MEDIA ADVISORY – Mi’kmaq Warrior Society to hold Press Conference at Provincial Courthouse in Moncton; Warriors enter pleas as 4 remain incarcerated and final bail is heard

WHAT: A PRESS CONFERENCE with Jason ‘Okay’ Augustine, Mi’kmaq Warrior, Land Defender and father; Alison Menard, Lawyer (Lemieux Ménard & Co, LLB); Other speakers TBA

WHY: The conference aims to contextualize the RCMP raid within a framework of treaty violations while providing insights as to who and what the Warrior Society is.

This press conference will present perspectives from Mi’kmaq Warriors and others experts on the events that took place in Rexton on Thurs. Oct 17th, as well as to provide updates on the ongoing court proceedings faced by 6 Mi’kmaq Warriors as a result of the RCMP raid. Of the 6, 1 Warrior has been denied bail and 2 ohers turned down their hearings in solidarity. 2 Warriors have been released on bail and the final Warrior, Jim Pictou, has his bail hearing Friday. 3 Mi’kmaq Warriors and Land Defenders will be submitting their plea to the courts on Friday.

Jason ‘Okay’ Augustine was held in detention for 8 days after a violent RCMP raid on a peaceful anti-shale encampment on Oct. 17th 2013. The blockade prevented SWN exploration equipment from operating and is widely supported by Mi’kmaq, Maliseet, Acadian and Anglo communities.
