Indigenous Environmental Networks’ Red Road Cancuns call out:

“We call on Indigenous peoples, communities and supporters in the U.S. and Canada to mobilize on December 7, 2010 to reject false market-based distractions and to instead adopt real people-centered solutions to climate change. We are calling for actions in at least 20 cities across the US to be part of the thousands of Cancuns actions that will happen the same day across the globe.

Once again, Indigenous Peoples are demanding that the real solutions to the climate crisis, comes from the grassroots at the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP 16) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) that will take place in Cancun from November 29 to December 10, 2010.

The Indigenous Environmental Network has put in place the RedRoadCancun.com blog where all actions, statements, press releases, video, live audio, and live daily updates from Cancun can be shared and used to further advance our grassroots movement. Watch live video broadcasts daily at 12pm – 1pm CST!

Our actions in Cancun are united by 4 common demands:

–We call upon the United States and Canada to support language in the UN climate negotiating text that ensures that the rights of Indigenous Peoples in all countries are respected, upheld and recognized in all final texts and agreements, consistent with the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and other international human rights norms and standards.

–We call on the United States and Canada to drop the ineffective Copenhagen “Accord” and embrace the Cochabamba People’s Agreement and to support language that recognizes the Rights of Mother Earth.

–We reject REDD+, offsets, carbon markets and other false solutions to climate change that commodify forests, land, life, and water.

–We affirm that people on the frontlines are changing the system and cooling the planet one community and region at a time, and we uplift these grassroots solutions as real and viable solutions to the global climate crisis.”

Through a horizontal people’s process, the Assembly will seek to create a space where we can work together to share experience, knowledge, and resources in order to build a local response to a global crisis. The Assembly hopes to work towards this objective through channels of collective dialogue and community empowerment.

Our goal is to generate new possibilities and new hopes in order to bridge the gap from separately operating groups, communities, and individuals, to converge into one diverse, united movement. We must equip ourselves with the tools we need to fulfill our potential as an effective Social and Climate Justice community.a thousand Cancuns to counter the next round of negotiations in Mexico from Nov. 29th to Dec. 11th.

For Dec. 4th, the Global Climate Campaign has initiated an international day of action, and the national call-out by the Council of Canadians to hold countrywide assemblies on the same day has been answered by communities across Canada. The second Assembly, as a manifestation of these calls to resistance, will serve as the launching point for a series of regular Assemblies in an effort to build a united movement for Climate Justice in Toronto.

***Please bring pots and pans for making noise and please dress up creatively to help rock the party!***

In opposition to the False Solutions promoted through the Copenhagen Accord, La Via Campesina, a global movement of peasant farmers, has called for 1,000 Cancuns, an international day of solidarity actions on December 7th in support of the social movements in the global south who are converging on Cancun to fight for climate and environmental justice.

Fighting for climate and environmental justice means standing together to say we will not allow indigenous people to be forced off their land through carbon market forest deals, we will not allow the lives and health of poor people to be endangered while social programs are slashed, we will not let farmers have their crops threatened by unpredictable weather patterns and corporate control, will not allow forced migration of the inhabitants of small island and low-lying nations as their homelands drown under rising seas, we will not let our most valuable resources, be it clean water or sacred homelands go up for sale, and we will not let those in power to silence our fight for the justice for people and the planet, we call upon our allies to join us as we march on the financial district to MAKE SOME NOISE and remind them just who owns the streets in Toronto.

Tired of false solutions and undemocratic policy from government and industry?
