Reports of Anti-Asian Hate Crimes Are Surging in Canada (and vid)

https://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/report-of-anti-asian-hate-crimes-are-surgi...

"Research shows that there has been a significant increase of hate crimes against Asian-Canadians since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, with major cities seeing crime rates that are six and seven hundred percent higher than previous years.

According to Project 1907, Canada has a higher number of reported anti-Asian hate crime incidents per Asian capita compared to the United States.

'As members of the impacted communities, we feel the pain,' said Teresa Woo-Paw, chair of the Canadian Race Relations Foundation. 'Many of the people who are members of the impacted community also think whether we might next, whether our children will be next, so that level of anxiety, that fear has been increasing - it's real."

China's economy is growing faster now than before the coronavirus pandemic

As other major nations and geopolitical competitors, from the US to Europe to India to Japan, struggle to beat back a winter wave, China's containment  success has buoyed its economy and the ruling Communist Party's claims to global leadership in a post-pandemic world...."

I never understand why other peoples straw men don't align with reality. China is not a state controlled economy it is a mixed economy. Its government however does wield state control over capital. On the ground in Chinese cities there is every type of business ownership including interesting hybrids like Huawei which is worker owned but controlled by its executive.

Huawei is an independent, privately-held company. We are not owned or controlled by, nor affiliated with the government, or any other 3rd party corporation.

In fact, Huawei is owned by our employees through an Employee Stock Ownership Program (ESOP) that has been in place since the beginning. No one can own a share without working at Huawei, and as of 2018 there were 96,768 shareholding employees. Our founder, Ren Zhengfei, owns a 1.14% stake in the company.

Shares confer voting rights. Shareholding employees elect members to form a Representatives' Commission, getting one vote for each share held. Then the Commission elects the company’s Board of Directors and Supervisory Board. At the last election in January 2019, 86,514 shareholding employees voted to elect 115 representatives at 416 polling stations around the world.

Employee-ownership is instrumental to our rapid growth. Over the years, it has offered an incentive to our loyal employees and helped us attract talented people. Unlike many publicly-owned companies, Huawei’s decisions are not based on the need for quarterly returns and annual dividends.

I first heard of the Huawei model of ownership when I was in Japan in the late 80s.

Off on a tangent but remember when West Jet first started? They ran an ad campaign where different employees were briefly highlighted (flight attendant, pilot, ticket sales, etc) who stated their position and then added, "and I'm an owner too!" I also recall that none of their employees were unionized. Is either of these recollections true? And if so, when did it change and why?

That was very true except unlike with Huawei the employees were given a minuscule amount of the total shares and never ended up holding any major part of the company and were never seen as a workers syndicate. It was a marketing ploy and a way to try and stop unions.

But is you want to be nostalgic I still miss our best airline Canadian Airlines. The people of Canada gave some business people control of public assets for under market value and they decided their best business model was to drive their competition out of business by undercutting their routes until they bled to death.

The transportation business is certainly one that has been dismal since it became obvious that it was no longer considered a public good (same with telecommunications).

Your memory is correct. WestJet pilots have been unionized for a couple of years now. All bad things must come to an end.

Not sure I follow the "straw man" comment - I think you and I agree that China is in no way, shape or form a centrally-planned economy. Which is why I find it amusing that those on the far left defend it so passionately - it's the ultimate testimony to the triumph of global capitalism and free markets when even so-called "communist" countries have thoroughly capitalist economies.

I did not know about Huawei's ownership structure - good to know. That said, if you believe the statement that they are not "controlled by, nor affiliated with the government", I have a bridge for sale.

'Independent' Report Claiming Uyghur Genocide Brought to You by Sham University and Neocon Ideologues Lobbying to 'Punish" China

http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/56471.htm

Grayzone - ..."Cotler is an ardent supporter of Israeli apartheid and longtime adviser to Moshe Ya'alon, former Israeli defense minister and chief of staff of the Israeli military. Cotler has played a significant role in the Canadian government's efforts to equate criticism of Israel with anti-Semitism and smear the non-violent BDS movement for Palestinian rights. Cotler has long harbored hostile sentiments towards China.

In its mission statement, the Wallenberg Centre outlines its right-wing, Western imperial outlook in detail, explicitly identifying China, Venezuela, Iran and Russia as countries that it is pushing to 'combat' with sanctions. The Wallenberg Centre has become a haven for anti-China hawks, including Senior Fellow David Kilgour and David Matas, senior legal counsel for B'nai Brith Canada, a right-wing organization that describes itself as dedicated to 'Israel advocacy'. Kilgour and Matas have extensive ties to the far-right, anti-China cult Falun Gong.

Any critical probe of the reams of reports on Xinjiang and the hawkish institutions that publish them will quickly reveal a shabby propaganda campaign dressed up as academic inquiry. Western media's refusal to look beneath the surface of Washington's information war against China only highlights its central role in the operation..."

I am always struck at how the symbolism is the same for all these US backed groups. Strangely they look like they would fit right in with a Trump demonstration but are cheered on by the Democrats as well. Work with partners of the international community to demand the closure of the concentration camps and unfettered access to the region.

If only they would call for the same rights for the people caged in Gaza and the West Bank. Especially since I have seen lots of videos on line of people in Xinjiang. There are no border patrols with Uzi's and checkpoints stopping anyone from entering or leaving the region. The people of Xinjiang have electricity, water and and a thriving modern economy. Palestinians have what? I do not think that the Chinese state is more brutal in its treatment of suspected Islamic terrorist than the IDF or Mossad let alone the US with its rendition sights around the globe.

Or, it's the problem of human rights becoming a tool of geopolitical power politics. I guess we could all pretend otherwise and pat ourselves on the back for being "pure" and "unbiased" when we discuss them on the internet.

And this whole critical approach to looking at where these claims are coming from is something that should be completely absent from any discussion on human rights abuses. The idea that Adrian Zenz is not a reliable source! The man has done nothing but solid reality based research:

The reality is that actions taken against China were already planned and a narrative was used to justify them.

The Real Danger of the Pentagon's New Indo-Pacific Plan

https://www.counterpunch.org/2021/03/29/the-real-danger-of-the-pentagons...

"The Pentagon recently asked Congress for an astronomical $27 billion budget increase to support a massive military buildup in Asia as part of its new Indo-Pacific plan, which calls for a substantially more aggressive military stance against China.

With the US already ranking first in military spending worldwide holding more than 290 military bases in the Asia-Pacific region alone, the aggressive buildup is being proposed at the most financially precarious moment in US history. According to the Congressional Budget Office report released this month, federal debt is projected to reach 102% of GDP by the end of 2021 before surpassing its historical high of 107% in 2031 and going on to nearly double to 2012% by 2051.

According to Doug Bandow 'Uncle Sam is headed toward insolvency.' How can the Biden administration sell such an expensive foreign policy proposal to the American public in these economically depressed times? By publicly stoking moral outrage and militarism. kropotkin1951

The article clearly answers the question, "why would our colonial government get involved." The war drums are being pounded and parliament is voting in favour of motions about a genocide that is yet another NATO/5Eyes propaganda operation. Tell the people of Libya that our intention was only to save them from the brutal authoritarian regime that provided them the highest standard of living in Africa. Even Harvard pollsters who have been tracking public opinion in China for more than a decade have to admit that the government is supported by over 95% of the people. Apparently they have not seen the iron fist that we fantasize about but only see economic opportunities their parents, grand parents and great grandparents could not even imagine. China is a thriving market economy not a state run economy. The Chinese state controls capital not individual enterprise and that is why our rentier masters are so fucking afraid of them.

The Halifax forum, also sponsored by NATO, draws scores of powerful military and civilian leaders. Previous speakers have included then-U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel; Adm. Phil Davidson, the commander of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command; Canadian Defense Minister Harjit Sajjan; and officials from a host of other countries, including Israel, Estonia, Afghanistan, Yemen, Poland and Japan.

The forum’s website states it is “devoted to strengthening strategic cooperation among democratic nations.” It also purports to take a critical stance toward Beijing’s autocratic expansionism, and last year released a publication called “The HFX Handbook for Democracies,” which highlights “the serious challenge that China poses.” HFX promises donors that their contributions to the forum will strengthen their governments’ “resolve to stand up to China.”

Now the question is whether the forum itself will buck the Canadian government and honor one of Beijing’s top targets.

kropotkin1951

Here is an article that lays out the facts about Xinjiang. I am ashamed at our parliamentarians for their uncritical acceptance of war propaganda.

In the last 20 years, I visited China, my home country, almost twice a year, the last visit in November 2019. I saw, with my own eyes, the amazing progress China has made, and keep daily contacts with friends, former classmates, and students in various Chinese regions, including Xinjiang. Being a minority person myself and having lived in a Muslim-majority province in China, I know the western claim about “genocide” in Xinjiang is nothing but hot air.

The urgent focus of Canadians should instead be directed towards the ongoing genocide against Indigenous nations in Canada, rather than a clearly debunked “genocide” against Uyghurs in China”.  In 2019, Prime Minister Trudeau accepted the findings of the 1200-page Final Report of MMIWG, which concludes that various Canadian colonial laws and policies were created with “the intent of destroying the Indigenous Peoples”, and that Canada has carried out “deliberate race, identity and gender-based genocide”

Almost three years have passed and we have not seen implementation of any of the Report’s 231 “imperative recommendations.” Where’s the relentless effort from MPs to give Indigenous nations the resources to get out of poverty, fight systemic racism, and regain hope for the future?  Instead, we see them shamelessly jumping on the US bandwagon to start a new cold war with China.
