Join rabble.ca in our new Eat Local! food and sustainability challenge Sunday September 29 to Sunday October 6!

It’s harvest time and with all the excellent farmers’ markets and abundant local food sources, what better way to celebrate and take part than to incorporate local foods into your menu for a week.

We encourage you to eat local as much as you can during this week-long challenge with our rabble staff and contributors. Add some farm-fresh broccoli and lettuce or maybe some homegrown herbs to your plate. Or maybe even go all out and give up the coffee, purchase some farm-fresh meats and cheeses and try to cut your own asparagus!

We think eating local is a great way to get involved and experience some of your local farms, markets and grocery stores, think about where your food comes from and what you are consuming and to try something new, and not to mention tasty!

rabble staff and contributors will be blogging on our Eat Local! blog about our experiences with integrating and consuming a local diet during the week, sharing our successes, maybe some failures and the great resources we find along the way.

We will have lots of additional content as well, like how to create your own DIY herb garden and exciting new food movements that are cropping up across Canada! Stay tuned to our Eat Local! blog, Eat Local! Facebook group and our Eat Local! babble thread for all the updates.

Can’t make a week commitment to eating local, but still want to be a part of the challenge? No problem, rabble’s got you covered.

Since eating local helps contribute to the larger theme of sustainability –- it cuts down on carbon emissions from food transportation costs, reduces packaging and materials associated with non-local foods and helps support local food producers –- we’re throwing some other tips and suggestions into the mix!

Along with the Eat Local! food challenge, rabble would like to incorporate sustainable actions into the project starting with things like bringing reusable grocery bags to food shops all the way up to leaving your car in the garage and biking to work!

Watch for rabble’s blog post ’10 quick tips to achieve sustainability’ that will aim to provide alternative challenges during the week and ask you for your best sustainability actions.

Our main goal with this project? We want our rabble friends and families to get involved! We encourage you to join us in eating local and becoming more sustainable and share your experience.

How can you share your experience? Lots of ways!

In our moderated babble forum, we have created a babble thread for rabble users to share their experience and extend other tips and suggestions with fellow babblers. If you aren’t a rabble.ca member, signing up is free and easy and will provide you access to our wonderful babble community.

We have created a Facebook group and Facebook event for the Eat Local! food and sustainability challenge that is open for anyone with a Facebook account to join. The Facebook group is a one-stop-shop for all the Eat Local! content provided by both rabble.ca and participants in the challenge. Swing by and join this group to read what others have to say, see the latest eat local content and post your own cool photos and links!

Fan of Twitter and Instagram? rabble will be using the hashtag #eatlocal during our eat local challenge. Tag your tweets and instagram photos with our eat local hashtag #eatlocal to share your experience!

So mark Sunday September 29 to Sunday October 6 on your calendars and come eat local with rabble!
