Over 200 shipyard employees in Halifax walked off the job yesterday to protest alleged bullying by their employer.

CBC news reported that the workers at Irving Shipyards decided to protest after the suicide of a suspended worker earlier in the week. The deceased, who has not been named, was suspended after a disagreement over how to build staging. Some of the workers believe the suspension may be connected with the worker’s decision to commit suicide.

Other workers told media today that they believe older workers are being “pushed out.” New management recently took over Irving Shipyards and protesting workers directly connected this move to an increase in workplace bullying.

Unifor represents workers at Irving Shipyards. According to a report from the Halifax Media Co-op, union reps are planning on meeting with management Friday to address the claims of bullying and other worker grievances.

Some workers did return to the job Thursday though many continued to protest. CBC news reported today that talks have been scheduled between Irving Shipyards management and the union.
