came across this article last night.  it covers much of the same ground as this yurideigin article, from over a year ago, and although lacking the pretty graphics of the former, does have some added political and timely information.  well written i thought.

and, it's by someone attached to more established names, so not as easily dismissed as some guy named yuri.  probably putin's personal trollbot, next.

so, yeah, hard to see how covid _wasn't made in a lab.  in level2 containment. (= dentist office!)

Some who are oppressed are bothered because they feel nobody should be oppressed. Some who are oppressed are bothered because they want to be the ones doing the oppressing. The history of nearly every armed revolution in history ending up with the same authoritarian structures it sought to replace is testament to that.

Meanwhile, closer to home for me:

Quote:

As the Public Health Agency of Canada refuses to release uncensored internal documents, a Conservative MP says he wants to know how far Canada's collaboration with China on Level-4 pathogens went — and why two federal scientists were let go by the National Microbiology Lab in Winnipeg in January.

"We need these documents. We need to know what the Government of Canada was doing through the National Microbiology Lab in Winnipeg with respect to cooperating with the Wuhan Institute of Virology in Wuhan, China," Conservative foreign affairs critic Michael Chong said during a special parliamentary committee hearing on Canada-China relations Monday night.

The special committee has demanded to know why two federal government scientists were escorted out of Canada's only Level 4 Lab in July 2019, just four months after one of them shipped samples of the Ebola and Henipah viruses to the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China — stories first published by CBC News.

Two months after that shipment, on May 24, 2019, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) referred an "administrative matter" to RCMP that resulted in the removal of two Chinese research scientists — Xiangguo Qiu and her husband, Keding Cheng — and several international students on July 5.

I read the article and it was nothing but speculation with a very nasty anti-Chinese after taste. He admits he has no scientific proof just theories he is postulating but then goes on to primarily blame the Chinese virologists, authorities and government.

I’ll describe the two theories, explain why each is plausible, and then ask which provides the better explanation of the available facts. It’s important to note that so far there is no direct evidence for either theory. Each depends on a set of reasonable conjectures but so far lacks proof. So I have only clues, not conclusions, to offer. But those clues point in a specific direction. And having inferred that direction, I’m going to delineate some of the strands in this tangled skein of disaster.

...

Here are the players who seem most likely to deserve blame.

  1. Chinese virologists. First and foremost, Chinese virologists are to blame for performing gain-of-function experiments in mostly BSL2-level safety conditions which were far too lax to contain a virus of unexpected infectiousness like SARS2. If the virus did indeed escape from their lab, they deserve the world’s censure for a foreseeable accident that has already caused the deaths of three  million people. True, Shi was trained by French virologists, worked closely with American virologists and was following international rules for the containment of coronaviruses. But she could and should have made her own assessment of the risks she was running. She and her colleagues bear the responsibility for their actions."

Do you understand that your guilt-tripping attempts at emotional blackmail of people who have legitimate questions about the covid response and whether lockdowns and mask mandates actually even protect people from dying from covid is getting old?

Aristotleded24

Lockdowns and mask mandates: which side relies more on science, their advocates or their detractors?

Quote:

Of course, many people have been sceptical of “the science” (by which I mean the officially endorsed science) from the very beginning. And of course, they’ve formed communities online with other like-minded persons. (Lockdown Sceptics would be one example of such a community.)

In an unpublished paper, researchers from MIT sought to understand how the users of these communities obtain, analyse, share and curate information. Surprisingly (to them), they found that users place a premium on data literacy and scientific rigour.

The researchers used a mixed methods design. First, they analysed a large sample of pandemic-related tweets sent between January and July 2020. Second, they employed ethnographic methods to study users on “anti-mask” Facebook groups. (Note that they use “anti-mask” as a “synecdoche for a broad spectrum of beliefs: that the pandemic is exaggerated, schools should be reopening, etc.”)

In their analysis of Twitter data, the researchers found that sceptics “share the second-highest number of charts across the top six communities”, and that they are “the most prolific producers of area/line charts”, while sharing “the fewest number of photos”. They also found that such individuals “often create polished counter-visualizations that would not be out of place in scientific papers”.

In their study of “anti-mask” Facebook groups, the researchers found that users “value unmediated access to information and privilege personal research and direct reading over “expert interpretations”, and that “their approach to the pandemic is grounded in more scientific rigour, not less”.

“Most fundamentally,” the researchers write, “the groups we studied believe that science is a process, and not an institution”.

Preliminary talks on lifting Canada-U.S. border restrictions underway

---------------

Preliminary talks on lifting restrictions along the Canada-U.S. border are underway, according to an official with direct knowledge of the file.

CBC News has confirmed initial conversations between Canada and the U.S. are happening at the officials level, meaning the politicians who ultimately will make the decision are not directly involved in those talks yet.

The official said no decisions are expected in the short term, but that there is hope for "positive news as summer progresses," especially in light of the increase in vaccination rates in Canada.

----------------

Aristotleded24

More on when restrictions might ease:

Quote:
The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has issued preliminary guidelines detailing what Canadians can expect to do this summer and fall with fewer pandemic restrictions, all dependent on whether the country can meet its vaccine targets.

If 75 per cent of Canadians eligible for vaccines have had one dose and 20 per cent have had a second dose, summer can include camping, hiking, picnics, and patios, but crowds should still be avoided, PHAC says.

By fall, if 75 per cent of those eligible for a vaccine have been fully vaccinated, expect to be able to gather indoors with people outside your household, participate in indoor sports, and attend family gatherings.

Who are we as a country? Are we a nation of free adults, where the government responds to the will of the people? Or are we a nation of serfs and subjects to be ruled over by appointed elites?

JKR

I'd say governments are responding to the will of the people as people expect their governments to deal effectively with COVID-19.

That's true. The science shows that this right-wing state which never imposed mask mandates had multiple waves of covid, thus proving that masks work and are absolutely necessary.

Meanwhile in Taiwan:

Quote:
Taiwan reported 206 new domestic Covid-19 infections on Sunday (May 16), as the island grapples with an increase in community infections.

Taiwan has appealed to people to avoid panic buying of items such as instant noodles and toilet paper as new curbs on gatherings and movement took effect to rein in the spread of Covid-19 during a spike in domestic infections.

Taiwan raised its coronavirus alert level in the capital, Taipei, and the surrounding city, on Saturday (May 15), imposing two weeks of restrictions that will shut many venues and limit gatherings.

David Katz warned about this scenario last year, whereby once lockdowns are released, the virus moves through the population and you still haven't solved the problem of no population immunity. Dan O'Brien, responding to claims of the success of countries that supposedly crushed covid, predicted that they may end up experiencing the same wave anyways back in October. Let's also remember that Australia is about to enter its flu season, so we don't know how that will play out. I remember the so-called herd immunity strategy being derided early on, but you look at jurisdictions that have done that, like Sweden, Belarus, Florida, Texas, and South Dakota, and their new case trends range anywhere from stable to steep decline. So a rise in the number of infections was inevitable. Wouldn't it have made more sense to accept that reality and prepare for it rather than trying to run and hide?

In a population of 23.5 million that doesn't seem so bad.  With a population of around 35 million Canada has thousands a day.  At 3 or 4 hundred a day we would be dancing in the streets.

Informative yes, but again seems to think China has to prove it didn't come from a lab.  I can't think of a country that would allow outside investigators to access lab notes on a fishing expedition.  What we know for sure is that China warned the world early on and the world decided not to prepare.  In full view of the world China locked down Wuhan and gave the gene sequencing as soon as they had it.

Meanwhile Canada doesn't want to lift the patents on vaccines.

Most people would prefer this does not reoccur so we just need to follow the science to try and prevent that from happening.
