There was a minor blip of what I thought was encouraging public outrage with the worldwide protests that happened in March 2003 before the US invaded Iraq.
I marched in Vancouver with my spouse and two sons and mother-in-law. It was a grand day spent with tens of thousands of peace loving people. But it was a turning point for our society. This global outrage was ignored and then the citizens in Western democracies did not punish the war criminals but in most cases rewarded them with reelection. Although I still protest sometimes it is with a sense of futility not with any real hope of enacting change.
NDP constituency associations marched proudly on that day. Not long after the NDP determined that NATO was not to be opposed but changed from within. My politics for peace and international cooperation have remained the same but now they are almost seen as anti-Canadian as our none stop propaganda machine revs up the war mongering and the Keeney O'Tooles of the world amplify the Hill and Knowlton imperial messaging.
Yeah there hasn't been that kind of moral clarity on the left since. I agree that one negative consequence was that feeling of the protests ending in futility but I think a lot of people were affected and radicalized by the movement even if it failed to stop the war. It completely transformed my politics. I was growing jaded but I still had time for debates about liberal interventionism. That is one benefit of the Republican party: they are good at peeling off the mask so that even the very naive can see what the US is really about.

While Biden may well be personally corrupt, his own financial situation is unlikely to interfere with the purity of his imperialist foreign policy. With Trump, grift got in the way of orthodox policy from time to time.

As with 'weapons of mass destruction', leaks from anonymous intelligence officials are being presented as evidence in a coordinated media campaign. I suspect that Trump will not fare any worse with the current corruption investigation than he has in the past when confronted with proof of his company's corrupt and somewhat illegal practices. But who knows maybe he got sloppier. In the meantime the whole family is working the long con and hoping for a reset in the Oval Office.
