The second annual Animals Beyond Borders fundraiser takes place on Saturday, November 3, from 6 – 9:30 p.m. at Bloor Street United Church, 300 Bloor St. W.
Organizers expect a packed house, with featured speakers including Phil Demers, ex head trainer of Marineland and lead whistleblower, and Jo-Anne McArthur of www.WeAnimals.org, internationally acclaimed animal photographer who has worked for Jane Goodall and who is featured in the upcoming film by Canadian film maker Liz Marshall The Ghosts In Our Machine.
“This annual event aims to reach Beyond Borders and in that I look forward to showing images about the serious issue of bear bile farming and bear rescues in southeast Asia. The slide show will illuminate the vital work of the Animals Asia Foundation and how we can support them, and the bears, from afar,” says Jo-Anne McArthur.
“Come learn the truth about Marineland. Even as the strong threat of lawsuits loom, I remain determined to get justice for the animals I cared for during my 12 year tenure. Ontario has allowed John Holer to operate for 51 years void of any animal right laws or standards of care for the animals in his possession. He has, and continues to take full advantage of this void, and it’s time Ontarians step up to fix our mess. Please join my efforts to advocate for the necessary changes to help the suffering animals of Marineland and Ontario,” says Phil Demers.
The evening will also feature a video by rabble’s own Anita Kranjc and Humberto DaSilva. For a sneak peek of their documentary Pig Save: Bearing Witness, see below.
Toronto Pig Save activists bear witness each week of the pigs in transport trucks and in the slaughterhouse at Quality Meat Packers in downtown Toronto. The regular Toronto vigils are part of a growing Pig Save movement including weekly vigils in Burlington organized by Hamilton/Burlington Pig Save and the rise of Melbourne Pig Save and their regular protests to highlight their ban sow stalls campaign. Photographer Jo-Anne McArthur of WeAnimals.org goes on a road trip to visit the recently rescued Julia and her piglets at Farm Sanctuary in Watkins Glen in upstate New York.
Proceeds from the fundraiser go to five groups: Animals Asia Foundation, Marineland Animal Defence, Toronto Aquarium Resistance, Toronto Pig Save, and Hamilton Burlington Pig Save.
