As he is most of the time, Jonathan Chait is totally wrong in this article. He ludicrously defines Greenwald's political history as center left then far left, then something he can't define. This shows that he probably never read Greenwald at all until he started writing at The Guardian, since Chait is a journalistic dinosaur who only considers print genuine journalism. He is the most tired of old Clinton Democrats.
Anyway, contrary to Chait's false statements, Greenwald has never been even slightly on the left. He has always been a libertarian. Chait thinks he was left because he criticized GWB on civil libertarian grounds, and had some modest sympathy for the mistreatment of Bernie Sanders at the hands of the DNC (which Chait worships as the fount of all wisdom).

In the meantime the Democrats in Congress are attempting to make it even harder for third party candidates while claiming the bill is an enhancement of voting rights. I think I will believe the Green Party on the bill's true effects. I super highlighted the part I found the most offensive. This bill gives the DNC the authority to spend up to a $100,000 in an election battle when it is currently $5,000. I am sure this will not enhance the options for the nearly two thirds of US voters who are fed up with the two parties and want different choices.
The Green Party is calling attention to other problematic provisions in HR1, which will:
- Abolish the general election campaign block grants parties may access by winning at least 5% of the vote in the previous presidential election
- Replace those general election block grants (where candidates receive one lump sum for all campaign expenses) with matching funds through Election Day — a step backwards for public campaign finance reform. Qualifying for general election matching funds will depend on meeting the new primary matching funds criteria designed to squeeze out alternative parties and independent candidates
- Eliminate the limits on donations and expenditures candidates can receive and make
- Inflate the amount of money national party committees can give to candidates from $5000 to $100 million, an astonishing increase of 1999900%
“Instead of trying to fool American voters and eliminating minor party voices, the Green Party calls for real reforms to democratize elections,” said Ndege, listing:
- The Fair Representation Act, introduced in 2018 and 2019, which would establish multi-seat, proportional representation for Congress by ranked-choice voting

The passage of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 is not only a significant victory for U.S. President Joe Biden and the Democratic Party's razor-thin majority in Congress. The $1.9-trillion COVID-19 relief package includes the much-touted $1,400 cheques to most Americans, an extension of the $300 per week supplemental unemployment benefit, billions in support to struggling state and tribal governments, and more. There is also an adjustment to the child tax credit, which, on its surface, might appear to be just another tweak of our immensely complex tax code. In fact, the language tucked between pages 359-379 of the 628-page bill defines a profound shift in how we as a society confront poverty, much like the New Deal's creation of social security did for the elderly following the Great Depression.
This temporary child tax credit enhancement is expected to cut in half the number of children living in poverty in the U.S., especially helping children in communities of colour. The Center on Poverty and Social Policy at Columbia University predicted H.R. 1319 would lift almost 14 million Americans out of poverty, including 5.7 million children. This anti-poverty initiative, increasing cash payments to poor families with no strings attached, while only temporary, signals a commitment to a more European-style social democracy. All the pain and death suffered during the past year of the pandemic just might give way to a renewed sense of shared struggle.
"This piece of legislation is absolutely going to change the lives of tens of millions of people in this country," Stephanie Kelton, professor of economics and public policy at Stony Brook University and a former adviser to Senator Bernie Sanders said on the Democracy Now! news hour. "People for the first time are going to be able to pay all of the bills that they have, instead of trying to figure out which one to put off this month and how to try to catch up later."

That's a drop in the bucket compared to the benefits that they lost when he helped Republicans push through welfare "reform" in 1996, but I suppose giving back a tiny percentage of what you take from the poor is now social democracy in the United States. I'm sure that $250/child/month for the next few months will really wipe out child poverty, until Biden decides enough people have been vaccinated and the tax credit is a "disincentive to work". So JKR you do not think that the Republican party is going to run a MAGA candidate next time? I think it is inevitable. As the quote rightly points out we just don't know whether it will be Trump himself or someone else fronting the band.
