A ceasefire between Israel and Hamas was finally announced Thursday night after 11 days of devastating bombardment and indiscriminate rocket fire that killed over 240 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and 12 people in Israel. As far as many observers are concerned, this deal — which, if it holds, will undoubtedly prevent countless more deaths, injuries, and wanton destruction — should finally put an end to the vicious saga.
This desperate return to “calm,” however, remains a fundamental part of the problem.

In the midst of our outrage over Israel's provocative violence toward the Palestinians, CJPME is pleased to announce one bit of great news! Former Deputy Leader of the federal NDP Libby Davies has joined the CJPME board of directors!
CJPME is delighted to have Libby join the team, and will benefit greatly from her insight and expertise. Her broad understanding of federal politics, her long-time experience in local organizing, and her passion for human rights will make her an invaluable member of the CJPME Board. The CJPME team looks forward to benefitting from her wisdom as we push our government to adopt a more just and human-rights centred approach to the Middle East.
Libby served as Member of Parliament for Vancouver East from 1997 to 2015, and as the Deputy Leader of the Federal NDP from 2007 to 2015. During her time as an MP, Libby was always an outspoken advocate for Palestinian human rights, and she brought a principled and courageous perspective to the issue while on Parliament Hill. She was a member of the Canada Palestine Parliamentary Friendship Association, and helped plan events on the Hill to foster awareness of Palestine.
After Israel’s war on Gaza in 2009 resulted in the deaths of 1400 Palestinians, Libby was part of a small group of two Canadian MPs who visited the territory. Following her visit, she introduced a statement and report to Parliament calling on Canada to support the Goldstone Report and its conclusions, which found evidence of Israeli war crimes. Before her time in federal politics, Libby was a community organizer in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, and elected to Vancouver City Council for 5 consecutive terms. She has written a political memoir called “Outside In” about her political experiences. She was awarded the Order of Canada in 2016.
Libby has frequently expressed her appreciation of CJPME’s work, stating recently, “CJPME does exactly what needs to be done in the world of politics. As an MP, I admired and relied upon the information that the organization published.” Libby describes the issue of Palestinian human rights as a “multi-generational challenge,” and one that she’s been concerned about since long before her tenure as an MP.

In a surprise campaign on Monday, Israeli authorities launched “Operation Law and Order,” in which thousands of national police officers, Border Police members, and army reservists arrested hundreds of Palestinian citizens of Israel accused of participating in this month’s mass wave of protests.
In their announcement to the press, the Israeli police claimed that they were looking for “the rioters, the criminals, and everyone who was involved in the events, in order to prosecute them” and to “settle the score” with those who took part. In the two weeks prior, the police had already arrested more than 1,550 people and filed about 150 indictments, some against more than one defendant.

THIS WEEK, President Joe Biden met with leaders from five major American Jewish organizations in response to a letter expressing concerns about a “surge in antisemitic attacks,” which the groups connect to popular discourse and protest surrounding Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. Republican Senators Tom Cotton and Mitch McConnell announced their intention to introduce a bill combatting antisemitic hate crimes.
