Sanctioning the crown prince, known as MBS, would have been "too complicated," according to two administration officials, and could have jeopardized US military interests in the kingdom. As a result, the administration did not even request the State Department to work up options for how to target MBS, one State Department official said. Another current administration official said sanctioning the crown prince was never a "viable option" given that it could upend important initiatives in the region.

One central reason: MBS has near complete control over all the country's levers of power. He is not only the crown prince, he is the deputy prime minister, defense minister, chairman of the Council of Economic and Development Affairs, chairman of the Council of Political and Security Affairs and the head of Aramco, the state-owned oil and natural gas company.

No. A lie from the beginning. There was never any intention to do anything serious. It was just a sop for the 'build back better' chumps. Like most politicians, lie as necessary to get elected. It's only the donor class that really matters.

Remember when it was forbidden to criticize Biden because Democrats needed to win first the White House, and then the Senate runoffs, without which they couldn't do anything? Now that they're still not doing anything, Manchin is the excuse. If Democrats pick up more Senate seats in 2022, there'll be another excuse. Just like there were excuses when Obama had 60 seats. "We need to win, so the Democratic Party has to be as Republican as possible! And when we win, we have to govern as Republicans, or else we'd lose and Republicans would govern as Republicans!"

In the grand scheme of things Trump supporters are less delusional in their belief that he should still be President than all of the US Congress who insist that a man who didn't even contest a Presidential election, ever, is the rightful "democratic" leader of Venezuela. I can't for the live of me figure out how the US population got to be so susceptible to believing fake news.

Margaret Kimberley: The Minimal Minimum Wage

https://www.blackagendareport.com/freedom-rider-minimal-minimum-wage

"...The federal minimum wage has been a paltry $7.25 per hour since 2009. In that year Barack Obama was president and the Democrats controlled both houses of Congress. That means they could have made it any amount they wanted, but it went from $6.55 to $7.25, a grand total of 70 cents.

We must keep this in mind as the drama of raising the minimum wage plays out in the Biden administration. House Democrats passed Joe Biden's $1.9 trillion stimulus bill, which does not include any provision to raise the minimum wage. The plan was to raise the meager sum to a less meager sum of $15 per hour, but by the year 2025.

Even these crumbs didn't make it into the bill. The last minute claim that the Senate parliamentarian  ruled against allowing the inclusion of minimum wage legislation should be taken as a joke or an insult depending upon one's mood. The obvious effort to skirt responsibility is a typical Democratic Party ploy meant to keep gullible rubes at bay with tortured explanations.

The machinations to avoid doing the right thing may be somewhat complicated, but the reasons behind the inaction are not. Simply put, most Democrats either don't want a minimum wage increase or are too afraid of bucking their party's donor class..."

Glen Ford: Joe Biden: The Expect Nothing Presidency

https://www.blackagendareport.com/joe-biden-expect-nothing-presidency

"Joe Biden's administration can be more aptly characterized as the 'expect nothing presidency.' A return to 'pre-Trump' politics in the United States reinforces Biden's assurance that 'nothing will fundamentally change' for his wealthy donor base. With this assurance, an increasingly uninspiring yet emboldened American exceptionalism has replaced any attempt to analyze the current situation from a historical materialist lens.

Biden's mere presence in the White House is assumed to have cleared the racist, demagogic stain of Trumpism from the United States. The liberal class has reveled in its perceived victory over despotism and political treachery. So shortsighted is this liberal class that it cannot (and wouldn't if it could) acknowledge the obvious contradictions between a presidency that claims to represent the mythical exceptionalism of the United States and the material conditions of the historical moment - conditions that led directly to Trump's rise in the first place.

Biden's brand of American exceptionalism, replete with 'diverse' cabinet members and hollow promises to restore the 'soul of the nation', has run up against the general crisis of the US imperialist order. The first month of Biden's project of restoration has only further exposed the depths of imperial decay..."

As he is most of the time, Jonathan Chait is totally wrong in this article. He ludicrously defines Greenwald's political history as center left then far left, then something he can't define. This shows that he probably never read Greenwald at all until he started writing at The Guardian, since Chait is a journalistic dinosaur who only considers print genuine journalism. He is the most tired of old Clinton Democrats.

Anyway, contrary to Chait's false statements, Greenwald has never been even slightly on the left. He has always been a libertarian. Chait thinks he was left because he criticized GWB on civil libertarian grounds, and had some modest sympathy for the mistreatment of Bernie Sanders at the hands of the DNC (which Chait worships as the fount of all wisdom).

What Chait does get right is that Greenwald has become unquestionably right wing since the 2016 campaign, becoming a best buddy of monsters like Tucker Carlson. I don't care for Greenwald's writing much these days, but if I had to choose, I'd rather read Greenwald than that asshole Chait.

In the meantime the Democrats in Congress are attempting to make it even harder for third party candidates while claiming the bill is an enhancement of voting rights. I think I will believe the Green Party on the bill's true effects. I super highlighted the part I found the most offensive. This bill gives the DNC the authority to spend up to a $100,000 in an election battle when it is currently $5,000. I am sure this will not enhance the options for the nearly two thirds of US voters who are fed up with the two parties and want different choices.

The Green Party is calling attention to other problematic provisions in HR1, which will:

  • Abolish the general election campaign block grants parties may access by winning at least 5% of the vote in the previous presidential election

  • Replace those general election block grants (where candidates receive one lump sum for all campaign expenses) with matching funds through Election Day — a step backwards for public campaign finance reform. Qualifying for general election matching funds will depend on meeting the new primary matching funds criteria designed to squeeze out alternative parties and independent candidates

  • Eliminate the limits on donations and expenditures candidates can receive and make

  • Inflate the amount of money national party committees can give to candidates from $5000 to $100 million, an astonishing increase of 1999900%

“Instead of trying to fool American voters and eliminating minor party voices, the Green Party calls for real reforms to democratize elections,” said Ndege, listing:

  • The Fair Representation Act, introduced in 2018 and 2019, which would establish multi-seat, proportional representation for Congress by ranked-choice voting

  • Individual state governments enacting RCV for their presidential general elections

  • Fully-public campaign finance for every federal, state and local office through the Clean Money/Clean Elections model

If HR1 is not amended, the Green Party will release an online, grassroots lobbying effort for communities to tell their representatives in Congress to vote “no” during the full House vote this week.

Top 6 Reasons Not to Give Biden Any New AUMF (Authorisation for Use of Military Force)

https://davidswanson.org/top-6-reasons-not-to-give-biden-any-new-aumf

"...Since 2001, the United States has been systematically destroying a region of the globe, bombing Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Libya, Somalia, Yemen and Syria, not to mention the Philippines and other countries scattered around the world. The US has 'special forces' operating in dozens of countries.

The people killed by the post-9-11 wars is likely around 6 million. Many times that have been injured, many times that indirectly killed or injured, many times that made homeless, and many times that traumatized. A huge percentage of the victims have been little children. Terrorist organizations and refugee crises have been generated at an amazing pace.

This death and destruction is a drop in the bucket compared to the lost opportunities to save people from starvation and illness and climate disasters. The financial cost of over $1 trillion each and every year for US militarism, has been and is a trade off. It could have done and could do a world of good. Otherwise, what was the point of getting a new Congress and President?..."

Duss’s choice to remain independent from the administration reflects the concerns of a vocal faction of dovish foreign policy thinkers, who are increasingly signalling their dissatisfaction with Biden’s initial moves in the Middle East. On issues ranging from re-entering the Iran deal to re-evaluating Washington’s relationship with regional allies like Israel and Saudi Arabia, many on the left now believe that Biden’s team risks falling short of expectations set during and after last year’s presidential election. After a brief honeymoon period, it is rapidly becoming clear to this cohort that its efforts are better spent pressuring Biden from the outside rather than working in lockstep with the White House on foreign policy.

Progressives on this board are on side with this as well. The US needs a new electoral system but it is in neither of the duopoly party's interests to look to any change. U.S. pandemic relief bill promises major reduction in child poverty; Amy Goodman and Denis Moynihan; rabble.ca; March 11, 2021;

https://rabble.ca/columnists/2021/03/us-pandemic-relief-bill-promises-major-reduction-child-poverty

The passage of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 is not only a significant victory for U.S. President Joe Biden and the Democratic Party's razor-thin majority in Congress. The $1.9-trillion COVID-19 relief package includes the much-touted $1,400 cheques to most Americans, an extension of the $300 per week supplemental unemployment benefit, billions in support to struggling state and tribal governments, and more. There is also an adjustment to the child tax credit, which, on its surface, might appear to be just another tweak of our immensely complex tax code. In fact, the language tucked between pages 359-379 of the 628-page bill defines a profound shift in how we as a society confront poverty, much like the New Deal's creation of social security did for the elderly following the Great Depression.

This temporary child tax credit enhancement is expected to cut in half the number of children living in poverty in the U.S., especially helping children in communities of colour. The Center on Poverty and Social Policy at Columbia University predicted H.R. 1319 would lift almost 14 million Americans out of poverty, including 5.7 million children. This anti-poverty initiative, increasing cash payments to poor families with no strings attached, while only temporary, signals a commitment to a more European-style social democracy. All the pain and death suffered during the past year of the pandemic just might give way to a renewed sense of shared struggle.

"This piece of legislation is absolutely going to change the lives of tens of millions of people in this country," Stephanie Kelton, professor of economics and public policy at Stony Brook University and a former adviser to Senator Bernie Sanders said on the Democracy Now! news hour. "People for the first time are going to be able to pay all of the bills that they have, instead of trying to figure out which one to put off this month and how to try to catch up later."

Well, let's see. FDR created Social Security (which Biden later voted to cut and privatize), the Public Works Administration, the Civilian Conservation Corps, Glass-Steagal, FDIC, the Works Progress Administration, the National Labor Relations Board, and adopted the hands-off Good Neighbor Policy towards Latin America. Biden's giving parents a tax cut. A refundable one, yes, which will temporarily give the poorest parents $250/month (be clear about that: not $3000/month, but $3000/year). That's a drop in the bucket compared to the benefits that they lost when he helped Republicans push through welfare "reform" in 1996, but I suppose giving back a tiny percentage of what you take from the poor is now social democracy in the United States. I'm sure that $250/child/month for the next few months will really wipe out child poverty, until Biden decides enough people have been vaccinated and the tax credit is a "disincentive to work". All hail the new Roosevelt!

Trump's reich will return to power! Just like Hitler's reich, Trump's reich will last for at least 1,000 years!!  Sieg heil!!!

So JKR you do not think that the Republican party is going to run a MAGA candidate next time? I think it is inevitable. As the quote rightly points out we just don't know whether it will be Trump himself or someone else fronting the band.

From the same article:

"...The engine of our emerging dystopia is income inequality, which is growing. This bill does nothing to address this cancer. The bottom 50% of households in 2019 accounted for only 1% of the nation's total wealth. The top 10% accounted for 76%. And this was before the pandemic accelerated income disparity.

More than 18 million Americans depend on unemployment benefits, as businesses contract and close. Nearly 81 Americans struggle to meet basic household expenses, 22 million lack food and 11 million say they cannot make their next house payment.

Only deep structural reforms accompanied by New Deal-type legislation can save us, but such changes are an anathema to the corporate state and the Biden administration. History has amply demonstrated what happens when income disparities of this magnitude afflict a country. We will be no exception. Lacking a strong left [sound familiar Canucklhead?] the United States will in desperation embrace authoritarianism, if not proto-fascism. This will, I fear, be Biden and the Democratic Party's real legacy."
