In elections the odds favour the right-wing, even though working-class voters outnumber them.

The right usually win because:
1 they have the money
2 they have the media
3 they know the election math so they usually group under one right-wing banner
4 they actually focus on winning elections

Vancouver already has left of center parties.

So why are the left shooting themselves in the foot politically by having multiple left of centre parties?

Why does the left not consider it important to win elections?

The Burnaby area, municipally, provincially and even federally, is an exception to the rule, but why can't that be copied elsewhere throughout Canada?

Why is Burnaby doing that could help the left of centre in other parts of the Canada?

Just asking!

The left can't work with FPTP and can't get rid of it.

Why hasn’t the BC NDP government replaced FPTP?

NorthReport

Bill Tieleman?

But the right-wing lives in the present world where it is to your advantage to have one party running from your side.

Unfortunately the left lives in a fantasy world and usually loses

Until the left learns to compromise with each other they will have difficulty succeeding
.
When we have PR that is more the time for various political parties, that is if you want to succeed.
I wonder if the NDP will have to work with the Libs to try and stop Poilievre

https://thetyee.ca/Analysis/2018/10/08/BC-Proportional-Representation-Vote/

JKR

Bill Tieleman has been a successful BC NDP apparatchik when the NC NDP has been in and out of power. It makes sense he loves FPTP because it helps keep the BC NDP in contention and relevant at all times so it helps the BC NDP's big shots like Tieleman stay in power and have successful and lucrative careers.

They waited almost two decades to get their own dictatorship, why would they change the rules now? In Canada we hate one party states but all our parties strive for the holy grail of majority government i.e. a one party state.

JKR

It does seem like the federal NDP supports electoral reform because they can't win phoney a phoney FPTP "majority."

Dr. Karina Zeidler: Sewer Socialists of the 1900s knew how to make healthy cities (we can learn a lot from them)

We wanted our workers to have pure air; we wanted them to have sunshine; we wanted planned homes; we wanted living wages; we wanted recreation for young and old; we wanted vocational education; we wanted a chance for every human being to be strong and live a life of happiness.”

— Emil Seidel, Milwaukee’s first Socialist mayor.

In 1910, Emil Seidel became the first socialist to win a mayoral race in a major U.S. city, and the first of three Socialist mayors to serve the City of Milwaukee.

This began what was later referred to as “The Milwaukee Experiment”, a now little-known, but shockingly impressive program of civic reform that made Milwaukee the healthiest city in America. Over a period of just 10 years, the Socialists doubled the life expectancy of people living in Milwaukee.

They called themselves “Sewer Socialists”.

Before the Sewer Socialists, cholera was simply a part of life in North American cities, because most people were forced to drink water that was contaminated—let’s not mince words—by human shit. Wealthy interests tried to convince the public that getting cholera from unsafe water was something people just had to live with.

But the public in Milwaukee was not fooled. They elected Socialist leaders who promised to clean the water, by building public sewage and water treatment systems. And those leaders delivered.

The term “Sewer Socialist” began as an insult, hurled at midwestern socialists by more Utopian, eastern seaboard socialists, because people like mayors Seidel, Daniel Hoane and Frank Zeidler (no relation to the author) thought that the best way to change the world and win the support of the people was to deliver transparent, effective government that made everybody’s lives better. Milwaukee socialists adopted the term as a point of pride.

The Sewer Socialists of Milwaukee were responsible for bringing in an almost unbelievable series of “firsts” to North American settler cities: the first modern public health system, which cut infant mortality in half; the first public vaccination campaigns; the first public baths; the first eight-hour day; the first workmen’s compensation; the first public housing; the first racially integrated public housing; and even the very first Social Security program in North America.

And yes, they introduced the first public sewer and water systems, too.....

Dr. Karina Zeidler is the VOTE Socialist candidate for the school board in Vancouver.

How a Sidewalk Discovery Could Change the Vancouver Election

Elections BC is now reviewing a document Woodvine found on the sidewalk that appears to show fundraising efforts by Forward Together — Mayor Kennedy Stewart’s party — involving some of the biggest real estate developers in the city.

quote:

Developers named on the list include Terry Hui, CEO of Concord Pacific, whose 2022 donation is listed as $8,200, with a goal of $31,250. Colin Bosa, CEO of Bosa Properties and Jeff Skinner, Bosa’s vice-president of development, are listed together with a 2022 donation of $15,000 and a goal of $37,500. Francesco Aquilini, the owner of the Vancouver Canucks and managing director of Aquilini Investment Group, has a 2022 donation amount listed as $64,350, with a goal of $110,000.

The names Neil, Mark and Alvin appear in the notes section of the list, along with the initials NM. Stewart’s chief of staff is Neil Monckton. Forward Together’s executive director is Mark Hosak. Stewart’s communications director is Alvin Singh (Singh is currently running for council with Stewart’s party).

Many of the donors also correspond to people who are listed as donors on campaign donation lists published by Forward Together.

The Tyee reached out to several of the donors on the list, some of whom were willing to be interviewed.

One individual on the list, who did not want to be identified, confirmed the list is Forward Together’s.

And Jeff Guignard, executive director of the BC Alliance of Beverage Licensees, said that the $1,100 beside his name is an accurate amount he remembered donating. However, he said he couldn’t confirm whether the list is Forward Together’s as he donates to multiple political parties. He’s also unsure why he’s identified on the list as a “captain.”

Bert Hicks, the founder of Rising Tide, which consults on liquor and cannabis licensing in B.C., had a similar response. He said he’s a regular donor to multiple parties, including Stewart’s, but couldn’t confirm if the list is Forward Together’s.

Laura Ballance, the owner of a public relations firm, appears on the list alongside Christa Montpetit, but Ballance said she had no idea why her name was on the document. She says she did not donate the $5,100 listed beside her and Montpetit’s name. (Montpetit works as a consultant for liquor and hospitality businesses.)....

Meet the Young People Shaking Up Local Politics

‘I would really like to see young people scare the hell out of politicians, at all levels of government, by coming out in massive numbers and voting.’

He wore a light blue shirt and dark tie. Clean-shaven, his dirty blond hair was gently combed to the right. At the makeshift table, he stood out like a sore thumb compared to the other candidates who were years, if not decades, older than him.

Police and Politics? It’s Not a Good Mix, Say Critics

The Vancouver Police Union’s unprecedented endorsement of a party that has promised to hire more police officers could give ABC Vancouver a boost in the polls, says a political scientist who studies municipal politics.

But Stewart Prest says the move sets a dangerous precedent for the civic democratic process, and examples from the United States show that it’s not a good idea.

“Police have a huge amount of authority and power in people’s lives,” said Prest, a political scientist at Quest University.

“For democracy to function effectively, those who have that power have to be trusted by all sides of being impartial.”

Last week, for the first time in their 104-year history, the VPU voiced support for ABC Vancouver mayoral candidate Ken Sim. The union lobbies on behalf of over 1,000 officers in the city.....

A Very Caring Council

Chuka Ejeckam Photo (1)by Chuka EjeckamOctober 11, 2022

Based on their policies and behaviour, it is reasonable to suspect that governments of the global North seek to offer the entirety of the global South as sacrifice zones, condemning the billions living there to displacement, desperation, or death to feed the global North’s endless greed and appetites for consumption. This follows from their day-to-day conduct, in which it is deemed acceptable to ignore, excuse, and even directly profit from preventable violence, oppression, imperialism, inequity, illness, famine, and war. And, while some crises receive near-daily mention, others are almost entirely ignored.

A very caring council served the city of Lenore
With hearts that ached for each citizen, young and old, rich and poor
They’d heed at length, with bowed head, your tales of woe, wound, and gore
Then tell you with a calming hand why you should vote for them some more

The city sat in lands of plenty, guarded by a guarantor
Imparted council wisdom setting these conditions down as lore
“The gods have blessed us,” they would cry, “with bounty, borders, might, and more!”
And all they asked was it be taken from those who lived there before

“What of the winds,” the crowds would fret, “bringing heat and rains like none before?”
“Worry not,” the council spoke, “of things beyond such lives as yours.
It is we who set the course, and the world which will conform.
It’s best to pay it all no mind when there isn’t much you can afford.”

“What of the letters we receive, of weapons forged within our shores?
We’re told that children’s blood is spilled by blades and arrows which were, here, born.”
“Do not be troubled by the wails of the incessantly forlorn.
What is it that they propose, other than to mope and mourn?”

“We hear reports,” the public called, “of famine, illness, even war,

Afflicted on a thousand million innocents, and maybe more.”
“Oh yes,” the council said, “at this our very hearts are torn,
But to our own prosperity’s the lone allegiance we have sworn.”

For this very caring council, no single duty felt a bore
And though, of course, they were all rich, their hearts did so ache for the poor
Ached so much indeed, they said “for you whom living is a chore,
An end to all your pain and thirst awaits you through that darkened door.”

The crowds would then disperse, encouraged by a blaring horn
Ushered back to toil-for-wage beneath the landowners and lords
The council would thus retreat, back to their velvet-laden dorms
Muttering at the foul audacity of the questioners with scorn

And so the days would go, and nights turn over into morn
Sun splashing city walls upon which guard towers adorn
The waters rose, the air thickened – tomorrow’s problems to be sure
For the very caring council of the city of Lenore

That's a real mixed-bag slate to endorse for Courtenay. They don't seem to have looked into the candidates very seriously.

Especially when it an issue that municipalities have no fiscal capacity to do undertake policies to address affordable housing. A list of candidates who want to get elected. I lost a good Mayor to a flake who talks the talk about all progressive issues but in her four years on council did not bring forward a single initiative.
