Whew! it’s been a tough and draining day here at the Haven on Gabriola Island. I learned tons today, not all of which is going to fit into one video blog, so I’m going to try to post two tomorrow because there was one particularly intriguing exercise I wanted to share. Scroll down after the jump for the video blog.
Today we talked about power, marginalization, unconscious and systemic biases and how to try to overcome them. Some of the concepts I found most interesting:
- social power and personal power (leveraging personal power to tackle social power imbalances)
- storytelling and marginalization — all of our stereotyping words are mini-stories. And they hurt.
- tools for tackling built-in biases based on research, social science and brain science
- the power dynamics of in-groups and out-groups
This is my longest video yet — had to go sit on a log and blurt it all out.
A small and wonderful gift I had to share also: just after I’d stopped recording, a tiny orange-and-emerald hummingbird darted over and took a nonchalant bath right next to where I was sitting, in a trickle flowing down from the rocks.
