The social media campaigns that have exposed sexual harrassment in recent months have been extraordinary. However, my ability to participate was based upon my privilege–my relative job security, my access to internet, the fact that I live in a society where exposing my harrasser will not mean I may go to jail. How can I do the more difficult work of supporting deeper engagement and not leaving anyone behind.
UN Women does the work of reaching out to women around the world, from different levels of privilege. Right now, they are in the midst of their 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign, a global campaign spanning from 25 November through 10 December, 2017. This years theme is “Leave No One Behind – End Violence against Women”, for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (25 November) and UNiTE Campaign’s observance of the 16 Days of Activism to End Violence against Women (25 November – 10 December). They have developed Facebook frames, Twitter Twibbons and other social media tools but more importantly they have also developed tools to help us act offline, to help activists to reach those who are most vulnerable. Find out how you can take action.
