Major Decisions At NATO Conference Overshadowed by Leaders' Gossip

https://buff.ly/34fyEuS

"Something big and important happened at the recent North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) conference in London and, no, it was not Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau, French President Macron, Princess Anne and British PM Johnson caught gossping about US President Trump on an open mic. The highly respected organization NATO Watch reports that there were a number of consequential outcomes of the conference, notable among them a commitment to increase military spending across Europe and in Canada by a staggering $400 billion.

NATO Watch has documented other worrisome new NATO inititiaves. For the first time ever, NATO has acknowledged outer-space as what it calls the 'fifth domain' of warfare. The other warfare domains are land, air, sea and cyberspace. Another worrying development is that NATO is backing down from a commitment to nuclear non-proliferation, arms control, and the eventual elimination of nuclear weapons..."

While Press and Public Focus on Iran, US Military Prepares For War With Russia

https://www.newsweek.com/exclusive-cold-war-back-focus-iran-military-pre...

"During the height of tensions with Iran last year, the United States conducted an unprecedented series of war games. Over five months, from May until the end of September, 93 separate military exercises were held, with forces operating in, above and around 29 countries. While the conventional view is one of Russian advantage, the new figures show that the US and its European partners far outstrip Moscow.

These operations and exercises, then NATO Commander, Army Gen Curtis Scaparrotti told Congress last Spring, were meant to 'introduce operational unpredictability to our adversaries.'  The question is: at what cost? Or more concretely, in putting two sides on a path where escalating military exercises and intermingling of forces increases tensions while also providing more and more opportunities for miscalculation..."

Defender 2020: Largest Mobilization of NATO Troops Against Russia in 25 Years

"The largest deployment of troops across the Atlantic in 25 years entered its main phase last weekend within the framework of the Defender Europe 2020 exercise. The scale of NATO's provocative military exercise underscore how far advanced the preparations for war are 75 years after the end of World War II. The United States and 18 other countries [Naturally, including Canada!] are deploying large contingents of troops from America and Western allies to the Russian border within a short period of time. NATO Defender Europe

"Though not well publicized here in Canada, Canada will participate in the NATO Defender Europe 2020 war manoeuvres held in Europe between January 12 through July 10. Science for Peace, which counts as its members the late Ursula Franklin and John Polyani, unreservedly oppose this provocative and regressive recapitulation of the brutal 20th century.

In addition to NATO's acceptance of a nuclear weapons first strike strategy, a crime against peace under international law, a military strategy permitting the use of nuclear weapons is based on the Cold War belief that a nuclear war is winnable and is an atrocious gamble with human survival. In addition, the military is the largest emitter of greenhouse gases and this poses two threats of human extinction, rendering this era the most dangerous and precarious in human history.

Yet the Government of Canada has acceded to NATO policies without any dissent by elected representatives. No NATO countries have signed the UN Treaty on the Prevention of Nuclear Weapons, leading to the elimination of all nuclear weapons. Superseding NATO and individual nation states is the UN Charter, which defines a war of aggression as the supreme crime as it encompasses all other crimes. The UN Charter is a binding international agreement..."

Canada jumps closer to military spending target thanks to Covid-19's economic damage

https://www.ctvnews.ca/politics/canada-jumps-closer-to-military-spending...

"Canada has taken a big leap closer to meeting its promise to the NATO military alliance to spend a larger share of its economy on defence thanks to an unexpected assist from COVID-19. New NATO figures released Wednesday show that largely thanks to the pandemic, Canada is posed to spend the equivalent of more of its gross domestic product on defence this year than any any point in the past decade.

NATO and the US have repeatedly criticized Canada for not meeting the target, with President Donald Trump in December calling Canada 'slightly delinquent' during a meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The NATO figures show that Canada is poised to spend 1.45 per cent of its GDP on the military this year. That is not only a big jump from the 1.29 per cent last year but the largest share of the economy in a decade."

Scott Ritter: NATO's expanding role hides the reality of a US empire in decline

https://on.rt.com/b24t

"...NATO's willingness to underwrite US military deployment in Europe and extend its reach to include the Pacific demonstrates that its current purpose is more about propping up America than securing peace. The recently concluded virtual meeting of NATO defense ministers has been billed as President Joe Biden's first opportunity to act on his promise of repairing the damage done to the military alliance by the contentious policies of his predecessor Donald Trump.

While a great deal of attention has been paid to the optics of unifying NATO under new, more inclusive American leadership, the harsh realities of the policy priorities pushed by Lloyd Austin, Biden's secretary of defense, and their underlying economics, point to a weakened US looking to further exploit a European military alliance for the purposes of propping up an America in decline.

The US also raised the possibility of enlisting NATO in the Pacific, where America is gearing up for a possible military conflict with China. While NATO has a history of extending its military reach beyond the borders of Europe - most notably in Iraq and Afghanistan, but also North Africa and the Persian Gulf - this is the first time a major discussion will take place regarding a possible NATO military role in the Pacific.

The possibility of the alliance's involvement in the region seemed attractive to Stoltenberg, who called it 'a unique opportunity to start a new chapter for transatlantic relations,' adding that China was a legitimate concern for NATO given that it, along with Russia, is 'at the forefront of an authoritarian pushback against the rules-based international order.'

As we can already see in the building of a 'Uyghur genocide' 'Free Novichocked Navalny' narratives,  plans are already well underway to give the always enthusiastic western collaborationist liberal stoogery, 'human rights' pretexts for supporting more imperialist war against official enemies they have already been well-coached to hate.

The spin is on a '360-degree approach to security' that will 'become an imperative.' Translation: NATO is coming for large swathes of the Global South, big time, under the pretense of 'addressing  both the traditional threats emanating from this region like terrorism and new risks, including the growing presence of Russia, and to a lesser extent China.'

Shocked and Awed 21st Century Geopolitics, as configured in these crucial past two weeks, spells out the Unipolar Moment is six feet under. The Hegemon will never admit it hence the NATO counterpunch, which is pre-designed. Ultimately, the Hegemon has decided not to engage in diplomatic accommodation, but to wage a hybrid war on two fronts against a relentlessly demonized strategic partnership of peer competitors..."

Incidentally, Blinken referred to the current administration as the Biden-Harris administration, the first time an American government has been identified in that manner. This is the quote from the NDP. They have become a NATO cheerleader, not just a reluctant participant. This whole quotation makes me want to puke and then tear out my hair.

Heather McPherson, Deputy Foreign Affairs Critic for the New Democrats answered yes to both questions.

“The NDP will continue to strongly support Ukraine’s bid to join the MAP program and we have and will continue to push the government to advocate for this with our NATO allies. That Prime Minister Trudeau and (Foreign Affairs) Minister (Marc) Garneau have been unwilling to explicitly state their support for Ukraine’s bid and their failure to adequately support the bid via advocacy efforts and multi-lateral diplomacy is very disturbing.

“Further, the NDP would expand both the scope of Operation Unifier and number of CAF personnel within the program. In December 2018, the NDP called for an extension of operation UNIFIER after an unprecedented act of aggression by Russia which seized three Ukrainian ships and their 20 crew members off the coast of Crimea. As you know, in March 2019 the operation was renewed. The support needs to be renewed and increased to acknowledge recent increased aggression by Russia.

“In addition, Canada should deepen its support for people-to-people links, visa-free travel for Ukrainian citizens and reinstatement of the Youth Mobility Agreement. Through Global Affairs Canada, Canada should also extend existing development assistance funding,” she said.

Discussion includes disagreement. If Lagatta feels like she is being shut down, she is capable of saying so without you putting words in her mouth.

I disagree with her that the language is that sloppy since NATO is supporting neonazi paramilitary groups in the UKraine. To me that fact, is more significant than the language being perceived as hyperbolic. But I'm not saying she or you aren't entitled to your opinion, just that I disagree.

I'd agree that there might be ambiguity in the title and that it could be misread as all NATO members are Nazis which is obviously false. But ambiguity in language doesn't always mean sloppiness and instead of focusing on deliberately misreading something, we could engage with the truth in the statement, in this case that NATO is supporting neonazi paramilitary groups in the Ukraine, and what does that say about NATO as a project and organization?
