Idle No More against the Tar Sands and Line 9 Reversal in Sarnia, ON!
Rally and water ceremony beginning at 11 a.m at Sarnia City Hall (255 Christina St N) March will end at the Best Western Guildwood Inn (1400 Venetian Blvd)
Join us on Tuesday, May 21, for a family friendly rally and march through downtown Sarnia led by community members of Aamjiwnaang First Nation and ASAP (Aamjiwnaang + Sarnia Against Pipelines).
Together we will demonstrate our opposition to Tar Sands development — including the Line 9 pipeline reversal — on the first day of an industry conference to be hosted here in Chemical Valley, called “Bitumen — Adding Value: Canada’s National Opportunity” (May 2122 at Sarnia’s Best Western Inn).
Bringing together representatives from government, big oil, academia and co-opted labour unions, this conference aims to persuade its powerful attendees to invest in further developing the Tar Sands and turning the colonial state of Canada into a “sustainable energy superpower” (as boasted by the conference website, http://canadabitumen.com/ )
We know their only “sustainable” goal is profit and we know what they will continue to sacrifice for this: the health of the land, water, and all life that gets in their way, from Alberta to Ontario and beyond. Facing even greater impact are the Indigenous communities living in close proximity to the Tar Sands, pipelines, and other industry sites.
Aamjiwnaang is already affected by the processing plants currently operating in Chemical Valley, where the “Bitumen — Adding Value” conference will try to make its case for the necessity of increased Tar Sands production. But alternatives to this reliance on Tar Sands energy can and must be found.
This conference is coming to Ontario amidst a rising tide of resistance to Tar Sands projects, particularly the reversal of Enbridge Inc.’s aging Line 9 pipeline. The plan to ship corrosive Tar Sands bitumen through Ontario, from Aamjiwnaang/Sarnia to Hamilton/Westover, will create the risk of catastrophic oil spills identical to the Enbridge pipeline rupture in 2010 which poisoned Michigan’s Kalamazoo River.
We cannot let this happen again here!
