Tomorrow is Earth Hour, starting at 8:30 p.m.
Yes, I’ve heard the cynical politics concerning Earth Hour; it being just a feel-good, yuppie, one-hour of caring, 8765.8127 hours to not give a damn.
And yes, I too would rather have Earth Day, Earth Week, Earth Year… Earth forever! (There might be some hope here).
My sky! Let’s just make that Mother Earth Forever!
It’s pretty easy to get cynical about this kinda stuff, these one-off moments of caring…or you-caring but when you walk around the city and office buildings have their lights on and major advertisement billboards glow like shameful beacons that capitalism is forever.
See, you can hear the cynicism creeping in.
So tomorrow, I’m gonna put my best, good intentions forward and in my mind, I’m gonna imagine an 11-year-old kid who’s just starting to become aware of Mother Earth and environmental justice and I’m gonna picture that kid telling — no announcing! — they want their family to turn off the lights for an hour while explaining what Earth Hour is all about.
Yup, I’m gonna imagine that when all the lights are off in the city, somewhere, out there, there is a kid with this huge beautiful light of awareness shining inside of them.
Because I was that kid. Maybe you were that kid, too?
Everyone has to start somewhere.
