Noam Chomsky has been explaining the "Crisis of Democracy" for decades now. Here is one from the 1980s or so, and another version more recently. They both state very clearly that as far as the liberal establishment is concerned, the main problem with democracy is that there is too much of it, even in its current, enfeebled state.

This vid of Chomsky from a while back just popped up on my YouTube recommendation screen, and it is also very relevant to the topic of this thread. Short version: the intellectual class is equally comfortable obeying and propping up any existing power structure, be it communist or capitalist, in both cases making false claims that the bosses are democratically legitimate.

A new poll shows that the overwhelming majority of Chinese people believe they live in a democratic country, as do the Vietnamese people. That consent of the people for great national strides forward is the main strategic threat to the "rules based order" that is instead based on development with IMF loans for infrastructure and foreign aid tied to military bases.
