I also agree that the important principle is that we are not in a position to be exerting our moral authority over the rest of the world especially when it is so obviously used as a cover for war, sanctions, and arms dealing.

The human rights 'champions' on here will say they oppose equally regimes that are pro-US like Saudi Arabia, Israel and Colombia as much as they do US enemies like Iran, Venezuela, China, Belarus, ect. But that 'balance' is ridiculous if you look at what their opposition can actually accomplish. They are citizens of a country (or of the client-state of that country) which sends vast quanities of cash and arms to the first group of countries. Changing that would be extremely powerful leverage to get these countries to stop committing atrocities. What leverage do we have with the second group of countries?  The leverage that cco outlined in post #50-sanctions, bombs, arming groups and destabilizing whole regions. We've seen this play out again and again and no one's humans rights are improved but average life expectancy rates plummet. So why would anyone thnk these should be equally opposed when what can be accomplished is as different as night and day? It's only equal if being called a 'tankie' is as important a consideration as people in another country getting starved and bombed.

Of course there is no possibility that this minor pawn was sacrificed by his masters because NATO does not play elaborate games that breach all international conventions. 4) On Syria, I support the people who are building Rojava, not the State Department.  It can't be progressive in any way to back the Syrian government against Rojava.  If Rojava ends up getting crushed-just as when the Catalonia alternative Left was betrayed in Spain in the Thirties- there won't be any remaining hope for anything progressive or transformative in that country.

Rojava isn't an exclusively Kurdish project- there are ethnic Turks and Syrian Arabs working on it as well.   And the State Department hates the very idea of it- the LAST thing they want to support in the Middle East is a secular, egalitarian, multicultural alternative to the status quo- Rojava is a direct challenge to the approved narrative which holds that people in that part of the world- including the regimes the U.S. backs in Turkey and Israel- are incapable of supporting anything but violent nationalism or religious extremism.  

There is absolutely nothing positive that could come of Rojava being crushed.  Once that area goes back to being nothing but Syrian and Turkish territory, history ends there.  And no possible good would come of the Rojava project being replaced by anything authoritarian or ethnic-supremacist.

Rojava is where the future can be born.   Syria under Assad is where nothing is possible and nothing can be born, just as is the case with Turkey under Erdogan.  Syria and Turkey, under their present governments, are countries where history will always be over.

I've never based my views on Assad on what the corporate media reports.  I base it on his fixation with crushing Rojava- no one that would want to do that could ever be capable of doing anything progressive.  And there is no possible case for siding with an authoritarian against a libertarian socialist project.

Yeah I remember reading George Kennan's lauded telegram on the Soviet Union with his 'insight' on the 'paranoid' nature of the Soviet Union being linked to a long tradition in Russian politics inherited by the Tsars. No mention of the fact all of the Capitalist industrial countries sent their armies in to crush the revolution in its infancy. Pretty top-notch analysis missing that bit. I don't buy it. Even in that severely truncated exchange the pilot repeatedly tries to ascertain where the diversion order is coming from and they avoid giving him a direct response. 

If the server was already blocked in Russia due to false bomb threats Belarus had reason to believe this too was false. 

Are they claiming the other airports were refusing to allow the plane to land? 

Of course they have motivation to claim innocence. Claiming otherwise shows the bias in the article.

In this civil war I thought the heaviest fighting has been against ISIS and its minions and there have been mostly skirmishes with the YPG. I would like to read more about his obsession with this particular group so post something.

I did read it. It doesn't matter who sent the email with regards to the actions of Belarus unless they themselves sent it. Did Vilnius alert Belarus that they were refusing to allow the plane to land?

I think if that were the case we would have heard. 

To Kropotkin, the Meng case is not comparable. The plane was not diverted. She knew she would be landing in Canada and that we have an extridition treaty with the US. Obviously she didn't know she would be arrested. She is being treated like a Queen whereas the two Michael's are being abused. 

I wonder how they would react if we treated Meng the way the men are being treated.  Is that what we should do?  As long as one side does something then the other side can do the same right?

Yes, and NATO agents boarded the plane and arrested Protasevich against the pleas of Belarusian officials to leave him be.

She was in transit and was arrested not for any known crime but because the US says she might have been misleading on a power point presentation that was made in Hong Kong to a non US bank about a subsidiary of her corporation. That is far more subtle than the Belarus grab but it is still a grab. It is also not the first time that the US has arrested a high tech executive of a foreign competitor with the sole intention of destroying the competition.

As for the two Michaels I think people cannot have it both ways. If China is a totalitarian regime with a secret police that keeps tabs on everyone connected to any Western NGO's then why would they arrest the wrong pawns. By saying that the Michael's are innocent you are either saying the Chinese are incompetent at internal security or that Canada has no spies in China working to advance the Western agenda of overthrowing the CPC.

International law doesn't exist because there is no body to enforce it. Yes she was in transit but she was still on Canadian soil willingly knowing we have an extridition treaty. Personally I believe she should have been released the moment Trump admitted it was political but I also believe that at least our upper courts do follow the rule of law. 

I did not claim that the two Michaels are innocent. I said that they are being treated abusively, unlike Meng who is living like a Queen. If we were willing to treat Meng like the Micheals I think their living conditions would improve dramatically.  But, we aren't willing to do that because here it would be against the law. 

The US openly assasinates people in other countries with drones. There is no doubt in my mind that that has led other countries to do the same thing through different methods. That doesn't make it okay.

I saw and read the transcript. ATC was evasive and pressuring the pilot to divert when for the safety of Belarus it would have been far better to allow the plane to continue to its desination.  The destination airport did not make that request. 

There was no communication with ATC in the departure or arrival airports offering to divert the flight.  No one asked Belarus to divert the flight when it was closer to the destination airport than it was to the diversion point. It is absolute BS that Belarus is some innocent victim in all of this. The US, the Ukraine, and anyone else also being guilty would not absolve Belarus. 

There is morality and there is reality. The reality is Belarus will not be permitted to get away with this and it is not because anyone gives a shit about the two people being held. Air space belongs to the powerful movers and shakers of the world that know no borders (virtually). Neither the EU nor the US can tolerate this. Punishment will be severe.

They are in prison because they have been convicted of a criminal offense.  You are saying that this woman who owns a residence in Vancouver should never have come here because she knows that Canada has an extradition treaty with the US. We have treaties with over 300 countries. I guess by definition everyone who flies internationally is in the same position she was in before changing flights in Canada. Should we lock up all people who another country wants extradited and put them in solitary confinement or what? Extradition cases always take years so what is the rule of law you think should apply. Currently since there is no violence alleged an ankle bracelet is pretty standard. What punishment do you think she should be undergoing because of these Trumped up charges.

I don't think she should be punished in any way. I am saying if we were willing to do that the two Michaels would be better treated. Unlike China's laws and judges, Canadian law and judges are protecting Meng from being treated the way they are being treated. 

There are ways in which China is better than Canada but it is silly to claim that the reverse is not also true. I am sickened by the finding of the graves of indigenous children. Nevertheless Tiananmen square didn't happen in Canada.  The depravity of man provides plenty of wrongs to go around and very little earned righteousness.

I guess you do not understand that if you are charged with similar crimes in Canada you get the same treatment. No Western country has open court trials of people charged with espionage.

Has Canada even tried to give an alternate explaination for why China chose the two Michaels out the 300,000+ Canadians that live in China if it wasn't related to espionage? Did China supposedly just pick their names out of a hat? 

I get that Michael Spavor is supposed to just be an average small business owner who hangs out with Kim Jong-un. That doesn't sound like someone who would be connected to intelligence.

You just changed the goal posts. So you now concede that an open trial is not a thing in Canada for espionage but you want to talk about the fact that we parole people. I frankly don't know what their system is for early release but I unlike you actually think they have a functioning legal system that they have committed crimes against and will be dealt with like others who have committed those crimes in China. Why should the fact they are Western spies mean they would be given different treatment under the legal system?

As spies the government at any time could release them and show them the door but frankly that train has left the station because even after Trump openly stated that Ming was a trade dispute bargaining chip we continued to hold her for extradition. That is not the international norm and no other country would expect Canada to detain people under those circumstances. I was hopeful that Biden's new AG would abandon the request for extradition but instead the US wants to double down on Trump's trade war.

I'm focusing on the point that in Canada prisoners are treated better than in China if Meng and the two Michaels are any example. I agree that she should be released. I don't understand why her lawyers are not using Trump's words in court but I am not a lawyer. So far Canada has yet to use tanks against Canadian citizens. Some things are better in China but some things are better in Canada.

We have the transcript of the recording. The pilot was tricked into landing. Belarus took the couple off the plane. While it would be interesting to know who made the false threat we don't need to. Those two facts are enough.
