Pepe Escobar: So Who Wants a Hot War?

https://www.strategic-culture.org/news/2021/04/16/so-who-wants-a-hot-war/

"...Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, Sergei Ryabkov, has struck a much less Daoist note then Peskov: 'The United States is our enemy, doing everything to undermine Russia's position in the international arena, we do not see other elements in their approach to us. These are our conclusions.' That's stone to the bone realpolitik. Ryabkov knows the Hegemon's 'non agreement capable' mindset inside out.

Eurasia integration - in both the Chinese and Russian vision - are all about interconnected economies via inter-regional trade. So it's not by accident that the Hegemon - on the verge of becoming an irrelevant player across Eurasia - is going no holds barred to harass and try to smash the continental integration by all means available. In this context, manipulating a failed state to meet its own doom is just (circus) business."

This is  an interesting piece.

Two highly problematic issues arise with this talk. First, it ignores the fact that any stable solution to the war requires either massive disenfranchisement, political cleansing, and deportation of the ‘collaborationist’ population from the breakaway Donbass region or, alternatively, the transformation of Ukraine into a radically more culturally, ideologically, and politically pluralistic country.

NATO summit to discuss Ukraine's membership next month. Nuland accompanies Blinken to Kiev

https://antibellum679354512.wordpress.com/2021/05/04/nato-summit-to-disc...

"...Although Ukraine is not officially a NATO country, it has attained NATO standards in the last five years thanks to support from Turkey, the US, the UK, [Canada,] and Poland. Ukraine enacted a strategy document in March to reclaim its occupied territories after realizing it had completed its military preparations.

The above, the author added, accounts for Ukraine's increasingly assertive if not abrasive approach toward the Donetsk and Lugansk republics in the Donbass and toward Russia in recent months. The unanimity and rapidity with which the US, NATO and the European Union fell into line with that new confrontational approach establishes without doubt the coordinated plan the parties had agreed on.

A statement by Polish President Andrzej Duda below hints at what may well be the larger plan. To add the final touch to plans for a united front against Russia and Belarus, it was announced that on his visit to Kiev starting today, Secretary of State Antony Blinken is accompanied by his recently confirmed Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland, arguably the main architect of the 2014 violent overthrow of the government of President Viktor Yanukovych..."

Pepe Escobar - Pictures of a Ukrainian Dream: What really happened during Blinken's visit to Ukraine?

http://informationclearinghouse.info/56540.htm

"Leaked info on the closed-door meeting between Blinken and Comedian-in-Charge Zelensky is no less than incandescent. Blinken seems to have read a no holds barred riot act. Here are the guidelines: All Ukrainian state corporations must be controlled by the proverbial 'foreign interests.' So board majorities must be either foreign or 5th columnists. The entire anti-corruption vertical drive must also be foreign-controlled. Same for the judicial system.

Andriy Kobolyev - an American asset - must be reinstated as head of Naftogaz. Zelensky moved mountains to get rid of Kobolyev. Blinken demanded a massive push against every Ukrainian oligarch, so that huge chunks of the Ukrainian economy are transfered to - who else - foreigners. Same for land privatization. Blinken demanded that American assets should be untouchable by Ukrainian law, and named honored figures of civil society. Maidan cookie distributor Victoria 'F**k the EU' Nuland also in the room, drew up a list of The Untouchables, and Blinken met with them separately.

Finally, the giant ghost hanging over the whole trip to Kiev had to make itself known. In practice, Zelensky was invited to turn in everyone in Ukraine who helped bring information about Hunter Biden to the media via Rudolph Giuliani. According to the source who had access to the leak, Zelensky was left beyond speechless. That's not exactly what he was expecting. Especially when it comes to transferring valuable assets controlled by Ukrainian oligarchs to 'foreign interests.' Someone will inevitably whack him.

No one is touching this leak - as it it was radioactive poison. No one will confirm it. Its plausibility though cannot be denied. Contradicting the powerful, left unnamed 'foreign interests' is simply out of the question. They now seem to be guided by a 'take the money and run' logic, as in taking over the looting of Ukraine lock, stock and barrel before the whole thing - actually a failed state - blows up."

Canada could easily be one of these 'elements'. Like the Philippines, Ukraine's economy relies on people sending money home to help their families, who are destitute. Everything I have read says that Philippine workers are often mistreated and basically indentured in many countries. Even Canada's courts and tribunals deal with individual cases of this side effect of being a temporary foreign worker. When Chinese citizens move from Xinjiang to find work in other parts of China and that is move is facilitated by the government or even private businesses, it is proof of genocide, according to NATO news outlets. Another source on the use of Turkish drones:

https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2021/10/27/ukraine-destroys-pro-russian-a...

Media reports said Kiev plans to buy around 50 Bayraktar TB2 drones, a flagship model that has been used in conflicts against Russian proxies in Syria, Libya and the Nagorno-Karabakh region at the center of a decades-long dispute between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

Ukraine and Turkey signed a memorandum in late September to establish a joint training and maintenance center for the drones in Ukraine. This month, Ukraine’s foreign minister said it plans to build a factory to produce Bayraktar drones in the country.

The sale of drones to Kiev places Ankara in a delicate position, as Turkey also cooperates in the defense sector with Russia, Ukraine's rival."

In Ukraine the US is Risking War

https://t.co/k0VDLpFfUH

"There is fear in Russia that the US is egging the Ukraine into a renewed active conflict with its renegade eastern Donbass region ad thereby into a war with Russia. In his latest RF Sitrep [former Cdn CF analyst] Patrick Armstrong recollects the most recent developments.

The fear in Moscow is not that the US will attack Russia. But the high activity of US forces in the area and the incitement Kiev gets from Washington might make the Ukrainian leadership believe that Washington has its back and will come to help when it attacks the Donbass region and Russia hits back.

That belief would be false. Alistair Crooke notes a typical US behavior towards Taiwan, Israel and the Ukraine. It incites them towards conflict but when the backlash inevitably comes it will be unable or unwilling to help them.

I also see analogies to Hong Kong where the Trump administration incited a student revolt but did nothing when China finally intervened. That was seen as a success by Trump and Pompeo, but the opposition in HK lost out and HK is no longer the US' easy entry point into China.

The Biden administration's warmongering towards Russia may be seen to be free of cost. But it takes only one miscalculation by Kiev or some unforeseen incident in the Black Sea region, and the situation could seriously escalate."

It's not that I think that China and Russia are not authoritarian its just that I don't see any countries that are much less authoritarian and many of the ones we call democratic like the Ukraine or Poland or South Korea or the US are just a authoritarian as countries Western media shun like Cuba and Venezuela and Nicaragua.

Prince, a hallmark of democracy is whether regime change can be effected at the ballot box.

in it's short history as an independent country, there has been at least four democratic regime changes in Ukraine, three where incumbent presidents have lost elections, something unimaginable in Putin's Russia.

Putin's Plans for Ukraine

https://gordonhahn.com/2021/11/29/putins-plans-for-ukraine/

"...In reality there is virtually no scenario in which Putin would seek to incorporate into Russia by force all Ukraine, even all of Eastern Ukraine, or even 'Novorossiya' or southeastern Ukraine. Putin does not want to do anything to give the West motives or the pretext to halt NordStream 2.

Putin's [previous] 'moves' in Georgia and Ukraine were countermeasures, responses to aggressive actions by Russia's neighbors supported by the West and in both cases occurring in countries the West most wants to see in NATO and, less importantly, the EU.

In Georgia, the Georgians started the August 2008 war by killing 19 Russian peacekeepers and tens if not hundreds of South Ossetian civilians in indiscriminate missile attacks. In Ukraine, the West backed a nascent 'color-revolution' that was hijacked by Ukrainian ultra-nationalists and neo-fascists.

The myth that Putin is chomping at the bit to reincorporate all Ukraine into the Russian 'fold' is a manufactured crisis. The most Putin wants is a friendly Ukraine. Beyond that, any additional, partial or full reintegration will be undertaken only as a matter of necessity created by Western actions, as occurred in the case of Crimea's annexation and support for the Donbass separatists (but notably not for actual separation/separatism thus far).

Ignored in Western analyses of a 'Russian buildup' of forces near Ukraine, which is also a troop rotation, is that there has been no shortage of aggressive moves by the West over past months and years. NATO is building a miltary base for Ukraine on the Black Sea that could have a NATO contingent.

Neo-fascist battalions incorporated into the Ukrainian army claim they continue to receive training from Western, specifically Canadian forces. Thus, the Ukrainians could restart a war even without an official decision or policy from President Volodomyr Zelenskyi, especially as Kiev is being egged on by Western claims a Russian invasion of Ukraine is coming.

Oddly, just a little more than a week ago, General Sergei Shapital, Chairman of the Ukrainian armed forces' general staff denied Russia was moving troops on Ukraine's borders.

Simon Saradzhyan in an excellent analysis of Putin's Ukraine calculus that concurs almost precisely with my own writes: 'Should, however, Putin's [scheduled] meeting with Biden either get canceled or fail to produce progress-- then Putin may indeed conclude that he has exhausted the non-military options vis-a-vis Ukraine and that use of force is necessary to defend Russia's interest in a rational Ukraine.

This seems very odd. It is a dramatic change, but I'd never heard of it until just now. When did these 90% of diplomatic staff leave Russia? The phrasing makes it seem as if it was mostly or totally during the Trump administration. Is that actually the case, or has a lot of it been in the last year? What official reasons were given for such a major move?

NDPP

The expulsions started under Obama who seized several Russian diplomatic properties and expelled their staff for alleged 'election meddling' and 'cyber attacks.'

It was apparently thought in Moscow that retaliatory expulsions might prompt the US into diplomatic negotiations leading to a resolution. More than half of US personnel were cut in response in 2017.  Instead Trump publicly thanked Russia for cutting US payroll costs and the situation deteriorated further.

More cuts occurred of Russians by Trump thereafter and were responded to in kind by Moscow.  A substantial portion of the Russian cuts to US staffing included also Russian employees as well as personnel with NASA, Agriculture and Commerce Dept employees previously stationed in Russia.

It's obviously a dangerous situation when diplomats stop talking to each other in such cases. Hopefully the announced upcoming talks between the two presidents can restore a measure of normalcy.
