Last night I attended the world premiere of Occupy Love, a wonderful film by Velcrow Ripper that poetically shows it’s the combination of love and power that will transform this economic and ecological story into “the greatest love story” in human history. Nowhere in North America have we come closer to Velcrow’s vision than during the Maple Spring in Quebec.
Tonight Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois the spokesperson for the CLASSE, the largest and most radical student group ends a week-long cross Canada tour in Vancouver at W2 Media Cafe, starting at 6:30pm. Lessons from Quebec’s student strike: A forum and celebration is a must. I’ll be there for sure.
For me the Quebec student movement is Occupy 2.0 combining the love and democracy of Occupy with some of the strategic lessons of previous movements. You can hear from Gabriel how they managed to mobilize thousands night after night and hundreds of thousands month after month, inspiring ordinary Quebecois around the province to pour out of their houses nightly banging on pots and pans in solidarity, winning all their demands and then some.
CLASSE is taking time to tour Canada and propose a Quebec/Canada alliance to take on Stephen Harper. This is the first time that a major social organization in Quebec has taken such a major step to build solidarity between English Canada and Quebec. It’s this kind of cross-national alliance of First Nations, Quebec and the rest of Canada that will create an unstoppable force not only to defeat Stephen Harper but also his neo-liberal agenda.
I can hardly wait for what comes next.
