I have to say I am not very surprised to see the Conservatives using the shooting on Parliament Hill to push their right wing agenda. But, I am a bit surprised by the speed at which they are doing it.
What we, the MPs, staff and visitors of the House of Commons, went through was pretty dramatic. A soldier was killed and then a shootout happened right next to our caucuses doors.
We were literally one door away from the gunman.
My thoughts in the last days have been that our justice system is based on a principle that victims should not be directly involved in the judicial process. Why? For good reason. Because they are too emotionally involved.
In this case, it’s a tricky one. We were the victims of basically what was attempted murder. But, at the same time, we have the power to legislate and change laws. I would think that it is not a bad idea to let the dust settle and have a thorough debate on this before moving forward with laws to reinforce police power.
