All the people who sued him at one time were his blind devotees. I never understood how people get sucked in by guys like him until I saw Bill Vander Zalm work a small crowd. I think that either you keep underestimating his conman abilities or overestimating the society that includes the ethos, "never give a sucker an even break."

Since many people made videos of the riot it is obvious to everyone outside of Trump's cult of personality that Trump is primarily responsible for the riot. Over 140 police officers were also injured in the riot, some very seriously. Even Mitch McConell has said that Trump is responsible for the riot. Trump even told his mob that he was going to lead them to the Capitol to get justice. Of course Trump lied about that too. Trump's mob had every reason th think Trump wanted to have them "stop the steal." So what would have happened if Trump's mob had been able to physically confront people like Mike Pence, Pelosi, Schumer, Romney, AOC, etc...? Could the certification of the election have gone ahead if Pence and other politicians had been held hostage, injured, or killed? What would have happened if many politicians had been injured or killed? Martial law? How would Trump have reacted if politicians like Pence, Pelosi, Shumer, Romney, AOZ, and many other Democratic politicians had been incapacitated or killed? Reportedly he was enjoying the whole thing.

Mobo2000

The Greenwald article is excellent, and this section addresses the questions in post 608:

"That protesters were found before and after the riot with weapons does not mean they intended to use them as part of the protest. For better or worse, the U.S. is a country where firearm possession is common and legal. And what we know for certain is that there is no evidence of anyone brandishing a gun in that building. That fact makes a pretty large dent in the attempt to characterize this as an “armed insurrection” rather than a riot.

Indeed, the most dramatic claims spread by the media to raise fear levels as high as possible and depict this as a violent insurrection have turned out to be unfounded or were affirmatively disproven." ...

Over and over, no evidence has emerged for the most melodramatic media claims — torn out Panic Buttons and plots to kill Vice President Mike Pence or Mitt Romney. What we know for certain, as The Washington Post noted this week, is that “Despite warnings of violent plots around Inauguration Day, only a smattering of right-wing protesters appeared at the nation’s statehouses.” That does not sound like an ongoing insurrection, to put it mildly.

All this matters because it inherently matters if the media is recklessly circulating falsehoods about the most inflammatory and significant news stories. As was true for their series of Russiagate debacles, even if each “mistake” standing alone can be dismissed as relatively insignificant or understandable, when they pile up — always in the same narrative direction — people rightly conclude the propaganda is deliberate and trust in journalism erodes further.

But in this case, this matters for reasons far more significant than corporate media’s attempt to salvage the last vestiges of their credibility. Washington, D.C. remains indefinitely militarized. The establishment wings of both parties are still exploiting the emotions surrounding the Capitol breach to justify a new domestic War on Terror. The FBI is on the prowl for dissidents on the right and the left, and online censorship in the name of combatting domestic terrorism continues to rise.

One can — and should — condemn the January 6 riot without inflating the threat it posed."

Deadly Donald Trump and 40 Years of Health Failures

Public policy and health in the Trump era

  • Published:February 10, 2021

This report by the Lancet Commission on Public Policy and Health in the Trump Era assesses the repercussions of President Donald Trump's health-related policies and examines the failures and social schisms that enabled his election. Trump exploited low and middle-income white people's anger over their deteriorating life prospects to mobilise racial animus and xenophobia and enlist their support for policies that benefit high-income people and corporations and threaten health. His signature legislative achievement, a trillion-dollar tax cut for corporations and high-income individuals, opened a budget hole that he used to justify cutting food subsidies and health care. His appeals to racism, nativism, and religious bigotry have emboldened white nationalists and vigilantes, and encouraged police violence and, at the end of his term in office, insurrection. He chose judges for US courts who are dismissive of affirmative action and reproductive, labour, civil, and voting rights; ordered the mass detention of immigrants in hazardous conditions; and promulgated regulations that reduce access to abortion and contraception in the USA and globally. Although his effort to repeal the Affordable Care Act failed, he weakened its coverage and increased the number of uninsured people by 2·3 million, even before the mass dislocation of the COVID-19 pandemic, and has accelerated the privatisation of government health programmes. Trump's hostility to environmental regulations has already worsened pollution—resulting in more than 22 000 extra deaths in 2019 alone—hastened global warming, and despoiled national monuments and lands sacred to Native people. Disdain for science and cuts to global health programmes and public health agencies have impeded the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, causing tens of thousands of unnecessary deaths, and imperil advances against HIV and other diseases. And Trump's bellicose trade, defence, and foreign policies have led to economic disruption and threaten an upswing in armed conflict.

What false claims were those? The fact remains that Hillary received almost 3 million more votes than Donald. Trump received just 46.1% of the vote while Clinton received 48.2% of the vote.

Here is an article that shows that in 2016 some Democrats were claiming the election results were not valid. Of course they did not storm the Capital Building to make the same point as the Trump supporters in 2020 were making. Nobody said they should be banned from Twitter for their claims either.

Congress made the election of Donald Trump official Friday, certifying the votes of the Electoral College in a formal joint session of Congress.

Some Democratic House members attempted to object to some states Electoral College votes to protest the election results. But their objections went nowhere because they were unable to gain the support of a senator, per the rules.

Despite protests, the final vote tally was:

  • Donald Trump: 304 electoral votes
  • Hillary Clinton: 227
  • Colin Powell: 3
  • Ohio Gov. John Kasich: 1
  • Former Rep. Ron Paul of Texas: 1
  • Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders: 1
  • Faith of Spotted Eagle: 1

Democrats objected 11 times, citing a variety of issues, including “Russian interference,” “massive voter suppression” and the “violation of the Voting Rights Act.”

Vice President Joe Biden, who sat in the chair and presided over the 41 minute-long process in the House chamber, attempted to speed through the objections. After the third objection and the third time Biden asked if a senator had signed on, Biden said, “it is over.”

But a handful of Democratic House members continued to object during specific states and tried to continue their speeches even after Biden gaveled them down and said debate is not allowed. After the states were counted, three citizens in the audience gallery stood up to demonstrate.

At one point, Rep. Maxine Watters, D-Calif., stood and asked for a senator to join them. Only four Democratic senators attended the ceremony.

I wouldn't argue that US elections are fair and transparent. I also would not dismiss out right either of the duopolies claims about their opponents fixing specific elections.  When you look back at 2017 it is easy to see where the Trumpites got the idea to use the process of inauguration to try and deny the outcome of the election.

Arguing over who stole a rigged election, where only money interests win big, is satire of the highest order.

I thought it was all Putin's fault. At least those were the baseless claims relentlessly trotted out by Democratic Party loyalists and their assorted mafias in the msm and intelligence apparatus. Until the cavalcade of lies became unsustainable and finally ran out of gas at the foot of a mountain of evidence to the contrary. Seems obvious to me the 2016 loss was entirely due to the manifest unpopularity of the chosen candidate. Hillary lost Hillary that election, just as Joe Biden (instead of Bernie Sanders) would have lost it again had it not been for janky Joe's election 'special sauce' nobody's supposed to mention.

Trump has said that the only way he can lose an election is through fraud so as long as he runs the Republicans will be making false claims of fraud. Trump also claimed that the Democrats rigged the 2016 election as he really won the popular vote in 2016 and that huge amounts of fraud in the 2016 election cost him the right to say he won more votes than Clinton. He even set up a commission that was unable to find evidence of fraud. Trump is completely detached from reality when it suits his interests even if detaching from reality is dangerous for society as a whole.

I agree completely which is why it drives me crazy to hear the same people in the US who decry such blatant bullshit claim that Juan Guaido is the leader of Venezuela. He has less fucking legitimacy from elections than Trump does but Biden is willing to steal the sovereign wealth of that nation based on a complete detachment from reality and it is not theoretically dangerous to a society it is literally killing thousands of people as we speak.

When do you expect the investigations into the BLM protests like the one in NYC in February to begin?
