We are at a media conference on water justice at this moment in Copenhagen.

Council of Canadians chairperson Maude Barlow is highlighting that water should be central at this summit, and that climate justice is water justice.

She is noting that, “It is widely acknowledged that climate change is having a profound impact on our fresh water, but it is less understood that our collective abuse and displacement of fresh water is also a serious cause of climate change and global warming.”

She is saying that the large number of climate change refugees – populations displaced due to global warming – expected in the coming years are water refugees.

And now she is raising the threat of water privatization in the Canada-European Union trade agreement currently being negotiated.

Also on the media conference panel – Adriana Marquisio of the Latin American water network Red Vida from Uruguay, and Ricardo Petrella of the World Political Forum from Italy.

More on this soon.
