Michael Morones is an eleven year old child from Raleigh, North Carolina who on Thursday January 23, 2014, attempted to hang himself in his bedroom.
The cause for his intense emotional distress was that he was being severely bullied at school for admitting that he enjoyed the television show, My Little Pony. He was being teased for liking, “a girl’s show” and accused of being gay by fellow classmates.
Morones has Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and struggled to endure the daily bullying which led him to attempt suicide.
His parents have told the media they would not have cared if their son was gay or straight as long as he was safe and happy. But he was neither safe nor happy at school. I can only imagine the horror and finding your own child hanging in his bedroom and having to cut him down.
He is currently fighting for his life after he was discovered and rushed to the hospital. His suicide attempt had deprived his brain of necessary oxygen and he has sustained a traumatic brain injury.
His family has been keeping vigil at his hospital bed and doctors have told the family the healing process will be long and hard if he lives.
If he does survive the suicide attempt, as Morones heals, his family can get a better handle on future medical needs.
According to his family, “Michael is a huge lover of all music. He started to learn Violin because of Lindsey Stirling and harmonica because of my career as a musician years ago. The more people that can share this the better. We want this beyond viral for two reasons, one to share the anti bullying message and two to share Michael’s amazing faith in God and I know if Michael was awake right now he would want to give nothing but forgiveness and love to the bully’s who teased him so they would know what it’s like to be accepted without harsh words or violence.”
The Morones family has set up a Go Fund Me account that has surpassed its fundraising goal and is filled with messages of hope for the whole family to heal.
According to reports by his father, the bullying has not stopped as people comment in the hundreds over the Internet as late as Sunday February 2, 2014. This said, most comments on the Go Fund Me site and in media articles are supportive of Michael and his family.
For example, Brett Lucey wrote, “Words cannot express the sadness I feel right now that you (and many other young people) have felt taking your life was your only escape from pain at the hands of bullies.”
Nick McAllister wrote, “You can enjoy whatever shows you want, buddy. I remember being picked on for things I liked, such as shows that were deemed childish, or even cheering a WWE wrestler no one liked. It gets hard, I know, and it’s sad we live in a world where others feel the need to be bullies, but you should never fear them. I truly hope you get through this, and you’ll be stronger for it. I’m 31, and I enjoy cartoons, and that’s my choice. You stay strong, pal.”
