Right now a Canadian woman is facing deportation to the United States and up to 33 years in prison for supporting her children against their abusive father. Over the last 10 years, services to women facing violence in Canada have been gutted. The Harper government refused to investigate systematic violence against women, closed Status of Women offices and cut funding for over 41 women’s organizations. It also cancelled funding for legal challenges to enforce the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Organizations working with women need our support. Here is a great list compiled by Act to End Violence Against Women. Support your local organizations and demand that funding cuts be reversed.
