On Monday June 12th, the Canadian Health Coaliton and Ontario Health Coalition released a through report detailing the extra fees patients are paying for medical care at private facilities. The research was thorough. Researchers at the Ontario Health Coalition surveyed a sample of 136 private clinics in 9 provinces and found 88 clinics in six provinces that are charging patients extra user-fees and selling medically necessary services. They also assessed patient experiences. These extra user fees are unlawful under the Canada Health Act, which forbids extra-billing of patients and requires that all Canadians receive medical care based on need. The results of the surveys are detailed in a new report “Private Clinics and the Threat to Public Medicare”.
Read the report and contact your government to take action to safeguard single-tier public health care for all Canadians.
