This week, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government announced the approval of a $36-billion liquefied natural gas development that threatens the BC coast.  The Federal Environment Minister Catherine McKenna also announced that the Liberal government would be sticking to the Harper government’s 30 percent target for reducing carbon emissions and Ontario Minister Liz Sandals said that the protesters standing against Nestle’s water taking permit are misinformed.

The LNG Project: Ricochet Media produced a great article which talks about why First Nations and allies are opposing the LNG project citing environmental concerns, natural habitat destruction, and Petronas’, the company that won the contract, jaw droppingly bad safety record.  There is currently a gofundme page to build a fund for the campaign to save Lelu Island and Flora Banks.  The page has raised $20,000 but their target is $100,000.  Please support the fund and the camp.  Learn more at on the Facebook page.

Nestle:  There was a drought in Aberfoyle, ON last summer, but Nestle continues to pump water from the drought stricken area for $3.71 per one million litres.  The province is currently reviewing renewing the contract with Nestle.  Right now, Nestle is can taking up to 3.6 million litres a day from the Aberfoyle well, and recently it outbid the community of Centre Wellington for another nearby well it wants for future business.  The township wanted for its drinking water supply.  After the Centre Wellington ruling, Maud Barlow of the Council of Canadians went to Guelph to launch a campaign to boycott Nestle and people are posting these stickers on bottled water.  

Climate change:  According to Desmog Canada and Clean Energy Canada the most important thing is not setting the target, it is meeting the target.  We must work now push provinces, communities, and our federal government to act to impact climate change.  The consultations at all levels continue, LEAP manifesto continues to try to bring people together to impact climate change and other issues, and so many other groups are working on building plans and making us more ambitious.  Tell us about intiatives and let’s push this target further.
