Prior to returning to University to complete an honours Sociology degree, Myra Leyden spent 25 years in the workforce as an employment councillor, ESL teacher, fundraiser and new home builder. In 2006, Myra graduated from a pre-apprenticeship carpentry program designed for women interested in the construction industry and was subsequently hired by a new home builder in the capacity of site personnel.

It was while working in the construction industry that Myra began to question the feasibility of women working in a traditional male-dominated sector, which eventually led her back to University. She is currently working on a Masters in Sociology, concentrating on the challenges faced by workers in the residential construction industry as they try to find a balance between the demands of work and their home/family life expectations.
