A video tweeted by incumbent Liberal candidate Chrystia Freeland, who served as deputy prime minister in Justin Trudeau's government, was given a warning label Sunday from Twitter, which marked it as "manipulated media."

Freeland's tweets, posted in both English and French, contain several edits and show Conservative leader Erin O'Toole answering a question about privatized health care during an online question-and-answer session in July 2020 during the Conservative leadership race.

Strangely when I heard this my response was how far down the rabbit hole can we go before we find a tea party? A foreign owned corporation inserting itself into our democratic process in aid of our furthest right party. Of course it is balanced by a former POTUS inserting himself into the campaign as well, on behalf of the other side of Canada's duopoly. While Canadians may not quite get it, clearly, America's elite understands we are a client regime not a sovereign nation whose internal affairs are sacrosanct.

Watch for further interference by our US rulers if the NDP surges to any dangerously high percentage.

An interesting local development in Courtenay Alberni is that the Green riding association has voted to not run a candidate against Gord Johns. I saw a photo op with the Green candidate from the last election and Gord on the campaign trail. This is a part of the country where the ridings swing between the NDP and Conservatives.

Last election the results were NDP - 41.2 Cons - 33.1 Greens -  13.5 Liberals - 11.9 Marxist Leninist - 0.04 It should turn Gord's seat into one of the safest in the country. I am really glad for that because I want him to be MP but I can't bring myself to vote for his party this time.

Are there any other Green riding associations who have done the same thing as Courtenay Alberni?

Vast majority of Canadians believe Trudeau could have waited a year until calling election seen as a 'power grab'

https://nationalpost.com/news/politics/vast-majority-of-canadians-believ...

'The Liberals' lead over the Conservative party has dwindled to barely two per cent as a tightened race heads into second week.'

"Nearly seven out of 10 Canadians think that Liberal party leader Justin Trudeau could have waited until at least next year before calling the current federal election, and a large majority believe he did it now as a 'power grab' to win a majority government, according to a new Leger poll.

Throughout the first week of the campaign, Trudeau has faced repeated questions from both media and opposition parties about why he decided to dissolve the minority parliament earlier this month and plunge the country into a federal election, particularly in light of the COVID-19 pandemic..."

There is a palpable national anger about this unnecessary, unwanted election at a time when people would have expected politicians and the government to attend to the urgent matters, international and domestic, that so obviously call for  immediate attention.

It would seem that many pundits are starting to question the ability of the Liberal's to form a majority. I generally don't like Keith because he is a right wing hack who has a very strong anti-NDP bias. This analysis of BC's ridings is a good breakdown of which party owns which region of the province. I agree that if Trudeau loses seats to the NDP it will be because he loses seats in the Lower Mainland especially Burnaby, Vancouver and Surrey.

This province has 42 ridings and about 15 of them are strongholds for the various parties. The Conservatives, whose 17 seats are the most of any party, are almost unbeatable in the eastern Fraser Valley, some of the Interior and most of the northern region of the province. The Liberals, with 11 seats, are entirely confined to Metro Vancouver when it comes to areas of strength. Especially in Vancouver and Surrey, where they won six of nine ridings in 2019. The NDP is strongest on Vancouver Island, where it won five of seven ridings last time around (the Green Party won the other two) and the east side of Vancouver and nearby suburbs. Unless there is a significant shift in voting patterns, only about a dozen or so ridings can be considered truly competitive and liable to change hands on Sept. 20.

This is the part that O'Toole keeps avoiding to talk about with the Conservative approach to Canada's Health Care System. As a matter of fact to have fairness, we should be heading in the opposite direction, and eliminating the private clinics as much as possible, to ensure that the ultra rich don't always end up at the front of the line. And as the NDP keeps suggesting, we need to include Pharmacare and Dental programs as well to the public system.

Unbranded

@Unbranded63

We have a limited number of health professionals in Canada. When you create private clinics, you're not taking pressure off the public system, you're taking professionals out of the public system. Leads to longer wait times in the public system which defeats access. #cdnpoli

Editorializing. I haven't noticed angry Canadians stomping about grumbling about the election. Sure, everyone knows Trudeau is having this election to try to get a majority.  That doesn't mean they are angry about it or that it will impact their vote even if they were furious.

Liberals announced they were going to tax the banks a wee bit more today, purposely the same day the NDP were discussing cell phone prices in Canada, but why didn't Trudeau actually do it during the past 6 years? The NDP to do well this election are going to have to go bold and big. The purpose of the exercise is to win. Why doesn't the NDP announce the elimination of the special capital gains tax (50% of any capitable gains is not taxable). If the NDP is serious about taxing the ultra-rich, it would be an ideal place to start.

Vancouver Liberal candidate makes series of rapid-fire home deals, insists he's no speculator

Local housing advocate Rohana Rezel was the first to go public with his concerns about Noormohamed’s dealings, and shared his research with our station — which we verified through land title records.

He argues what’s happened here qualifies as flipping.

“On the one hand, you have Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau promising to crack down on speculation and flipping, and at the same time, you have a candidate that’s engaging in that very behaviour,” Rezel said.

NEWS 1130 asked Noormohamed how many homes he has sold within a two-year period after purchase within the last decade, and he said he didn’t want to speculate.

His staff says they will try to provide some more information on this, but that it may take time.

I'm curious as to how they measured the "deep anger".  Seems a little strong for an election call. I could see deep anger over Afghanistan.  Oh, I know,  Green and Conservative voters are deeply angry because they are going to lose seats.

For those whose political memories don't go back 30 years. From wikipedia:

wikipedia wrote:

Notwithstanding all of this, Peterson's Liberal Party still retained a comfortable lead over the Progressive Conservatives and NDP in mid-1990 public opinion polls, as their party leaders Mike Harris and Bob Rae, respectively, were not expected to be strong challengers. The PC Party was broke after the 1987 election, and anticipating an early election call they held their leadership contest in May 1990 with a membership vote instead of a delegated convention, they still struggled due to newly minted leader Harris's inexperience as well as an association with Prime Minister Brian Mulroney's growing unpopularity.[26] The NDP having never won an Ontario election and Official Opposition leader Bob Rae was considering retiring from the legislature after one more term. As a result, Peterson decided to call a snap election, less than three years into his mandate. This proved to be his greatest mistake.[22]

Many voters saw the early election as a mark of arrogance, and a sign that Peterson's Liberals had become detached from the electorate. There was no defining issue behind the campaign, and many believed that Peterson was simply trying to win re-election before the economic downturn reached its worst phase. Some Liberal cabinet ministers, most notably Greg Sorbara and Jim Bradley, were strongly opposed to the early election call. Sean Conway, a member of Peterson's inner circle, would later acknowledge that most backbench MPPs also opposed the timing of the campaign.

The Liberals not only lost the election to the NDP, but Peterson lost his own seat in London to the NDP candidate. People were angry about the unnecessary election, even though there was no pandemic at the time.

The NDP and the CPC should remind voters every day from now until September 20th, that this is an unnecessary election, and simply an attempted power grab by the Liberals. I think we're all with you on the need for movement-building, but how would you say that should be manifested while the election is underway?

What is it that you personally want to see built, that you've been a part of trying to build?

Reconciliation will be important for me as will be pride in Canada, building it up, making more opportunity for more people including Indigenous Peoples. Trudeau has no control over Elections Canada. He can't tell them where to put polling stations.  Having said that I seem to recall before the election was called Elections Canada made a statement saying they could hold elections safely but would prefer a longer writ to give them more time to prepare due to the pandemic.

I think asking Canadians for a fresh mandate due to the dramatic changes since the last election is reasonable. Refusing to give Elections Canada more than the minimum time to prepare has resulted in their inability to set up campus polls.

Singh should double down on this without saying "Trudeau doesn't want you to vote".  Instead it should be worded as "because Trudeau wouldn't allow Elections Canada more time it will be more difficult for youth to vote. Conincidentally Trudeau doesn't do as well with younger people."

This is a good issue for Singh to get young people angry about. There are great soundbites available on this issue.  "Democracy is weakened when governments make it more difficult for people to vote." is a great one. It ties it in with Republican efforts.  "Government" includes Election's Canada so there is no direct defence on this for Trudeau. Especially when Election's Canada responds with "but we asked for more time".

When I get the idea that someone is unfairly making something more difficult for me to do I get more determined to do it. Getting angry about being treated unfairly is a great motivator.

Pondering

Would the NDP be allowed to set up stations on campus to help and encourage students to register to vote by mail? The NDP can't take registrations but could they set up an information booth with computers and scanners at the ready at even one big university. Somewhere that could provide photo opportunities for the MSM.
