It's a Wonderful Life (1946)

Dear rabble readers,

Recently, I revisited one of my favourite winter classics, It’s a Wonderful Life and –as is the case with all truly great movies– couldn’t help but find parallels to elements of my own life in the story of George Bailey.

We’re all familiar with the tale: George comes to understand a life well-lived is measured by love for friends and family, the decency we show others, and appreciating the small things. It’s a simple message, but a powerful one, too; and one that brings a tear to my eye without fail each year.

This year, however, I was struck by another message, which comes at the very end of the film.

Once the reality of George’s life is restored, he rushes home to await his arrest.  Instead, the townsfolk of Bedford Falls come flooding into the Bailey home, ready to contribute the little they have to cover the missing money. The generosity of a small group of people is enough to pay George’s debt and turn the tide.

This winter, we need the same kind of support from you, gentle readers.

How can you support rabble today?

It turns out, 67 per cent of those who have signed up to receive our weekly newsletter have never donated to rabble. That’s roughly 9500 people.

  • If 9500 people even gave $1 per month, rabble would have $9500. This would be enough to cover website costs for an entire year.
  • If 9500 gave $2.50 each month, we would be sitting on $23,700. This would help us repay our CEBA loan and keep operations running smoothly in 2024.
  • At our recommended $12 a month, we would nearly reach $114,000. That’s enough funding to support our staff, including the hiring of full-time reporters and a development coordinator to help us with grant writing and fundraising for the new year.

Imagine the possibilities!

We have always been a people-powered organization. Today, we ask everyone who has never donated to rabble before to consider becoming a monthly donor

With your support, we can continue to share news for the rest of us in 2024.

Thank you for your ongoing support!
