Make no mistake, this new Super League is going to shake up soccer like nothing before

Links not working but I read an article about this. What's the big deal? So they started a league. What's to be upset about?

Rich owners will face competition for players is usually the only outcome of this kind of sports expansion. North Report is likely upset because a headline told him he should be.

It is a greedy move. Those teams already have deep pockets to recruit the most talented players from around the world but the up and comers often get their chance to develop their skills in the other equally talented teams. I don't know enough about professional sports to draw realistic scenarios but I do imagine seeing the NHL carved into to separate leagues with the super league only having teams with deep pockets would piss hockey fans off.

The NHL has too many teams already and should be in a tiered system with an elite league, like soccer is now.

Greed and the European Super League

"Suffocating the grassroots. Mocking the working class origins of the game...in the form of a proposed breakaway, like a mafia-style cartel."

An excellent deep dive analysis by Binoy Kampmark.

Imagine, greed in global sports. Next you will tell me the Olympics is all about corruption and big money.

I have always found it best not to assume things that seem obvious to me are similarly recognized and understood by others here. And even if they are details and informed analysis are important hence Kampmark's piece posted. Hopefully others will find it useful also.

Pondering

The comments and article have clarified my thinking which is this is rick folks issues that have nothing to do with anyone who isn't wealthy.

The dream of making it in sports has probably ruined a lot of lives. It's like a lottery you have to work for but will likely still lose. A few players get rich but not as rich as the owners. The monetized sport is just a way to distract the masses while they are bled dry and make even more money off the backs of the lower and middle classes. Young players dream of sports as a means of escaping poverty. That's like pinning your hopes on a lottery ticket.

Someone should start a non-profit league run by unpaid voluteers with all money going to covering expenses and supporting teams.

As to the Olympics, atheletes are no better than monkeys trained to entertain the wealthy. The Olympics are subsidized through general taxes but tickets are priced for the upper middle-class. They are intended to generate misplaced national pride.

Concerning national pride; why should I be proud of Canada winning with people who were imported from other countries specifically to perform in the Olympics?

We are also supposed to be proud of winning wars or even just contributing to them. National pride is generated by that which we have no reason to be proud of.

I think this take on why it went over like a lead zeppelin is quite good.
