Roughly, excluding the seats they won, the NDP finished 2nd in 63 other seats in 2019.

Didn't work out that way between 2006-2011.

Just watched Jagmeet's presser in Hamilton this morning, talking about actually delivering on $20 an hour minimum wage for working people, $10 child care across Canada for working families, and paid sick leave for Canadian workers, as opposed to Trudeau's constant snow-job of talking but not doing anything. It was quite an impressive press conference Singh gave in contrast to what we have seen from Trudeau this election.

I don't disagree about the NDP, but all and all being in opposition was good for the Liberal Party. Their grassroots organized to block the crowning of one of the roommates Ignatieff/Rae to surprise everyone who was relying on the mainstream media to tell them who the next leader of the Liberal Party would be. The right of the party collaborated to sink Dion but that just ultimately weakened them more with their worst electoral showing during Ignatieff's run. Trudeau's first campaign where he brought up ending FPTP hundreds of times would have been unheard of in the Chretien/Martin years. If the NDP and Bloc had held the Liberals to a minority in 2015, we might have gotten electoral reform and we did get marijuana legalization which was completely off the table with a Martin government.

An upcoming Liberal leadership contest could easily be a battle between the awful Freedland and Goldman Sachs alumni Mark Carney but you never know, a Dion-like candidate with more respect for Parliament might sneak in as a dark horse. If the Liberals were smart they would realize their days of Majority governments are over and be thinking about how to become a party that can best build coalitions in Parliament.

NorthReport

2 weeks to go, so it must be time for the Liberals to trot out the usual 'you have to vote Liberal to keep the Conservatives out' card. At least Chretien told the truth, which rarely happens coming from the Liberals, when he said 'the Red Book (which is the Liberal election platform) is only for the election campaign, and Liberals throw it away on election nite). The main problem with all this constant Liberal election refrain, is that as soon as the election is over, the Liberals always revert back to their true selves, which is a lot more closer to the Conservatives, than the NDP. 3. As the deplorable situation in Afghanistan shows, the US-based approach to security is beyond the end of its shelf life. Moreover, militarism is causing massive amounts of carbon pollution and environmental degradation. Do you support Canada’s withdrawal from senseless overseas military  commitments, an end to wasting money on military hardware, conversion of war industries to peaceful production and establishing relations of respect and cooperation with other nations?

Unfortunately the NDP is H & K led and the only foreign policy issue the media wants to talk about is the two Michaels. Imagine if the NDP was actually brave enough to call bullshit and say they indeed are spies and we need to end the sham with Meng Wanzhou and open up talks with the Chinese on a release of our spies. They did no acts of terrorism but merely intelligence gathering so it should be no problem for competent diplomats to achieve their return.

Jagmeet is an asshole. He parachuted in from Ontario because the people of Burnaby vote for socialists and now he is not leading the charge against TMX. There is no study that needs to be done and besides in BC we know what it means when the NDP says it opposes something but has to study it when they take office. Site C and Coast Gas tell us all we need to  know. He would also send the RCMP to arrest Land Defenders as soon as his Ottawa handlers told him the pipeline has to be built.

If he was serious about climate change and indigenous rights he would be spending a day fasting with them and stridently calling for the immediate halt of construction, especially of the tank farm and other infrastructure being built in Burnaby's residential neighbourhoods.

kropotkin1951

This is what did not make center stage in the national debate despite it being done in Jagmeet's backyard, by a government of Canada hired contractor. Fuck you Jagmeet, go back to Ontario where you belong, a real BC politician would have been standing on the national stage defending his neighbour's opposition, to a state owned pipeline.

Trudeau pledges to cut Canada's oil emissions even as country keeps pumping more

Canadian oil production will expand for nearly two more decades, the Canada Energy Regulator (CER) forecast last November.

Trudeau’s pledge comes with numerous unknowns, including the rate of emissions decline it wants and how the government would enforce the lower levels.

“The announcement they made is too vague to really inspire confidence,” said Cam Fenton, Canada team leader at environmental group 350.org.

Curbing emissions from oil extraction while allowing production to rise would not be meaningful, since most of crude’s associated emissions occur when it is used in combustion engines, Fenton said.

When you look at mainstream media in Canada a week before the election, and that is almost every federal election, it's as if it's wall to wall coverage depicting a giant Liberal commercial 24/7 for the entire week. That the NDP elects anyone in such an unbalanced and unfair political system boggles the mind, and is a testament to the strength of what the NDP represents to a lot of Canadians. I think this analysis  of the election is spot on. I agree that our politics are pedestrian but would add that their shoes are worn out. Canadian democracy is not about citizens engaging with politicians so that the leaders know what the people want it is about PR companies trying to convince people to vote for a pig in a poke. The only thing our politicians agree on is that other countries need to be sanctioned because they are not democratic like us.
