The recent anti-abortion laws passed in the United States took years of organizing to achieve and, let’s make no mistake about it, there is a growing Canadian movement which supports similar laws.
Recently the CBC and 660 News posted informative pieces about how the anti-abortion movement is reinventing itself, recruiting young people and morphing into a bigger and bigger political force. Despite the fact that according to polls, most Canadians are pretty happy with the status quo regarding choice in Canada, according to these articles, there exists a well-organized, politically-savvy movement rebranding whole abortion conversation. They are also very actively trying to elect “pro-life candidates” at every level, from the school boards all the way up to MPs.
The Canadian anti-abortion movement has made great inroads, as we’ve seen in Ontario and Alberta, where they were very active in electing both province’s new premiers. Now, Andrew Scheer is telling anti-abortion activists that he will let Conservative MPs reopen the debate.
Unless we start making a noise about the fact that we support choice, they will have more wins. Here are a few quick actions to take:
- Recently Canadian distributors Cineplex and Landmark refused to show anti-choice released the film Unplanned. They will be getting a lot of messages criticising them because this story is now becoming a cause célèbre for the anti-choice movement. Send a message supporting them.
- Sam Oosterhoff is not the only Conservative courting the anti-choice vote. In Ontario, Oosterhoff, Niagara West, Christina Mitas, MPP for Scarborough Centre, and Will Bouma, MPP for Brantford-Brant, all spoke at an anti-choice rally. Send them a message condemning their stance and organize against them. Campaign Life ranks politicians and political candidates based upon their “anti-choice-ness.” We can use these rankings to make sure that we oppose all green and yellow light candidates.
- Demand that the charitable status of anti-choice groups be revoked. They are political and should be labelled as such.
