: In looking east, NATO is not looking for a fight. Rather, the alliance is reacting to a growing threat."

Steve, we're in a part of Iraq that's not controlled by Baghdad, and yet, it is part of Iraq and the people here overwhelmingly say they want a war. They're fed up with a despised Saddam Hussein, and everybody I speak with here, be it a mother, be it children, government leaders, are in favor of some kind of regime change. They view a US invasion as a sign of hope that perhaps the man they call `a tyrant,' the man that they say committed genocide against the Kurdish people, that he can be overthrown, and the leaders here are talking about installing democracy after this possible overthrow.

This is as good a short summary as I have read. The Chinese government banned them as a cult and forcefully stopped people from practicing it because they thought its ideas were dangerous to a civil society. In the West they are an example of CCP oppression. They are a racist scorch so I will highlight the last part of the quote.

"races come from different gods, mixed-race people are spiritually incomplete, and communism was created by aliens, given to Europeans, and intentionally spread to China to separate it from Heaven."

Falun Gong, the Scientology of China

Epoch Media Group is closely tied with Falun Gong, also known by the name Falun Dafa. They’re a religious group built in the early 90s around a Qigong-like practice who claim to center their beliefs around the principles of “truthfulness, compassion, and forbearance.” In reality, none of these are at their core, and Falun Gong instead has all the classic markings of a cult.

Megalomaniac leader? Check. The group’s founder Li Hongzhi, known as Master Li, claims to be able to levitate and followers are taught he can read their thoughts. Though it’s hard to tell his exact corporate role in Epoch, he’s promoted the paper as “our news” and his views on politics clearly influence it heavily.

Isolate compound? Check. They operate a 430-acre facility called Dragon Springs in rural New York, complete with hundreds of permanent residents, schools, and high-dollar performance facilities. They keep a full staff of security on deck 24/7 and steer media and onlookers far away. The place is reminiscent of Scientology’s “Gold Base,” but with the visual stylings of Chinese paganism rather than science fiction. We’ll come back to this one.

Like many cults, Falun Gong places a heavy emphasis on physical health and views its practices as an alternative to medical treatment, sometimes even pitching a cure to cancer. They rail against science, medicine, Western philosophy, and above all else, communism. This stems very largely from their segregationist views; Master Li teaches that races come from different gods, that mixed-race people are spiritually incomplete, and that communism was created by aliens, given to Europeans, and intentionally spread to China to separate it from Heaven.

laine lowe laine lowe's picture

I was wondering if Falun Gong was as influencial and beloved by the western "humanitarian" crusaders as in the past. I also find it depressing that US and western entitlement is so entrenched and strong that huge powerhouses out of their orbit can not do right for wrong. Whether it was the collapse of the Berlin wall and devolution of the Soviet State system or the opening up and active particpation of China in the global capitalist economy, there just needs to be another pretext for keeping their power in check. Japan is no longer the economic giant it was back in the 70s or 80s but I wonder if they were also treated as a threat and discriminated to the same degree. Germany of course rebounded post WWII to be one of the strongest Eurpean powers but I guesss being part of the same western culture buys one a wide bearth.

Given the knee jerk reaction of the NDP to try and get a gotcha moment on the Liberals here are two articles that set out the side of the story that they should have been listening to. The first one is from Grayzone and breaks down where the US politicians got their genocide cry from. Imagine, an antisemitic Christian who believes God has told him to fight the communists is the primary source. Mind boggling ineptitude by both the NDP and Greens.

While Zenz’s employers describe him as “one of the world’s leading scholars on People’s Republic of China government policies towards the country’s western regions of Tibet and Xinjiang,” he is, in fact, a far-right Christian fundamentalist who has said he is “led by God” against China’s government, deplores homosexuality and gender equality, and has taught exclusively in evangelical theological institutions.

Lyle Goldstein, a China specialist and research professor in the Strategic and Operational Research Department of the Naval War College, told The Grayzone that Zenz’s labeling of the Chinese approach to the Uyghurs as “demographic genocide” is “ridiculous to the point of being insulting to those who lost relatives in the Holocaust.”

Goldstein said the Chinese approach to Xinjiang “is a more repressive posture than we would like, but it sure isn’t genocide.”

Moreover, a careful review of Zenz’s research shows that his assertion of genocide is contradicted by flagrant data abuse, fraudulent claims, cherry-picking of source material, and propagandistic misrepresentations.

If a government fails to delivers for its citizens while its rival succeeds, what better way to divert attention from its failure and recover its credibility than to create a dark legend to vilify its successful rival and a golden legend to celebrate itself?  Certain players in the United States and Canada—Biden, Pompeo, the Canadian parliament, and the mass news media—have chosen to follow this course, and are doing so by carelessly echoing accusations of genocide made by an anti-Communist fanatic with an ideological ax to grind. The practice debases the very concept of genocide. Sadly, it is hardly new.

From my window, I can see Canada’s National Holocaust Monument. A short distance away is the site of the as-yet-completed Memorial to the Victims of Communism. Canada commemorates the genocide of the Jews (carried out in another land by another people) but does not commemorate the Canadian Holocaust, carried out on its own territory by its own people. At the same time, it memorializes the Nazis, fascists, and their supporters—these were the victims of communism—who perpetrated the Holocaust Canadians profess to abhor.

Well that sure is interesting, Kropotkin. Between this and Amnesty International withdrawing Navalny's status as a prisoner of conscience, it becomes apparent that few do any deep background research on ANYTHING. It's like monitoring what is happening on Twitter constitutes research these days. "That sound you hear is Asian women collectively screaming at the claim that the Atlanta spas mass-murder was 'not racially motivated' but that Asian women were targeted because the subject has a sex addiction and the locations 'were a temptation he wanted to elininate."

The guy tells us that China has covered up the source of the covid virus and thus declared China to be THE GREATEST EVIL OF OUR TIME.' One wonders how that 'unclear motive' got planted into the dude's mind..."

CBC Radio "As It Happens" had a good interview with an Asian-American congress person who made it clear that Asian women have often and continue to be sexualized, which is also a very racist response to who they are as individuals. But that is the general gist of what the gunman claimed as his motivation - he was trying to stop his sexual compulsion. It's sickening to think that the authorities are blind or unwilling to see how freaking racist and mysogynist the motivations of this perpertrator of mass slaughter were. The woman interviewed said it well, and to paraphrase "So an entitled white young man decides he's having a crappy day and that massage workers make him feel worse, goes out and attacks these people who he usually turns to for to help him feel better." It really is sickening.
