If you’re noticing that your younger siblings or a kids’ organizations near you (after-school groups, clubs, etc.) have all the makings of great young activists, consider running this Youth Activism workshop.
It’s a fairly simple model – clearly focused on encouraging kids and not on radical demonstration, for instance – written by Wendy Schaetzel Lesko. The guide is extremely comprehensive, from learning objectives to a material checklist to a detailed minute-by-minute list of activities. The guide is a great way to encourage young people to stand up for themselves, challenge injustices they see around them, and to always focus on asking questions.
The program includes:
-introductions
-assessment (initial stages)
-challenging stereotypes about young people and impact
-sharing local stories (great place to highlight community organizations or activists)
-multimedia materials
-creating a gameplan
-sharing and final evaluation
