After two years of political deadlock and four rounds of elections, as of Tuesday evening it seems that Israel is about to have a new government, putting an end to Benjamin Netanyahu’s 12-year tenure as prime minister. If all goes according to plan, the two leaders of the newly formed coalition, Yair Lapid and Naftali Bennett, who will be rotating in the prime minister’s seat, will aim to swear in their government next week, after having successfully formed an unlikely alliance between religious settlers, hawkish and moderate right wingers, secular liberals, and Palestinian Islamists. Nonetheless, Israeli politics has shown just how fragile and unstable it can be, and in a week’s time, things may still change drastically.

I was 18 years old when I first saw the Gaza Strip. It was 2002 — the peak of the Second Intifada — and I had enlisted to the Israeli army as a scout for the Field Intelligence Corps. The area I was stationed to monitor was nicknamed the berech (Hebrew for “knee”) on the northeastern edge of the strip. I began every day by zooming in and out of a shack where a single Palestinian family was residing, looking on at people who had almost nothing. I remember them like the back of my hand: a mother, a grandfather, and a boy with bright blue eyes. Every night, they were the last thing I looked at before going to sleep.

Is this the end of Netanyahu's 12-year stint as Israeli PM? | Inside Story
The latest chapter in the Israel-Palestine conflict unfolded in many locations, all at once. In the Gaza Strip, civilian population centres were heavily bombarded by Israeli fighter planes and artillery, bringing death, injuries and massive damage to property. Towns in Israel were targeted by Palestinian rockets launched from Gaza; those that get past Israel’s Iron Dome missile-defence system also kill and destroy. In Jerusalem, settlers are attempting to forcibly displace Palestinians from their homes and worshippers have clashed with Israeli forces in one of the holiest sites for Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
In Israeli cities, the tension between Palestinians and Jews is rising. Anger and frustration from decades of dispossession, neglect and discrimination – coupled with images that for many represent the desecration of al-Aqsa – sparked eruptions of street violence by Palestinians, mostly from the margins of their society, against Jews.

The last thing Wafaa Zbeidat ever expected was to be arrested in her own home and forced to spend the night in jail.
Zbeidat, a 40-year-old political activist and mother of four, recounts how Israeli police broke into her home last Wednesday morning. “They didn’t care that I was at home with my children, or that my husband has cancer and is in bad health, that he cannot be left alone for a moment,” she says. “They arrested me in the most humiliating fashion, put me in a cell, and began the interrogation only after six hours. After that, they transferred me to a detention center.”
